Hi Rosanne
My name is Carolyn (nee APPS). If you wish to contact me off line you may. I have been doing Family History for over 35 years and knew about your reunion. However I was unable to attend. Would love to know how it all went. I tried a number in Young today and left a message. Hope it is the correct one. If not, then if you reply to this and let me know how I can contact you, then great. I have a lot of info and pics on this family.
Cheers
Carolyn

Re: Josiah Apps

There is a record of a marriage of Josiah EPPS to Ann Dowrick 13 Jan 1717 at Fowey, Cornwall. The record gives his residence as Shoreham, Co Sussex. They could be the parents of Josiah Apps mar 1749. However there are also earlier records of the name EPPS in Cornwall. The surnames Epps and Apps originate from Kent and Sussex and surname studies state that each is a variant of the other as they can sound alike. It seems that Josiah Epps/Apps senior was not the first Epps or Apps to sail from Kent or Sussex to Cornwall to start the Cornwall branch.
I have been resarching the Apps surname for a few years, having traced my own branch back to 1619 in the Hastings area. I have tried to find out where the cornwall branch started, but as you say Josiah is only a guess. It could be they came from the Ewhurst area of sussex only because there were a number of APSE mentioned in the 1600's.

Hi -

I haven't checked this board for a while, and was very interested to see an estimated year of birth (1729) provided for Josiah Sr.

I'm curious to know how you arrived at this date; was it just an assumption that Josiah married at age 20? Or do you have a burial record or MI which gives his year of death and age? Or, better still, have you found a possible christening record somewhere?

Josiah's marriage to Loveday Thomas is the earliest record I've found of the Apps name in Cornwall, although my searches have been limited to online sources (as I live in Canada, a visit to the records office is impractical). I picture Josiah as having been born in SE England (where most of the Apps families were living at that time) and coming to Cornwall as a young man, possibly a sailor. Unfortunately I haven't seen any references for a Josiah Apps baptism anywhere in the country in a suitable time frame (e.g., 1700-1730), so it'll all just supposition for now.

Josiah was my 5xg-grandfather and I'd love to be able to pursue this line back further; if you can shed any light regarding his year of birth, that would be most appreciated.

Thanks -

Tim
Corner Brook, NL
Canada

I was interested in the reply from Clive Killick. Although our Apps branches are probably not directly connected I have traced my Apps line back to the Kent-E.Sussex borders in particular to Tunbridge Wells in the mid 1700's. I am currently looking for a marriage between James Apps and Eleanor in approx 1758. Can anybody help? In the meantime I have gathered a lot of data on various Apps branches in Kent and E.Sussex and would be interested in comparing notes with others researching Apps's from this area. Does anyone know of an Apps one-name society?

I started a reply and the lost the draft!

I believe your Henry Apps is Henry Arthur A Apps, born Brighton, Sussex in 1890 (Q3 2b 233).

The only child I can find for an Apps/Verrall marriage is Iris C G Apps, born Brighton 1914 (Q4 2b 345).

From the 1901 Census the family of Henry AA Apps appears to be:

Robert ... Apps, age 36, born Leighton Buzzard, BDF, a Cabman
Agness Apps, age 33, born Brighton, SSX
Henry A A Apps, age 11, born Brighton, a Scholar
William C Apps, age 3, born Brighton, a Scholar
Robert T Apps, age 1, born Brighton, a Juvenile

In the 1881 census there was an Apps family at 7 Claremont Place, Brighton

Henry APPS, age 51, a Pipe Maker, born Rye, SSX
Elizabeth APPS, age 52, his Wife, born Hastings, SSX
Mary J. APPS, a Daughter, age 21, a Laundress, born	Weighton (sic) Buzzard, BDF
Robert APPS, a Son, age 16, a Grocers Assistant, born Leighton Buzzard
James APPS, a Son, age 11, a Scholar, born Brighton,

The 1851 census has

Henry APPS, age 21, a Pipe Maker, born Rye, SSX
Elizabeth APPS, age 22, his Wife, born Hastings, SSX
Henry James Apps, a son, born c. September 1850, in Rye

There is a marriage of a Henry Apps in the Rye reg’n area in 1849. Henry’s spouse was either Elizabeth Edwards Phillips or Naomi Clarke or Mary Jane Bennett. This information was gleaned from FreeBMD.

My Apps forebears in the 19th century were in Brede, a village about 8 miles west from Rye. I have linked the above family to mine, yet!!

One point, my Killick relations ran the Pipemaker’s Arms pub in Rye for many years!

Hope this is of use.

Clive Killick
killick@one-name.org
Re: APPS FAMILY IN MICHIGAN

Hi -

I'm curious to know if your husband's family are descended from Joseph APPS, who was born in Cornwall, England in 1858. I believed he went to the U.S. around 1878. He appeared in the 1880 census in Champion, Marquette County, although his surname was recorded (or transcribed) as HAPS. At that time, he was single and living with his half-brother, Simon KINSMAN and his family.

By the 1900 census, he was living in Ironwood City, Gogebic County, married to Jane (since 1881) and had two children, Joseph H. and Olive. It appears that he was still living there as a widower in the 1940's.

Joseph was the brother of my great-grandfather, Richard Henry Apps. I have their ancestry back to 1749 if you're interested. If Joseph was your husband's ancestor, please send me an e-mail - my address is: perrott AT nrcan DOT gc DOT ca (hopefully spelling it out this way will cut back on spambots, or whatever they're called).

Best regards,

Tim
Ottawa, Canada

Hi Sue,

I have Joseph Coldridge married to Elizabeth Diggines in 1856 in Exeter reg December quarter. Some of their children started using Coleridge instead of Coldridge, particularly from 1901.

This is Elizabeth Diggines born circa 1829 in Doddiscombsleigh, Devon, who was the daughter of William Diggines and Elizabeth Archer. She died in 1888 I believe.

If you would like to compare the wider picture of the Diggines tree that I have please feel free to email me on sandramelhuish@btinternet.com.

Thank you, Sandra

He had several children including a Thomas, Richard, and Jospeph. My family is orginally from Cornwall but my great grand father George Apps emmigrated to the United States during the 1930s. Any info would be appreciated thanks.

Dear diane I have just come across your posting on this
message board and i would like to let you know that I am
from an Apps family that lived in eastmolesey surrey.
my g grandad who was named Charles Apps was born about
1823 and had about nine children of which one my grand mother was MaryAnn Apps. She would have been born about
1861 and died 1931. My g grandmothers name was
Rebecca Lawrence born 1830 and died 1900. I have read
what you have posted and note that all of your ancesters
were born much before mine,so there could be some relationship. Can you help to check that if you have
the dates following on from yours
Take care and stay lucky
Albert Cannon
