I had a query about someone in a tree that I have been looking at so did a bit of digging.
He was Richard COWHERD born Prescot in Lancashire 1870. He was a telegraphist / telegraph clerk.
In 1893 he married Minnie AMESBURY in Wigan 1893. She was born in Danville, USA in ABT 1870 (no state given) and her father was Richard Price AMESBURY who was an engineer.
I have some help on the LANCSGEN list and been looking on Ancestry UK and FMP. Richard Price AMESBURY seems to be the son of Harriet AMESBURY and born in Uphill/Bleadon/Hop Hill Somerset in ABT 1833.
He seems to be in Pennsylvania in the US 1870 census presumably just before Minnie was born. He just shown as a labourer then (if the same person) and in 1881 he was back in England in County Durham, a widower just with Minnie and was a Puddler in an Iron Forge.
I am intrigued by him being in the US for a few years then returning.
I lost Richard and Minnie COWHERD after the 1901 UK census but there are suggestions they went to South America as both names appear on passenger lists after then though Richard is an accountant so perhaps he did well as there were plenty of opportunities in South America.
