looking for father/mother of John P(Preston?) Asbell

John P Asbell was born in Tennessee in 1807. Married Jane Phillips in Tishomingo Mississippi in 1837, and long outlived her. Spent considerable years living in Lawrence Tennessee. A previous family researcher said his middle name is 'Preston' but source is unknown and I have been unable to independently confirm. I am at a dead end on who John's father and mother are unless somebody can tell me a likely candidate with a son named 'John/John P/John Preston. (Maybe 'Preston' was the mom's maiden name?)

I do not really know about William Self and Katherine Asbell. I can guess Oklahoma or Arkansas.

The daughter, Annie Lou, married (first time) in Oklahoma, I think. The only thing I know for sure is that she was living in Upton County Texas in 1940 when her last name was Lewis.
She died in 1947 in either Upton County or Ector County, Texas.
She and/or her first husband Benjamin Carter had strong Native American ties...Cherokee and Creek.

I am not the person that you are replying to but I have been following this posting for many years and would like to know as well. Because there are so many Asbells and Asbills, then adding the same name it is hard to keep them straight. Any information on the Asbells and the source would be a welcome to the board.

Sincerely,

Lila Wetzbarger

Donnie, unfortunately it is as illusive as the Nar-nee proof. I have not seen any marriage certificates for either although I have been looking for years for both sources. All we have to rely on is family history at this point. I would hope others out there might be of some help. William Asbell's marriage record to Alan Van Winkle, however, is a matter of record. The DNA record speaks for itself.

I am earnestly trying to find the truth if it is out there.

Jim

Donny,

I am Lydia Asbell's great grandson. In reading your post and information received from Delmar Asbell (most of his information is correct), I respectfully disagree with his contention that Lydia is the daughter of an Indian lady named Nar-nee. There is no creditable documentation for this that I am aware of. I am of the belief that Lydia is the daughter of Elizabeth Moore who William married in about 1789. Lydia wasn't born until 1804. William, I believe, was first married to a Cherokee Indian who apparently died sometime before his second marriage. Willian also later married another Indian lady by the name of Alah Van Winkle in 1810 after Elizabeth died in 1808. If Nar-nee actually survived and went west on the Inidan removal, it would have made sense that William might go with her if necessary. Instead he had two more families. There may, in fact, have been someone named Nar-nee that went to Oklahoma but I would say this is an unrelated person.

I have taken a DNA test for Indian traits from DNA Tribes which I am willing to share with you. It shows no Indian and no Cherokee connections. Bear in mind this is my great grandmother we are talking about here. My grandparents and aunts would certainly have talked about the fact that they were one-fourth Indian if that had been the case. My father would have been rather proud of it.

Good luck on your research. I would be happy to hear from you if you have any information to share.

Jim Bennett
Birmingham, AL

I am sorry to hear of your bereavement in the death of Charity. We are sorry for your lonely condition but you have no near relation living. My mother has been dead six years, died the 20th of January, 1869. She was 74 years old and Betsy Reeder has been dead 5 years. Uncle Joseph is dead. He has been dead 3 years and Uncle William 2 years the sixth day of April last. Aunt Mary is still living and she is very peart considering her age. She is still living in her old home with her youngest child.

Well. Aunt, you said you would tell all about the folks when you got an answer to your letter and I want you to tell me who your children all married and how many children all have and tell me how far you live from where you did when we left Missouri. Tell us whether you are a member of the church or not and if so what church you belong to. I want you to tell us how times are in your country and how crops are. Tell us where Uncle Ross's children live and whether you ever expect to visit Kentucky again or not. I would like to see you very much for it has been 36 years since I saw you and you are the only one of my mother's generation that has not gone to the Spirit Land. You are getting old and will soon follow them. I hope that you may meet them all in a world of happiness when you
will part no more forever. I am getting old too. The 8th day of next November, I will be 57 years old. We have lived to raise a family of 10 children and they are all members of the Church of Christ and are all married and we have given them all farms, horses and cows and beads and other necessities for house keeping. They live all about around us in the suberbs of the Big Hill. We have 24 living grandchildren.

Times are pretty hard here. Corn is high and bacon is high and there has been so much rain for the last two months that small grain is badly injured. We have no grasshoppers but we have some potato bugs.

Well, I recon that by the time you get this much read that you will be tired so I beg you excuse my letter writing. I want you to write to us soon and often. James will write to you soon.

Enclosed I will send you a lock of my mother's hair. It is all of her estate that I ever heired. I supose that I have said enough and must come to a close but sending you my best wishes. Give my respects to all endearing friends.

Yours with Respect,
Mahaley Jane Azbill

P.S. Direct your letters to Jackson County, Clover Bottom Post office, Kentucky.
[note: Mahaley Jane (Becknell) Asbell was a daughter of Mary Nancy Asbell and Thomas E. Becknell. Her mother mentioned in the letter, was a sister of Lydia (Asbell) Bennett. Betsy Reeder was a half sister of Mahaley Jane, and the daughter by the first marriage of Mqry Nancy Asbell and Poosey Reeder.

The Charity mentioned in the letter was the daughter of Ezekiel Bennett by his first wife Nancy Tye/Tyre[?] and a step daughter of Lydia. The James mentioned in the letter is James Asbell, husband of Mahaley Jane Azbill. James Asbell was the minister of the Church of Christ at Cave Springs.

James and Mahaley Azbill migrated to Missouri with the Bennetts, Ross Asbell, Thomas Asbell and the James Wood families in 1836. James and Mahaley did not like the cold Missouri winters so they returned to Kentucky in 1839 just after the death of Lydiass husband Ezekiel Bennett.]

(Bennett, Bennett Book, transcript of letter from Mahaley Jane (Becknell) Azbill to her Aunt Lydia (Asbell) Bennett dated 22 July 1875. I do not remember your face but the relation there is between us. Your sister who was my grandma lived to be adorned with silvery locks. She retained her mind and action until that lusting Angel came and bore her soul away. Away to that blessed home where angels and purified spirits dwell, yes that bright and beautiful home that is prepared for all the true followers of our blesses Redeemer. What happy thoughts to know that all true Christians will met around that glorious altar of the Lord where all of our ways are pleasantness and all of our paths are peace. I hope to meet my old grandfather and grandmother around that glorious altar, God being my helper. All true Christians will be there and we shall see and know each other there.

Well, i hope I shall not worry you. It was supposed that Grandma [Nancy (Asbill) Becknell who was the wife of Thomas Becknell] was some 80 years old. I don't know her age or any of their ages since i have no records. I guess my father, James Asbill, will give you the required information. I see from your writing that you are a Methodist. Grandma was a true follower of Christ. She was buried with the Lord in Baptism. She fought a good fight. She kept the Faith, henceforth there is a crown laid up in Heaven for her and she has put it on. Me thinks I see her now sitting by the side of my Christian Grandpa singing praises to the Lamb. I pray that you may see them in Heaven and that you may be able to wear that victorious crown.

I hope that you will bear with my infirmities. I am the oldest daughter of James Asbill and [was] Elizabeth S. Asbill before my marriage. I married a Virginian by the name of Green V. Holland, a Doctor. I have been married twenty-three years the twelfth of his month (August). I have had but three children. The oldest one is dead. The rest of them are married. Both married Robberson brothers, I have one living grandchild, a boy, a beautiful one. My brothers and sisters are all married.

As your letter is to my father, he will give you all the information of the relations required. Times here are very much on equality with other countries now.

Dear Old Aunt, if I never see you again on this earth, I hope to meet you in that beautiful home where noth nor rust or thieves can break through and steal it. These lines leave me and my family moderately well. I pray if this letter ever reaches you that you may be enjoying good health.

Write on receipt.

Respecfully your neice,

Elizabeth S.
Greetings,
I hope you are still on. I am trying to put together the Malinda Ross/Elizabeth Moore information but what I have is so messed up. I am coming from George Wetzbarger to Elizabeth Asbell side. I am confused as who is the mother for of Elizabether Asbell. Is is Malinda Ross or Elizabeth Moore? It looks like from your email in 2004 it is Malinda. Any help would be great appreciated. What I have looks like they each had about 10plus kids.
Sincerely,

Lila

Does anybody have anything on Mahala J Asbill born about 1835 in Kentucky and died in Texas around 1880? She married Benjamin Ezekiel Barnes around 11-4-1852 in Missouri. I am searching for her birth mothers name.It could be Patsy. Patsy possibly married Ross Asbill in 1825. Patsy was maybe born around 1802 and died in 1849. I dont have a last name of Patsy.

Ross Asbill may be half Cherokee.

Very confused on who Mahala's parents are and grandparents.

Thank you

msgofstr@aol.com

Dear David and Donna
I would like to know if you have found any more information (since 2005) about Solomon Asbill from Randolph County, N.C. I am working on a family history for Christmas for the husband of my granddaughter. Earl Asbill lives in Port Orange, Florida, as does his father. Earl says there is a tradition in his family that the Asbills have Cherokee Indian ancestry, but I have found little information about this. Any help you can provide will be MUCH appreciated. Thank you so much.
Billie Capell Montgomery, Alabama

Ken,
Yes, there is no relevancy between your Stewart y-DNA results and those for any of the Asbill/Asbell Group. There are a couple of females in your direct line of descent. We would need a direct male line descendant of Ivan or any of his brothers, uncles, cousins, etc to be tested.

Thanks for the response, anyway.

Bill

Here are the few pictures I have on file that I can find right now. If I remember right, only one of the Thomas Jefferson was a match. You can tell by the dates. Not sure about that for sure though. Getting kids in school this week, but will look more next week. Contact me if you don't hear anything. You should be able to get to my family tree. There are other pictures there and they are put into context. If you can't, let me know.

Hello Doris,

I found these two items while browsing around in Ancestry searching for the name Fred Asbell. I have a couple of paternal grandmother line relatives of this name although not of African American descent.

You might consider joining Ancestry for the full membership status for a short time and make a focused search for your folks - returning from time to time if the cost of full time membership is not possible. There really is a lot of good info being brought onboard by Ancestry on a continual basis.

Hopefully at least some of this info will be of interest to you. Good luck in your searching.

Search > Birth, Marriage & Death > North Carolina Death Certificates, 1909-1975 > Harnett > 1969 > December

This is the image of your grandfather's death certificate. It shows that his father was William Asbell and his mother was Jane Johnson.

Search > Birth, Marriage & Death > North Carolina Marriage Collection, 1741-2004 > Wayne

This is an image of an NC marriage index listing that includes your grandparents marriage record.

I could send the images directly to you if I had your e-mail address.

Best regards,
Bill Harvey

Hello Ken,

I took the liberty of looking at your ancestry as given by you in both Rootsweb WorldConnect and Ancestry "Search" databases and was able to confirm part of what you have lisred below.

Of note : In the Ancestry 1860 census William is listed with the surname Asbill so you need to be aware that all deviations of your Asbell surname need to be viewed carefully when searching.

I also found where several other researchers have connected your William Asbell b. 1817, GA back to Martin Asbell who came to VA ~ 1700.

It is interesting to note that of 20 participants in a Y-DNA surname test group we have found eight separate Asbill/Asbell/etc lines that do not appear to be closely related at all - only one of these lines appears to have a nearly verified connection back to Martin Asbell.

It appears the documentation of many of our Asbill/Asbell genealogies has been contrived by well-meaning researchers to fit the book published by George Bennett in the 1950/1960 era - which said book has been proved many times over to have false connections which in turn has been a severe disservice to our genealogy community. My own Asbell line is a prime example of this having occurred!

There is a Y-DNA connected Asbell line with two participants that has a history of having Georgia origins. Your line may or may not be connected to them.

If you are interested in discussing this further you can contact me through clicking on my name in this message heading which should show you my e-mail address.

Bill Harvey
Co-administrator of Asbill/Asbell Y-DNA surname Project
a completely voluntary effort with no remuneration or benefits adherent

I am looking for a Lydia Asbell/Asbill who supposedly married Ezekiel Bennett in Madison Co, KY in 1827. She was born about 1804 in North Carolina. Very possible that they are brother and sister.
