His wife's name was Mary, born in 1875, came to USA in 1899 on the Arabia from Hamburg, although they lived in Csecs, Hungary. I'm looking for more info on my family of Orosz, as well.

I was doing the research for a friend, and specifically was interested in the daughter, Helen. Helen married William Stettner . I believe Helen was born ca 1919. I was told that her parents, Mary and ? Avary divorced with Helen was very young --- I didn't know the father's name.

I know so little, and was just trying to help out my friend. Do you think this connects to your line?
Hello!

I believe I am related to the Arvays that you are speaking of. My great-grandfather was George Arvay and he was married first to a Ludmilla (Ludmiller)Buraga and had Alexander Arvay and four other children. Alexander and Maria Mehes had Helen, Alexander, Jr. and Stephen Arvay.

George and Ludmilla either divorced or she died, as George then married Alice Kuklik and had my grandmother, Marie Arvay. Would love to share info.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Donnelly

I believe this headstone belongs to one of my ancestors, Julianna (Savercool) Erway. She was married to Conrad Erway and they had 13 children together. Conrad was a soldier in Sullivan's Army (1779). He moved his family to New York State (near Ithaca) after Julianna died. He remarried (Catharine ?)and they had another son, Henry. Conrad died around 1809 and is buried near Ithaca, NY.

Thank you for posting the photograph of the headstone. I have never seen it, but have researched my lineage and it mentions that she is buried in the Stillwater, NJ cemetery.

I am from SLovakia. My grandmother is from Arvai family, from th neighbourhood of Nitra. I will go this year to the state archives to search for farther information.
But general information, that i can give you is, that name Arva means region of todays Orava-northern Sovakia. Suffix y, or i or j are comming from hungarian language, slovak equivalent is Oravec, also this name may be your family. It is because of complicated relationships and history of Upper Hungarian kingdom, todays Slovakia.
The surnames has been given during 18. and 19.century (After the reign of Maria Teresia) The byrokrats had to use hungarian language and in lots of districts they have overwritten slovak name Oravec to Arvay, then again it was change to Arvaj, or Arvai or Arvayi - all theese version are common in my family tree. It is quiet complicated. If you have any interest writte on xtruh@hotmail.com

could be . my grandmother's oldest brother was an andras. i went to hungary to research some of this a few years ago and the village where my grandmother, esther arvay was born is now vinici in slovakia... all of her siblings emmigrated to the staes but andras.. when i was there i spoke to a widow of one of the decendents still living there but they had no records or photos to speak of. my info comes from the records in kosa spelled wrong the capitol now.. a friend came with me to do the translating. we also tried to check old church records but all were confiscated and sent to the capitol where we saw them. your andras lived not far from where they were born and it would have been very possible that it is the same family... i have some pictures from the first world war with writing on them but was unable to have them translated because the writing is in pencil and illegible... hope this helps

I don't know what county he originally is from. I have started my research not too long ago, and just found out when he was buried (contacted cemetery) I am in the process of sending for his Death Certificate. From my guess, he was born in 1874. My grandmother was from Budapest, but I don't know where he was born.

Juda Arvay - Died Stillwater, NJ 1799

I attached a photo of a beautiful stone to this message. I don't know anything about this woman, but I do love her stone. It reads Juda Arvay- Died Feb. 27, 1799 age 44 years. "God has laid up in heaven for me, a crown which can not fade. The righteous judge at that great day, shall place it on me head". I always visit her stone when I am at the cemetery because I love it so. If anyone knows where she came from, I would love to have documentation for her. This is in Stillwater, New Jersey, USA.

Arvoy - Arvai....which is it?

My surname is Arvoy and as far as I know it has always been. I wonder, does anyone here recognize this name? It seems as though if my grandfather came to the states and his name became Arvai then there may be two names here?

I am looking for Arvoy from Hunary. My grandfather emigrated to the states in 1906 to Port Huron Michigan. His mother was named elisabeth.

Anyone care to take an educated stab at some possible help in this?

Also twin boys, one of which died shortly after birth.
Janos came to relatives in New Jersey in 1910 and later moved between MA and NYC (working for American Tobacco)
his son my father was named Albert.
Any thing sound familiar?

Hi Karen!

I'm sorry but the "zemplein megye" is not a name of a city/village. It is a name of a county, Zemple'n (or Zemplén), and "megye" means "county".

Nowadays Zemple'n county is divided to parts: a part of this county is in Hungary, the other part is in Slovakia.

An additional info: all of the names written by you are Hungarian.

You have to do some investigation to get closer.

Good luck!

Peter

Arvay

My great great grandfather Michael Arvay was born in Sacurov, northeast of Kosice, in 1813. He married a Maria Viszokai on 5-2-1833. They had 8 children, Mike, Jan, Maria, Andrej, Juraj, Maria(Again), and twins Adam and my great grandfather Pavol. Pavol married a Alzbeta Gyuricsko on Nov 25, 1874. She was from Krivany. They had four children, Paul, Elizabeth (my Grandmother), Anna, and Susan. They came to the USA in the late 1800's and settled in the hard coal region in a town called Jeddo. (not sure of spelling)I am not sure what happened to Paul, but my grandmother came to Indiana Co, Pa. and married my grandfather Mike Rostis or Rostas. Anna first marriage was to a Nick Celmo. After his death she married a Guy Cecconi and settled in Mich. Does anyone have any info. about the above. I have info that mr great grandfathers twin brother Adam also came to the US unknown where. Thanks, Nick

In 1983 I met Rose Arvoy (maiden name, I forgot her married name) from Manteo NC. She was immediately interested in my last name, and we compared spellings. She told me that her family name had also been changed when the family immigrated to America, and had originally been Arvai.

At the time, I would have estimated Rose Arvoy to be about 60. I'm sorry that I do not have an further information about her whereabouts or circumstances. Good luck with your research.

My surname is Arvoy, is this a variation of Arvai? I was once told that the names were changd when the immigrants arrived to americanize the names.

secondly, also I was told from a professor at the U. of Mich. that the name in hungarian ending with the spelling " ai" meant onewas from the lower nobility, the landed aristocracy.

My grandfather emigrated through Port Huron Mich, eventually to settle in Michigan

Can anyone help to clarify/varify/add to these three points.

thanks

They had five other children: Edward, Helen, Andrew, John, & Elizabeth.
They lived in Toledo, Ohio early 1900s. Andrew was born about 1870, Elizabeth about 1876 , both in Hungary. Am working myself on Mary and my grandfather John Pocsik. You don't know anyone that can translate Hungarian to English do you?
Hi Nicholas,

I hope this message reaches you. I saw your briefing about your grand mother. I just started searching my origins and maybe this can be of help to find a thread about our last name, so I decided to try my luck.

As far as I know Arvai comes from the province of Arva (''i''=from) and Arvay comes not only from Arva, but as a so called ''low nobiliary'' title given probably by grace of the feudal ruler then....

My grand father Janos was born in Selmec-Banya, province of Sümeg on Jan 29 1896, and had a brother Josef 2-3 years older that was killed in WWI. My father Zoltan was born in Budapest on 1-1-32 and has a sister born in 1925, Catalina.

I also copied this message to my dad, so he's in the loop.

Best regards,
