Re: John Evans

Not about an Atfield but about a John Evans in Abingdon, Bks. England. Sorry, but I lost track of your original message about John Evans. In a draft I did type the following:

I think yours is a different John Evans because: my trusty 3rd cousin in England thinks Mary died in 1842 - source BMD volume 6 page 76 - not 1803 when 'your' Mary might have died. 'My' Mary was in the
1841 Census but did not appear in later censuses. We don't have proof of this death record's being the right one.

There's another John Evans who was a fairly prominent Baptist pastor -

‘News of a Country Town’ p.134 :’Rev John Evans age 58 died July 3 1813 in Abingdon. He was ‘more than thirty years the faithful and laborious pastor of a congregation of protestant dissenters in that place.’
Is this the John Evans you are looking for? I guess he could have been a weaver and hempdresser as well. Pastors were very poor.
'My' Mary's brother was in that industry but it was a huge industry at that time in that area. This fact doesn't necessarily make a connection with my ancestors.

'My' John Evans and Mary Argyle:married 1799 24 Feb. N. Berkshire Marriage Index 1538-183.
The Baptist church was big for my Argyle ancestors. Offspring of Mary and John were baptized there along
with numerous other of my ancestors.

children of 'my' Mary Argyle and John Evans:

Joseph died April 1828 as per the journal of his first cousin Joseph. He was buried at the Baptist church's Lower Meeting House.

William Argyle born c. 1818 died 1895 Edward St Abingdon - source: my cousin Keith Argyle

Maria b. 19 Sep 1807 IGI; baptized 15 Jan 1837 Lower Meeting House Abingdon - Baptist records

Phebe 22 Dec 1804; IGI & Keith; baptized 28 Mar 1830 Lower Meeting House; IGI

This is what I have, Bruce. Does it help at all?

I came across your posting by chance today, while looking up war memorial data. My surname is Evans, but before marriage my Mother was Frances-Elsley Atfield of Brook, Albury, Surrey, UK. I too go back the Charles who was deported in 1935, and have the honour of having his Mother Mary's wedding ring, which I am proud to wear. My Mother was, like myself, an only child and the brothers of her Father (Albert), Alfred and Arther died in WWI, so I do not really know any one else now - but do make sure there is a cross for each of them in the London fields of remembrance every November and I hope to go down for the opening of the fields in 2012. However, I have in previous years walked among the many Atfield graves in Albury churchyard, where my Grandparents are also interred.I moved to Bradford W Yorkshire in 1983, so trips to Surrey have reduced over the years.
Elizabeth (Francces-Elizabeth Evans)

For any Attfields or Atfields out there who are interested, please consider joining the "Attfield DNA Group" on Ancestry and - if possible - also taking a DNA test.

Some of us Attfields who did not know if we were related or not have taken DNA tests, and the results are very valuable and interesting.

If more Attfields/Atfields from different lines compare their DNA, we will get a much more complete picture of our origins. Please consider taking part!

Thank you,
John Attfield

I note your other info on the website. I can liley fill many gaps. James and Ann were indeed the corrrect line with James coming from "Bookham" though I cannot find which and any ancestors before that.
Do you know where Moses came from? I am aware of Moses, born Albury in Surrey, UK about 1824. He appeared in the 1841 census aged 15, but can't find any record of him after that. His father's name was Henry.

Could we be talking about the same person?

Perhaps we are related,
Atfields were good breaders. I am desperate to find
a link between my /our Charles born 1810 in the U.K.
and his parents. I have thousands of U.K. Atfields
(various spellings) back to about 1066 a.d., plus a
coat of arms (3) Hope to hear from you soon
kindest regards...Gary

First - I am certain that my Henry's father was James. I have Henry's marriage certificate and his father's name is given as James.
Next, I recently came across someone on another website interested in the family, who gave me the name Ann Harris, and a number of Henry's siblings - James included. A lot of other information she gave me was consistent with data I had already collected - particularly baptism and burial records from Albury parish. I got these from the Surrey History Centre in Woking - but a lot of them are now published on http://www.alburychurches.org/history/christeningsa.html (you have to look for both Atfield and Adfield)

Unfortunately, the baptism records on the website do not include the names of parents, but those at Woking do. At the time, I did not go back far enough to pick up Henry or James baptism record - so cannot confirm that their parents are listed as James and Ann in each case. But all the other data I was given by the lady on the other website tallies more or less exactly. So I am very confident that the bit about James and Ann is correct.
What do you think?

We have also found that James and Henry were brothers. But we have found James' parents as John Attfield and Elizabeth Chitty (marriage 1/5/1784 Windlesham). Of course we're not certain on this. What else do you know about Ann Harris and James At/dfield?

Hello, Joanna,

Let me say first of all that this is not a sales pitch! Just want to pass on information only, if it relates to your family. 3 months ago I purchased an indenture for 1902 and a conveyance for 1865 and 1877 relating to a David Atfield, farmer, a William Atfield, butcher and a Susan Atfield, spinster. Susan was in Redhill, Surrey and the former chaps in Pulborough, Sussex. Tonight is the first time I have managed to look at it! If it is your family I can transcribe the information and pass it along to you. The reason I bought the items is because I hate to see history go to waste even if it's not mine. Best wishes.

Henry is as far back as I have traced so far. All I know about his background. is that he was born in Albury around 1795, his father's name was James, and he was married to Mary, I think, before he married Rachel. I can tell you a lot about his descendants if you are interested. Can you fill in any of the gaps?

John, we think there is a connection too. We believe that Rachel Cramp is Elizabeth Cramp's sister. Their parents were Joseph Cramp and Frances (Fanny) Sharp. We believe Henry Atfield is our William Atfield's uncle. James Atfield and Sarah Snelling are William Atfield's parents. Could Henry and James' father be John Attfield? Very interested in your opinion.
Best wishes
Tania and Danny Atfield

Tania, my GGG grandfather was Henry Atfield who was born and lived in Albury and married Rachel Cramp there in 1840. Albury is a tiny place - surely there must be some connection. Possibly two brothers marrying two sisters? Rachel was born in Bexhill in Sussex. I don't know anything about Henry's siblings, but his father was James. Do you know any nore than I do?

Henry Attfield of Chertsey 1722-1793

I'm researching the family tree relating to Henry Attfield of Chertsey, Surrey (1722-1793). Copies of this tree were circulated by Colin Attfield in the 1950s and I am now trying to update and correct it. For example the original tree excluded all females, and this omission needs to be remedied.

The spellings Atfield/Attfield tended to be interchangeable in the 18th century, plus other variants such as Atfeild (or even Feild).

A lot of new information has already been found, but there are still major gaps. It would also be great to be able to extend the tree backwards to earlier generations.

The results so far can be viewed at the following URL:

http://www.familytree.john-attfield.com

If anyone is interested in the particular Attfield tree, and/or has any additional information, please contact me on this Message Board or by e-mail (address is shown on the site). All information will be gratefully acknowledged on the site.

Many thanks.

George H. Atfield. . There are some George Atfields listed in Sussex, the next county. Depending on their parents and the age of George there are George aged 18, born in Pulborough ( where most of my relatives come from), a carter on a farm, George Atfield aged 3 months from Surrey, West Clandon, George aged 9 from Egham Surrey and George Atfield 67, from Compton, a carter on a farm. I have traced my line from Philip Adfield(Atfield) and Susan who married in 1821,through Charles, Charles, Friend, James, Bruce (my dad) to me. I have quite a few documents so if you have any other names do drop me an e mail.
Regards Joanna Atfield

I have got back to 1774 so far. Suggest you look in parish registers for Farnham/Shere etc for a James, if you can. My gtX5 grandfather, Francis, b 1792 farnham, had an older brother James and I think he had at least 3 nephews called James too
Roger
atfield ancestors in australia

I have found my ancestors going back to George Meshach Atfield b. 1852 at Ealing England. He came to Keppel Bay(central Queensland) on the"Alexandrina" landing there in Dec. 1873. His family stayed around Mount Morgan up til about the 1960's. He married Martha Jane Limpus in Jan. 1874. She came on the same ship with her father and siblings (apparently the mother died in England before they came out here).
I also found evidence of a Meshach (b. c1822) and Shadrach (b. c1820's) Atfield both born around Ealing as well. Can anyone help with any more info on these or any others?
