Deborah -

I am Martin's youngest daughter, Cheryl. You are correct, my sister Teri did visit Rock Rapids in the 70s with my dad.

Dad passed away September 12, 1990 at the age of 66 from a brain tumor.

I forwarded your message to my brother Joe (Frederick Joseph Asche SR), you will probably be hearing from him soon.

It is all very interesting to learn about family members. We first met Frank & Jenny in the late 60s. I don't even know most of their children's names. I remember Doug & Elaine and their children, and they came to visit us in Florida the next year or so after we were in Iowa. And when we were there, I remember meeting a daughter-in-law Sharon, who was pregnant, but those are the only names I remember.

We also met and stayed with cousins, Cliff & Louann. Their daughter was Ginger, can't remember the son's name. Can you tell me anything about them? I couldn't remember their last name either. I think Louann was the Asche, but don't know who she belonged to.

This thread is the first I've ever heard of our grandma being Polish and not German!

Re: Asche; IA

My grandfather was Weert Asche who was born in October 1914 & was killed in a car crash in 1940; he had a brother named Martin & a sister named Selma (who lived in Rock Rapids, IA) & another sister named Jenny (who also lived in Rock Rapids, IA). Weert's & Martin's father was, indeed, named Ludwig -- I saw Ludwig's headstone.

Weert married Leona Rasmussen & they had 3 children: Martha Idyll Asche Van Antwerp (b. 2/1937), John Alfred Asche (b. 9/1939), & Norma Ann Asche Craft (b. 9/28/1940, shortly after Weert was killed in a car crash). Norma is my mother.

She married my father, Ross Cecil Craft, in 1958; they had 4 children: Ralph Allen Craft (b. 2/11/1959), Deborah Lynn Craft-Marks (b. 4/17/1960, Deborah is writing this), Ronald Joseph Craft (b. 1/9/1962), Rosalie Ann Craft-Andersen (b. 11/25/1963). Ross, nicknamed "Butch," died of a heart attack in 1994.

Leona Asche married again, to Glen Sheets. Leona died 12/1/2008, & is buried next to Weert in Custer, SD.

Is your father, Martin, deceased? We saw quite a lot of him in the mid-1970s. In fact, my family went with him to visit Selma & Jenny in Rock Rapids; I believe that is where I saw Ludwig's headstone. One of Martin's daughters would occasionally visit us, but right now I'm blanking on her name -- could it be Terri?

Can you please help me out? I'd love to know more about the Asches.

Thanks,
Deborah Craft-Marks

Judy,

I found this older post searching message boards on rootsweb. It turned up when I searched "Eilers" for surnames and "Oldenburg" for keywords. I am interested in any info I can find on my g-g grandmother, Helene Eilers. She was born near Westerstede, which was once part of Oldenburg. More info:

Born 1824
Married 1844 to Gerd Gerdes
Died 1855, near Westerstede

You listed Eilers and have lots of Oldenburg connections. Does she fit in any of your trees?

Any further info. you have would be much appreciated. This particular GGM(Wilhelmine) is the only one of that generation of whom I have no real clue. She was very young when she married my GGF, Georg Kuhnhenn in Madison, WI (only a muddy- streeted villiage in 1853). I have also heard the name 'Niedermeier' mentioned as somehow connected. She was, no doubt, part of the great German influx of that era, I have reason to believe she may not have been very fluent in English--one of the census reports records her maiden name as "Asha", a phonetically pretty correct version but no where near the German spelling, as if an English-speaking census taker merely recorded what was heard but had got no spelled-out version. (It's likely Wilhelmine would have been at least minimally literate in her native tongue as literacy levels in Germany were very high at that time.) Whatever, I'm going to do some more looking, I'd appreciate any info. you might have. Al F.
Just thought I'd share the following to see if it matches up with anything you have about Wilhimene Asche's 8 (or 9) kids.....

My great-great grandfather was August Asche, born sometime before 1860 and probably in some part of what is now Germany. We think he immigrated here as a young man although I have yet to find his name listed on any passenger manifests for the period. We know that he lived for a time in Cincinnati, Ohio, because that is where one of his children--my great grandfather, Heinrich (Harry) Frederick Asche was born in 1880. Because your g.g.gm would have been 20-25 at the time of August Asche's estimated D.O.B. I wonder whether his name shows up on your list of her children?

It is possible there is some connection, but it's hard to say. My great-great grandmother's birthplace was merely listed as"Prussia", a shifting political entity in the 19th Century prior to unification of the country. But she did marry Georg Kuhnhenn who had emigrated from Muenden, which was sometimes part of Prussia, as I understand it, so she might have some ties to that area in what is now Lower Saxony. I would really like to know more of her; she died relatively young, , in spite of some efforts to discover more about her--the records at that time being so poor--I've had no luck. I'll keep looking if more is found will keep you in the picture. Good luck in your search. Al F.

Asche Family of Rock Rapids, IA

This is the most recent information I have about the Asche family which I received from my fathers half sister.
My grandfather is Martin Asche (no middle name). He was born in Rock Rapids, IA on June 13 1924. His mothers name was Elsa, that's all the information I have about grandpas parents. Martin was the youngest having 6 sisters and brothers. His oldest brother was Arthur, who was married to Mary Jayne and lived in Pittsburgh,PA. Two other brothers were Fred and (in the spelling it came to me) Wiert. A sister Selma who married Ben Brommer. Another sister Jenny who was married to Frank Steenblock and had 9 children.
And one more brother Lou who lived in Bentonville, AR with his wife Helen. They had no children of their own. There was a baby girl born, possiably after Martin that didn't live very long. She would have been the 8th child.
I hope this is a help to anyone looking for us Asches'. I would be interested in hearing from you also.
Thanks Tina
Weert and tabb and families use to come to Iowa to visit and then I went to Il. along with my parents and my husband and son . We visited with the relatives, this was in 1948 or 1949. Do you live in german valley/ Do you know Tabb's son Lawrence Asche? He knows a lot of family history and he may be able to tell you who that Weert is.I live in Oregon. Send me your e-mail address and I can contact you that way. Ruth

Hello...

My grandfather was named Weert Asche (b. 1914, d. 1940), & he was married to Leona Rasmussen. Weert was killed in a traffic accident in February 1940; Leona died 12/1/2008 at the age of 91. After Weert died, Leona remarried; her second husband was Glen Sheets, who died in 1985.

Weert had a younger brother named Martin, who would occasionally visit us when I was still living with my parents (we lived in Sioux City, Iowa). The last I heard of Martin, he was living in Florida.

The father of Weert & Martin was named Ludwig.

If my Great-uncle Martin is your father, then you & my mother are cousins.

The children of Weert & Leona (Rasmussen) Asche:

Martha (Asche) Van Antwerp
John Asche
Norma Ann (Asche) Craft

Norma is my mother. She was born 9/28/1940, a few months after Weert was killed.

On 6/3/1958, my mother married Ross Cecil Craft (nicknamed "Butch") in Hot Springs, SD. They had 4 children:

Ralph Allen Craft (b. 2/11/1959)
Deborah Lynn Craft-Marks (b. 4/17/1960)
Ronald Joseph Craft (b. 1/9/1962)
Rosalie Ann Craft-Andersen (b. 11/25/1963)

My father died 7/23/1994.

One thing I did find out...in the mid-1970s, my parents, siblings, & I visited one of Weert's sisters in Rock Rapids, Iowa (for the life of me I can't remember her name). She told us that the Asche family was 100% German, but that her mother (also the mother of Weert & Martin) was 100% Polish.

I realize this post I'm responding to is rather old, but I thought I would pass what info I had to you. If you have any other info please let me know.

Deborah Lynn Craft-Marks

My grandfather was Weert Asche, & my grandmother was Leona Rasmussen Asche Sheets, born 9/29/1917 (she married Glen Sheets in 1941, I believe). Glen Sheets died in 1985; Leona Sheets died on 12/1/2008 at the age of 91.

I have an uncle named John Asche & an aunt named Martha Asche Van Antwerp. My mother's name is Norma Ann Asche Craft, & she was born in Custer, SD, on 9/28/1940. She married my father, Ross Cecil Craft, in Hot Springs, SD on 6/3/1958. Ross (nicknamed "Butch") was born 2/23/1938 and died 7/23/1994.

Weert Asche was nicknamed "Slim," and he had a brother named Martin Asche, who would be my great-uncle; I have, however, lost track of him. The last I heard, Martin Asche was living in Florida.

Martha Asche Van Antwerp has 2 children, John Asche has 4 children.

Norma Asche Craft has 4 children: Ralph Allen Craft, b. 2/11/1959; Deborah Lynn Craft-Marks, b. 4/17/1960; Ronald Joseph Craft, b. 1/9/1962; Rosalie Ann Craft-Andersen, b. 11/25/1963.

One final note: I think Ludwig Asche was the name of Weert's father. I don't know the name of Ludwig's wife, but I do know she was Polish, not German like Ludwig.

I hope this info helps.

My Great Grandfather was Dirk Weert Driefholt, born 8 Jan 1855 in Petkum, Germany. He immigrated with family to America in 1882. His father was Weert Schweer Driefholt. Driefholt name is quite uncommon. Will soon become extinct in America as last male Driefholt has no sons. Seems to also be uncommon in Germany. There are Drijfholts in the Netherlands who are probably related way back.
Let me know where & when Hilke Weerts Driefholt was born & if she might be related to my line.
-Jerry Terry

My great-grandfather is Walter Ascher, born in Silvercreek, Stephenson County, Illinois.
My grandmother (93 years old) is an Ascher. She told me that the Aschers were originally the Asche family. There are still many Aschers in the Stephenson County area of Illinois.
From doing research on Ancestry, I was able to confirm that the Asches and the Aschers are the same- when the name changed, I am not sure. I would suggest you try looking up information on Ascher(my great, great grandfather is Simon)-I believe that Hilke is in the lineage somewhere, that name is familiar to me.
The Asches/Aschers immigrated to IL from Germany in 1846. I have been able to trace info. back to the 1760's in Germany thus far.
For further research, Silvercreek is an unincorporated area in Stephenson County IL. I would suggest you look into Freeport IL, where many Aschers were and still are.
Good Luck- If this pans out, we are very distantly related!

Jenny Asche Steenblock is my grandma. She is now dead, but she told me one time about her brother Fred Asche who was in the army and was killed in action. Last year I did some searching and found a site called American Battle Monuments Commissions and entered in the state name of Iowa and Asche and his name came up Fred Asche was a Corporal service #6935103 in the 3rd Reconnaissance Troop, 3rd Infantry Divison and died on 9-20-1944 in Southern France. Fred is +buried at: plot A row 21 grave 65 in Epinal, France in the Epinal American Cemetery. My grandma's mother was named Elsa and here father was name Ludwig. I did meet Martin one time at my grandma's house.
