Lewis Montague Anger !896-1930's?

Lewis was born to William and Ada Anger in 1896 at Cove, Farnborough, Hants, UK. His mother died shortly afterwards, and he went to live with his maternal uncle, John Emmett, his wife, Alice, and their daughter, Alice Emily. In 1913 they all emigrated to Canada, arriving in Quebec on October 20th. Lewis fought with the Canadian Forces during WW1, but was discharged after being injured. He became a jeweller, and apparently was killed in a road accident around 1930. Any information would be gratefully received.

I've indexed an article about an August L. W. Anger who celebrated 23 years as a bookkeeper with the V. Schoenecker Boot & Shoe Co. in Milwaukee in 1916. But what's unique about the article is that it reads like an obituary, as in: he was born in Frankfurt an der Oder, 13 March 1846 - and he wasn't even dead yet!
There are about 95 Anger entries or references in the most current data file.

"Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, originator/compiler/editor; Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... whether your ancestor was dead (at the time) or not!

Re:. Cedulie Anger born canada married on 1877 dec 25th to a Telesphore Lavoie

I believe these were my great grandparents. The birth certificates of the children of Telesphore Lavoie have variations on the name of their mother - Odile, Obdulie, Oldunie, etc - but I imagine these actually correspond to your listing of Cedulie. Telesphore Lavoie died in Jan 1909 in Southbridge and his death certificate listed him as widowed, I would be interested to know more details of his wife's life and death (and the correct spelling of her first name). Growing up I heard about how my paternal grandfather, Raoul Lavoie - born in 1901, had been orphaned at a young age and sent to live with an older married sister who lived in Salem, NH (which is where my father and I both grew up). But I never heard much information from my grandfather about his parents, probably because he was so young when they died. Now I am living in Woodstock, CT and working one town away in Southbridge, MA, so it would be interesting to explore more of my paternal family history. My father is now 85 and I know he would like to know more about his grandparents while still possible,

Hi
I read your messages about Charles Anger. He was a brother to my 2nd g.grandfather Emanuel Anger. I have the newspaper article on his wife Stella's death. She drowned Christmas eve in the Welland canal feeder just outside of Dunnville, Ont., Canada and from what I've read and been told by family in Dunnville she was pregnant with their first child. Catherine Amanda was a sister to Charles and Emanuel and had a double wedding ceremony with my G. grandfather Emanuel, where she married Alexander Dorrington. If you would like to exchange info with my please contact me at: birdsloft@hotmail.com. At that time maybe we can arrange to meet up and exchange info. I held an Anger reunion in 2004 and in 2003 had a information exchange day in Dunnville, Ont. where I met a lot of researchers like myself.
Karen

Catherine Amanda was my greatigrandmother and married the mysterious John Duncan Simons who apparently hatched from a pod as I can find no record of him. Their child was Ross Simons - he for some reason would drop the s and go by Simon. His daughter Catherine was my mama. Most of the clan still live in Buffalo. So! Catherine Amanda married Alex Dorrington and had little Eva. Perhaps poor Alex kicked the bucket because she went on to meet and run afoul of the dour John D. which produced Ross.

Hi Stephanie, I am researching Anger as well. And I live near Buffalo, Clarence Center. Charles was listed as an Anger as well as a Smith in 1901 living with John Smith and Lucinda Farr Anger Smith, his mother.
Eva was child of Amanda (Catharine) Anger and Alex Dorrington, but I could not find any birth info on her. And she lived with neither parents, only Grandmother Lucinda. I do believe that Amanda (Katherine) married John Simons of Buffalo NY as she is living with him in 1910, 1915 and 1920.
A couple of Family Trees list Eva's death in 1973, but I find no supporting info for that.
Ellen

I found a family history website with 3 Frederick Angers living in the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812:
http://dorothystewart.net/genealogy/anger-family-tree/

None of these three men appear to match the information in the 1851 Census for Grey Co. but do appear to be the men who served in the 2nd York and Lincoln Militias during the war. This raises the question of when your Frederick Anger came to Upper Canada and who his parents were as he did not match their birth dates or was not born in the US or Canada.

In 1812 General Brock ordered each militia to form two flank companies of men of proven loyalty to the British. The flank companies would receive additional military training and would be the first companies called out in the event of an American invasion. About 120 men volunteered from the 2nd York but only about 80 were selected in the initial recruitment. Frederick Anger was accepted for service in a flank company on June 4th. General Brock requested proven loyalty as some militia recruitment areas were dominated by recent American immigrants who may not have been loyal to the British. The Americans gambled that the Upper Canadians would welcome liberation from the British. Many of these volunteers belonged to United Empire Loyalist families. Have you searched for Frederick in the loyalist lists online. Document 95 was a later report back to Brock on the status of the flank companies in the 2nd York.

Document 226 was the payroll for Captain John Chisholm’s Flank Company which took part in the decisive charge on Queenston Heights on Oct. 23rd. It appears that Frederick was present during the battle. I recommend A Very Brilliant Affair, The Battle of Queenston Heights, 1812, by Robert Malcolmson, Robin Brass Studio Inc., 2003, for a good description of that battle.

Frederick may have seen action again on July 18, 1814 at the burning of St. David’s if he was not sick on that day. He appears to have been well by July 25th when the company he was serving with was at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane (Document 158). My ancestor, Private Ebenezer Blair, served with him. I recommend Where Right and Glory Lead! The Battle of Lundy’s Lane, 1814 by Donald E. Graves, Robin Brass Studio, Toronto, 2003, for a description of these two engagements. The roll the company played in the Battle of Lundy’s Lane is interesting.

Frederick made a land claim as a veteran of the war some time after 1814. My ancestor made his in 1824 and received 200 acres in Peel Co. I do not know if any land grants were given in Grey County. Frederick may have settled on a land grant and later moved to Grey Co.

I am continuing my research on the war in the Niagara Peninsula and will get back to you if I learn more about the Anger family. Thank you for your help.
Hi. My Angers are from Philadelphia, PA and Tennessee. I don't think I'm related to any Canadian Angers, but I'll post my info anyway. My great-great grandparents Herman and Lena Anger immigrated from Germany and settled in Tennessee, where they got married, and they eventually moved to Philadelphia. My great-grandfather Sam Anger was born in Tennessee in 1867. He married Mary Gannister (I'm guessing they married in Pennsylvania, but I haven't yet found their marriage record). Per the censuses they lived in Philadelphia and also in Camden, NJ. Their children were Herman, Lena, Paul, Sam, Mary, and Charlotte (my grandmother). They also had a daughter Adeline who died when she was 2. Good luck with your research!

Hi Sam, My name is Lynda Louise Laur. My mother's maiden name was Verna B. Anger. Her father was Austin Edgar Anger, born in Port Burwell, Ontario. But he is related to the Angers of Walsingham, Ontario. One of his relatives there was a Lorne Anger, a cousin of some sort I think, who was a bootlegger of great reknown and obviously extremely well-known in the area. I have run into several people from that area who were born after Lorne died, but who still know who he was. I was told that he was handsome, well-to-do, and always drove a beautiful team of horses. My cousin, Chris Anger, has a picture of him that I will be getting a copy of when we plan to get together in the New Year. Chris has a great deal of information on the Anger family, particularly Augustus' line from around the Niagara Falls area. I don't have his e-mail on this computer that I am sending this from, or I'd put it in this post. If you wish to obtain it, contact me at my home e-mail adress l_sykes@skynet.ca, and I'll give you Chris's e-mail address.

LOL yes we definately are related. As far as I know, these Anger people past and present are too concerned with recording history.
I know your gma Ida, have visited there several times as a child.
My father Edward Chris Anger was born at Corrine (near Morse) in 1908.
He is the youngest son, followed by Leona. His mother, Annie died in childbirth sometime later. The infant died as well.
I think it is awesome that you have traced so far back.
Can you tell me whose child you are? My mother named all Idas children but could not recall all their childrens names. You can email me direct at rattlakegirl@yahoo.ca

Yes!!! All three are part of my family tree! Eva Klabuhn and Christian Anger (parents of Christian J. "Chris" Anger)are my gr gr grandparents, Daniel Anger and Gottliebe Pick are my gr gr gr grandparents, and Christoph Anger and Regina Hollatz would be my gr gr uncle and aunt! As far as I can discern, all were born in Germany and none immigrated, Christian J. being of the first generation in this family to do so. I do not know if any of his siblings immigrated, but there are a few whose German information stops at birth and baptism, which leads me to assume they also immigated. (I also cannot read German, so my understanding of all the information of my sources is not the greatest!) :-) Their destination of choice seems to have been the US, although Christian J. immigrated to Canada from Wisconsin in 1908.

If you have further information on the 3 Frederich's, I would appreciate any you can forward! I have none on Regina Hollatz's Fredrich, and only know that Daniel Anger's and Christian Anger's Frederichs died in Germany.

Rattlakegirl, Was your father born in Saskatchewan? My grandmother Ida had a brother Edward born 1908, probably near Morse (Swift Current) (1916 Census) or Regina (1911 Census. His father Christian J. and mother Annie were farming near these communties soon after arrival in Saskatchewan in 1908 from Clark County Wisconsin. I don't have a middle name for Edward. I understand he lived near or in North Battleford for a time.

We are very likely related!

I have traced the family back to Johann Friederich Hanger in Neidenstein, Bayreuth, Bayern, Germany in the 1600's but have huge blanks in the grandparent generation.

My Angers were for the most part born in the US and if they moved to Canada from Wisconsin or were born here either stayed in Canada (Ida, father Christian, mother Annie, Lydia or Leona, Edward stayed as far as I know) or moved to Washington (Paul), Delaware (Otto) and California (Lydia or Leona). The one I know stayed in Wisconsin is Arnold. But they could have moved anywhere between birth and death, or after the last place I have for them. I don't know where Anna M. or Emma ended up. So your Angers are a possibility. Any of these names ring a bell?

I just found a very helpful site for Angers before they came to the USA which goes back aways.

http://www.westpreussen.de/einwohner/index.php?m=family&...

Easy to translate into mostly English, but still requires some translation.

Good background but there doesn't seem to be information following emigration, but I haven't had much chance to explore it yet.

Christian J. Anger (son of Christian Anger and Eva Klabuhn)married an Annie (Rademaker?) (possibly Anne Amelia or Amelia Anne) probably after they emigrated as she is not mentioned on this site. Would appreciate any information on her. I only know she was born in Germany, emigrated to Wisconsin, emigrated 1908 to Saskatchewan, Canada.

Would also appreciate information on Otto, Leona, Paul, Edward, Ida, Emma, Lydia, and Anna M. Anger. Edward and Leona were born in Saskatchewan, the rest in the Wisconsin (I think).

I sent you an email with most of what I know about my Anger side of the family from Ida down. I didn't list all the grandchildren. Let me know if you got it. Did you visit Ida at the Moose Square address or the High Street house? I vaguely remember the Moose Square house as my dad bought the one next door shortly after he and mom were married. I certainly remember the High (or maybe River) Street house as the fellow next door blew his house up working on his furnace! I remember at the end of the street were the greenhouses that supplied the flowers for Crescent Park, and for a few years housed the swans and ducks during the winter. It was a really sad day when they removed so much of the beautiful stone work done during the 1930's from Crescent Park. I remember the house being filled with Grandma's crafts and Grandpa working in his flower beds.

The info on the 1851 census is:

Frederick Anger
Gender: Male
Age: 72
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1780
Birthplace: England
Province: Canada West (Ontario)
District: Grey County
District Number: 11
Sub-District: Melancthon and Proton
Sub-District Number: 92,95

He is shown as living with Eliza Anger (age 29) and his "son" is my great great grandfather. Marriage records state that Frederick and Eliza were the "parents" of my gg grandfather Robert Anger but I have come against a brick wall regarding any other information. I cannot find any info on him prior to this....and no birth records for my gg grandfather to clarify if in fact Frederick was his father or his grandfather.

Thanks so much for any info you may have to help clarify things.

Hi Candice,

I realize yours is a very old post. My great-grandfather was Samuel Anger and my grandmother was Lena Anger. Samuel was born in Tennessee. His father, Herman Anger, immigrated to US from Germany. Samuel Anger ended up marrying Mary Gannister (also of Germany) and they had five children and lived in Philadelphia and New Jersey. They had five children: Herman, Paul, Sam, Jr., Charlotte, and Lena. Not sure if any of these folks are related to your Angers of Germany.

You sent me information about 3 years ago about Charlotte Anger and Anthony Holt. I think I may have found a couple of siblings that immigrated to Midland, Mi.

One is Isaac Anger, born March 4, 1848 in canada. He died May 4, 1912 and is buried in the Midland Cemetery. His death certificate listed his parents as Peter Anger, PA. and Rachel Sprigher, born Prussia. Informant was his son, John Anger. You can find the original death certificate on www.seeking michigan.org

His wife was Susanna Keener(Keaner) born July 7, 1854. She died Nov. 28, 1901. Isaac and Susanna were married Dec. 13, 1876 in Huron Co., Howick Twp.

Another possible brother to Charlotte is George Anger, born Sept. 23, 1840 and died March 17, 1923. He married a Mary Kenner (Keaner) and they had 11 children. She died August 30, 1901. They are buried in the LaPorte Cemetery, Midland, Mi. In the 1861 Ontario census a Charlot is living with a George Anger and the Brothers family is only a couple houses away. I think it was Walshingham, Norfolk, Ont, ,pg. 60, Line 44.

Peter Anger is my gr. grandfather and he had a daughter named Charlotte born around 1862. He married an Emily Demman and they came to Mi in 1886. He also named a son Isaac.

I think we may have a family tie-don't know if it is sibling or cousin. I'm so glad I kept all the information you sent me.

Thank you for query. Although I have found 9 militia references to Frederick Anger, I have not been able to find any personal information yet. I know he served from 1812 to 1814, was between 16 and 60, and was probably living near Wentworth County at the time. I also know that he made a land claim after the war as a veteran.

The land claim may tell you where he was living at the time he made the claim and may give you some additional information about him. I found this record in An Index of the Land Claim Certificates of Upper Canada Militiamen who served in the War of 1812-1814, compiled by Wilfred R. Lauber, Ont. Genealogical Society, Toronto, 1995, transcribed from RG9 IB4, Volume 18, pages 262-265. You can order copies of these pages from Collections and Library Canada. There will of course be a charge.

These pages are for Frederick Anger of the 2nd Regiment of York Militia and for Frederick Anger Jr. of the 1st Flank Company of the 3rd Regiment of Lincoln Militia. This suggests that father and son had the same name! Frederick Anger also served with the 5th Lincoln which suggests that he may have been living near the border of Lincoln and York Counties at that time. Some men served in more than one regiment at different times.

My ancestor made his land claim in 1824 from Vaughan Twp., York County and received his land grant the same year in Albion Twp., Peel County. He was still living on this land in 1851 as were his descendants almost a hundred years later. Where was Frederick living in 1851?

You will find Frederick Anger’s name under Anger, Angar, Angen, and Anker in my transcripts at:

http://www.ogs.on.ca/services/1812-militia.php

You will also find my email address there. Please contact me if you would like more information on Private Frederick Anger.

Fred Blair
Orillia
Hi!
My husband is an Anger from Waushara Co., Wisconsin. His father, Arther Allen Anger, was born/lived in Evanston, Ill. before moving to WI.

Arthur's father was Walter Anger of Milwaukee. Arthur's grandfather was, I believe, Ernst G. Anger, who moved to Milwaukee. Records say he immigrated here from Prussia or Germany around 1848. I have a immigration record of an Ernst Anger from Writzern, Writzer, Wriszern . . . I can't figure it out.
