We are lead to believe that the Agar name orginates from Norway/Denmark area and could stem from the Viking landings in England. Is anyone know that if this is true? If not were does the name orginate? We would also love to hear from anyone who has any info on Agar's from this part of England.

Alan, In my branch of the Agar family from Sheffield, England, the name is derived from its Hebrew version which is Eger. My paternal grandfather changed it to "Agar" because that is how the English pronounced it. This is not much help to you, but thought you might find it interesting. As for the Viking version re: Agar, could be true, as for a time, they ruled England. Funny thing is, on my mother's Scottish side, (Nicol) I found that we are descended from the Vikings! Good luck, Ruth

Hello I've just seen these postings with regards to the Agar name.My grandmother
Was an Agar ... one of 13 children, they had close ties to Durham, Bishop Auckland Newcastle and other towns surrounding this county. She was called Sarah ... also known as Sally and eventually through marriage became Simpson. The family all had beautiful blue eyes...there are still family member's who live there today
