Hi

I wonder if anyone can help - been trying to solve this for 8 years with no luck. If you know anything about this family I'd love to hear from you. Or any suggestions of where to look next. I've no living relatives connected to him.

My great grandfather was known to us as George Edward Agar and DOB 03/10/1891. He said he was born in Custom House, London (Newham). I've hit a brick wall with him, sent for many birth certs and not found any that appear to match area, father's name (given on marriage cert) or DOB - also contacted many with George Agars / Agers and variants in their tree only to rule them out on the basis of marriage or death.

Here's what I know for sure:

Marriage - January 23rd 1916, St Luke’s Church, Victoria Dock, Parish of West Ham.
George Edward Agar – 23 – Bachelor – Fireman – 11 Rendle Road – Father, George Agar – Fireman
Ellen Blackman – 24 – Spinster – 11 Rendle Road – Father, Edward Blackman (this is incorrect, she was married twice, so father and maiden name is Coleman / Colbourne) – Labourer
Witnesses – A Johnson and Rose Louisa St. Pier (Rose appears to have lived close Ellen to in a census and this is her maiden name, so assuming a friend rather than relative).

Work / Life - I have George's Merchant Navy Medal Card:
Surname: Agar
Christian Name: George
Certif or Dis A: 679011
RS2 No: 402422
Place of Birth: -
Date of Birth: 1892

Mercantile Marine Ribbon and British Medal Ribbon issued on 11.09.19. Sent to MMO Victoria Docks, 36 Crown Street, Tidal Basin, West Ham.
Mercantile Marine Medal Issued 08.06.21
British Medal Issued MMR: Notified
Application dated 12 Sept. 1919 - Signed.

Also have his Merchant Navy Registry Card which has a picture (I have other pictures so 100% certain): As well as physical appearance this has the same address as the medal card (and children's birth cert addresses), same numbers as the card, ship numbers and DOB as 03/10/1891.

Children: 1916 - 1977 (Ellen Rose Everlin), 1919 - 1941 (George Edward), 1921 - 1924 (Edward Henry), b1924 m1948 d2006 (Violet Rose Ena), 1926 - 1963 (Harry Charles). No information to add to from their birth, marriage or death certs other than occupations / addresses in the same area.

Death: 22 June, 1986, aged 94. Dartford is on his cert.

I am wondering if Henry Agar is related - born around 1895 is linked to him...this is very tentative but worth looking at. I found a Merchant Navy Medal card for him with his picture. There is a man who looks very similar (although would be 30+ years older) in George's daughter's wedding photo with the family. Not 100% sure its the same man, but he is very very similar. Again, other than indefinite info from his later life such as marriage in the same year, church and area as George and his children (one who is called George Edward), I've not found anything to link him to George.

I've tried to attach George's Registry Card, Henry's Registry Card and Violet's wedding photo to see if anyone is recognised...also would like thoughts on whether Henry does look like anyone in the picture because it may be my wishful thinking!

Any help is much appreciated!

Zoe
