Mary "Amburgey" Wheeler-Russell County, Virginia

James Wheeler (b. 1791 in Washington Co.,VA) was married to Mary (b. 1796) about 1813. Most researchers have her maiden name as Amburgey although I not seen evidence for that name. Does anyone know where that data came from?

If Mary indeed has the surname Amburgey, then whose daughter was she? She could not have been the daughter of John Amburgey b. 1758 as his daughter Mary was born 1808. Mary Amburgey Wheeler was born around the same time has John's other children, so Mary cannot be the daughter of one of John's sons. John's father John Sr. doesn't seem to have had any other sons.

Any ideas?
Sandra

It looks like Phoebe is the daughter of Susana Amburgey, who you noticed living next door to the Huffs in one of the censuses. Apparently Susana Boggs married Nathan/Nathaniel Huff and gave birth to Phoebe, who was a Huff prior to her marriage to Jasper Newton. Susana's husband Nathan/nathaniel then died about 1861 or so, probably in the war, and Susana Boggs Huff then married William G Amburgey. Other public trees on the web suggest this.

I did make a mistake in my earlier post. John Amburgey, Jr. was born in Culpeper County, VA, which was formed from Orange County in 1749. The Amburgeys sold their Culpeper County property in December 1774 and first appeared in Surry County NC records in 1775.

Re: Amburgey/Baker

My gg grandmother Nancy Ann Puckett (abt 1862-1896) was the daughter of William (abt 1823-1886) and Minerva Puckett (abt 1823- ?) of Estill and Lee Counties, Kentucky. She married Robert "Robin" Amburgey (1860-1946) in Lee County, Kentucky in 1880. They had many children, the last my great grandmother Jessie, before Nancy died at an early age in Wisconsin.

I believe William and Minerva had a son, William Jr. (born 1859-?) that married Nettie Baker. I have C.E. Bush's Townsend Mountain, that documents this. And, Nettie Baker seems to be the daughter of James Baker and Nancy Amburgey (Robert's sister)? Nancy Puckett isn't in this book, but I placed her in this family with the 1870 and 1880 census records.

I am having a hard time tracing the Puckett family back before William and Minerva. I noticed that you also had a thread for the Puckett family. If you have any luck or anyone else does, please reply to this post or email degroot UNDERSCORE jennifer AT yahoo.com. Thanks.

Hi, My name is Mary Milliken. I am trying to aid my sister in finding her birth father. Here is what we know. My sister is Teresa Lynn Walters. Our mother was Beulah Amburgey from Isom KY. Parents were Blaine and Ida Mae Amburgey.Beulah married James Shehan Walters from salyersville Ky.Teresa took the name Walters after our mother married my father, but her last name for the 3 years prior to the marriage is unknown. She does not remember, and nobody will say.Her birth certificate has Thomas Ward of Thomasville, N.C listed. She remembers seeing a picture of mother, herself and a man sitting on a bench and it says Thomas Ward 10-8-51(which is my sister's birthday). I remember seeing a picture that mom had of Teresa that read... Teresa Collins. James Collins was mentioned several times. So, who is her father? I understand this may have been a guarded family secret, but Teresa is in failing health. History cannot be changed.....and It is what it is. Teresa does not harbor any ill feelings towards anyone...She just wants to know who her father is. Please.... if you can help us, contact me.

Thanks so much,
Mary Milliken
penny_penn02@yahoo.com

John, Jr's grandfather, Conrad was the first to come to America. Conrad's ancestors were all born in Germany but all of his descendents were born in America. There is a book, Amburgey Ancestry in America by Dorothy Amburgey Griffith, published in 1982 that has the history of the Amburger/Amburgey family.
Leonard Pigman (Pigmon) and John Amburgey, Jr.(Burgey)

Recently I found the graves of two of my 4th great-grandfathers buried next to each other and some records. Both Leonard Pigmon and John Amburgey, Jr.(was always called Burgey) were in the American Revolutionary War and were closely associated families. John Amburgey's dau. Rosie (Rosana) married Leonard's son John Pigmon.(my 3rd great grandparents)

John Amburgey was born in Upper Rein Valley Germany. His Father whose name was Amburger was from Bonnigheim, Germany which is just over the mountain I think. Research tells me that the people of Bourg-en-Breese, France in the Ain district are called Burgies. The early American Pigmans spelled their name Pigmon (the pronunciation on Google translate of Peigman sounds the same) and were said to be from Alsace-Lorraine but maybe they were from Rhone-Alpes region, Ain department. In reading the link about the hemp-combers (the Pigneurs) and their migration habits, I was wondering if they were migrating across the border from Switzerland. I do not know the geography there very well and of course the border kept changing but maybe they were working in France from September to December and going back across the mountain to a Swiss commune to farm the rest of the time. Do you know of a village that still has records there I could check or maybe in Switzerland? How far away would that be from the border?

I did read that most of the records in Bourg-en-Breese were destroyed during the French Revolution. Is that true for the records in the Ain communes as well?

The English version in Google translate is here http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&h...

P.S. My Pigman y-dna is R1b12a1a2d3 or Y L-2*) which is primarily from the Swiss,French,Austrian,Italian Alps and does not match another Pigman who is descended from the Immigrant John Pigman of Maryland. Hmmm maybe there were seperate Pigmans coming to the colonies? Possibly with John Amburgey as soldiers to fight with the French?

John Amburgey, Jr. and Leonard Pigman are both my 5th great-grandfathers. John Amburgey, Jr. was born in Orange County, VA in 1758. His father, John Amburgey, was born about 1727 in Spotsylvania County, VA. John's father, Hans Conrad Amberger, was born 1683 in Bonnigheim, Wurttemberg, Germany. In 1717, Conrad and other immigrants from Germany arrived in Virginia and were indentured to Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood for 7 or 8 years. The graves which you refer to are just behind the Pigman Cemetery in Knott County. There is a large DAR monument honoring John in the Carr Creek Memorial Cemetery.

Hello Donald,

My mom sent me this link because I have been researching the tree for quite some time. Going up into the John J Amburgey side is tricky because there were 3 separate John J's married to 3 separate Nancy J's, and everyone keeps combining all the children to one John J. It is impossible because the default Nancy would have only been 7 when having her first child because the first one was born in 1875. Here is the info for all three John J's:

John J Amburgey Feb 1863 - Apr 15 1942
Nancy Jane Smith Oct 3 1868 - Nov 4 1924
8 Children

John J Amburgey Feb 9 1859 - 1930's
Nancy J Combs 1857 - Oct 22 1924
5 Children

John J Amburgey 1861 - Unknown
Nancy J Honeycut 1877 - Jan 22, 1923
5 Children

The first John J is our ancestry (Hiram Wesley). I believe your William Albert is from the 2nd John J because his sister Lydia was the one born in 1875.

- Joey
