Is there by any chance a Matthew from the union of John and Dorothy ? Did Matthew have a son John who married and had a daughter Elizabeth ? I have gotten back to Elizabeth Alston/Alliston, who married Thomas Bye, and I am trying to confirm who her parents were.

I have read your father's book, Ancestor's and Kin and found it most delightfully helpful. I lived in Hartsville for many years, not knowing that I had so many connections to the Pee Dee in my background...I am also a descendant of Lemuel Benton.
I am very interested in your information about the "Royal Bastards" and would like to take you up on your offer. My connection is through Samuel Warnock and Phereby Tuttle, but there may be other connections also.
Thank you,
Anne Wiggins Smith

Wondering about the Allstons of Brunswick, NC, specifically a Peter Allston who is listed in the 1769 tax records for Brunswick. The 1790 Census also lists a Peter Allston in Bladen Co., NC, which is not far from Brunswick. Is this Peter from the lineage of Benjamin/Josias Allston, or is he from Peter Allston, Sr., third son of John the immigrant? I am aware that Peter Allston, Jr., who married Mary Bacot, sometime after his last son, John Hayes Allston was born (1786) moved to Lake Waccamaw, NC, which at that time was in Bladen Co., but in 1769 he was living in the Georgetown, SC area. Appreciate any information on the lineage of this Peter.

Okay, with the help of a descendant, I believe that I have finally got the correct answer. The answer I got about the tombstone is this: "John is just a mistake. I remember my great uncle being distressed over it. Benjamin would have been his grandfather."

The following information was taken from the HISTORICAL ATLAS OF THE RICE PLANTATIONS OF GEORGETOWN COUNTY AND THE SANTEE RIVER by Suzanne Cameron Linder and Marta Leslie Thacker with preliminary research by Agnes Leland Baldwin. The descendant I spoke with contributed photographs/art for this book and her husband served as a Director for the Historic Ricefields Associations. This book was published by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History for the Historic Ricefield Association, Inc.

Benjamin ALLSTON, Sr. was the son of Josias ALLSTON (d. 1776) and his second wife, Anne PROCTOR. Benjamin Allston was a self-made man. He started out as an overseer and worked his way up the ladded of success and eventually owned several plantations in the Georgetown District, including Turkey Hill (his father's old homeplace), Oatland, Waterford, Richmond, and Rosemont. He married three times but he had no sons and only one daughter, Martha Allston, to survive him. Benjamin's first wife, Mary Charlotte Cook, was the mother of three daughters, Mary Charlotte, Anne Elizabeth, and Martha. After Mary's death, Benjamin was married on January 23, 1803 to Dorothy Johnston Singellton, widow of John Singellton, who owned property on the Pee Dee. Dorothy died February 18, 1807 in the forty-third year of her age, without children. Benjamin married Mary Coachman, daughter of Benjamin Coachman of Charleston. The Allstons probably lived at Oatland plantation. Benjamin Allston had a summer residence near Greenville and probably traveled to Asheville and other mountain retreats. Benjamin Allston was referred to as "Deaf Ben." It is remembered that he spoke "like a Negro, not only in pronunciation but even in tone." He may have suffered an infection as a child that caused him to lose his hearing. If he had been reared by a black nurse and played with slave children, it is not surprising that he would speak like them. Once he lost his hearing, he would have had little opportunity to hear educated people speak and improve his diction.

As for Benjamin Allston's ancestry. John and William Allston were sons of the immigrant John Allston, who had initially settled in St. John Berkeley. The two sons eventually migrated to Georgetown. They may have followed their sister Mary, who married George Pawley, son of Percival. John Allston and his wife Deborah, had five children and resided at Unesaw. Allston also acquired land on the Pee Dee, which included Chicora Wood, and in his will he specifically bequeathed his property to his sons. His eldest son and namesake received "the tract of land whereon I now live . . . containing 490 acres," provided John Jr. deed the Pee Dee Plantation (Chicora Wood) to his brother Josias. Evidently John was satisfied to stay on the Pee Dee and decided to to retain it, so Josias took over Turkey Hill. Josias Allston was not yet twenty years old when he inherited his father's plantation. He married three times and had a large family. Before her death in 1754, his first wife, Esther Simons, bore him one son, Francis. Josias soon after married Ann Proctor, and they had nine children. Ann Proctor Allston died in 1773, and Josias married Esther Brown, daughter of William Brown, who had owned property on the Black River. When Josias Allston died in 1776, he was a resident of Bruswick, North Carolina. He had sold Turkey Hill in 1772 to his first cousin Joseph Allston (who owned The Oaks next door), and then purchased a large tract at Little River at the North Carolina border. Although Josias Allston had sold his father's home plantation, he did not forget family traditions. Allston had retained a piece of property 105 feet square on Turkey Hill "for a burial place for the family of John Allston, Sr. forever." His will directed that if he passed away in South Carolina, he wanted to be interred "at my old burying ground on Waccamaw and the body of my wife removed there." Allston must have died in North Carolina, where he was buried in the churchyard next to his second wife Ann, who had recently died.

John Allston m. Dorothy Temple 1635 (England)

(Name also spelled Alstone and Alston).
This marriage produced 3 sons and 3 daughters known to have married. I can trace 2nd son (William) who produced 3 sons who married. I can trace 3rd son (John) who came to S.C. in 1682 and married Elizabeth Turgis and had 6 children (John, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Peter, and Thomasin).
If you can trace ancestry back to the marriage of John Allston and Dorothy Temple, it may be of interest that my father (Robert Walden Coggeshall) has "proved" 5 different lines from Dorothy's father (Sir John) back to illegitamate offspring of English Kings. This proof has been accepted by the "Royal Bastards" (Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of the Kings of Britain). If you are interested in more details, I can be reached at coggesha@corecomm.net
