Does anyone out there know the origin of the surname Arabi. My grandmother's maiden name was Arabi. She was from Puerto Rico. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Violet

I was told that Arabie was French, but in doing the research, Arabie/Arabi/Araby comes from many different places, Spain, Argentina, Peru, Europe. I have traced my line back to Spain. I have many French-Candian ancestors and geographically, French is not out of the picture. In my research, I have found a reference to the name originally coming from Kuwait (still trying to verify that!). In French, the name translates to "Saudi" or the other variation L'Arabie, "The Saudi". I would love to hear other's thoughts on this.

According to info I received several years ago, through work by Curless & Jessie Arabie: The Arabie name was traced back to Joseph Antonio Araby (D'Araby) - b. about 1756, died 1819 in LaFourche, LA from Majorca (Baleric Islands in the Mediteranian Sea) who married Rita Henriette Perez from the Canary Islands. I'm from the line of their son, Michel (CristoPaolo/Miguel - written both ways) Araby.

The Baleric Islands would be a natural "pit stop" in the Mediteranian. I know the Moors invaded Spain once, the Islands would naturally be a "melting pot" with French, Italian, Spanish & Lebanese/Arabs sailors, fishermaen, tradesmen or soldiers.

Just talked to Jessie this morning and he told me the finally got someone who is willing to help us verify where the Arabie line is from.

Please post this info when you get it. I have just traced our family back to Antonio Araby as well.
Thanks in advance

I have a scanned copy of a marriage certificate Josef Antonio Arabi and Rita Perez, confirming his birth and parentage from Mallorca and hers from Tenerife.
I know of the Islenoes coming from the Canaries at this time, but have encountered no others from Mallorca.

Hello, I know this thread is a bit old now but I was looking for the origins of the name Arabi because my grandmother's mother was Gertude Arabi from Fuerteventura in the Canary Isles. She married Louis Antoine Perez (I have copies of their birth certificates). I have been trying to find out more about her family and wondered if anyone managed to find any info, or if anyone else identified with these names. They moved to/lived in Algiers as Pied Noires.
Thanks
