Mark: My father,Nathan Agar was from Sheffield,England amd came to U.S. alone at age 11, to join his father, Morris Henry in Brooklyn,N.Y. Yes, the name "Agar" came about in England, as the original name was "Eger." On Dad's side we are descended from Rabbi Akiva Ben Simhah Bunim Eger who was born in Halberstadt, Germany, and died in Posen where he was Rabbi. My brother is Robert Agar of Westport, Conn. He and wife Barbara had three children: Bradley, Billy, and Bonnie. Why do I have the feeling we are related? Perhaps because our family information is so similar. After all, how many Agar's (who changed their name from Eger)could there have been in Sheffield? Nathan's paternal grandmother was Miriam. My late sister was named after her. Dad said his parents came from Germany and Russia. So let me know if this helps you. I am trying to fill the gap between my grandfather Morris (Moses Aaron was his Hebrew name),and our ancestor the Rabbi Akiva. I do have more info should you believe we are on the same track in our searches. Ruth

Dear Mrs. Lowery,

I see you have been corresponding with my cousin Mark R. I am the grandson of Samuel Agar who emigrated to the US from Sheffield. Mark R is descended from Samuel's sister Jane. Samuel and Jane's parents were Louis Agar and Miriam Hambrough.
The third child's name was Moshe (Morris??).

I didn't see Mark's reply to you. Did he go through all this?

I agree that it seems likely that we are related. In fact, I am almost sure that my mother (Edith Agar)has mentioned an Uncle Morris. I will ask her about it and let you know.

By the way, I have been told many times that I am descended from Rabbi Akiva Agar.

Did you father work in Manhattan, maybe on Pine Street?

Dear Lowell B., So great to hear from you!Yes indeed we are related.Your grandfather Samuel Agar was my grandfather Moshe's (Morris's) BROTHER.I well remember visiting his as a child, with my father. At the time, "Uncle Sam" as dad called him (so did I), lived on Staten Island.I recall he was a very nice person;pleasant and calm with a warm smile. My father Nathan was a C.P.A. and had an office for many years at 51 Chambers Street, Manhattan. He passed away in 1978 at the age of nearly 90. I well remember him telling me a year before his death, that his grandmother Miriam was loved by him above all others. I have a photo of her, I don't recall ever meeting Jane, but wish I had.Mark did not get back to me, but I am so glad you saw our correspondence. How strange that our mothers had the same name. My mother was also known as Edith Agar. Actually, Edith was her middle name.Mother died in 1974 at the age of 74. Yes indeed, we are descended from Rabbi Akiva Eger (Agar). The Hebrew name Eger was changed to Agar, I was told, because when the family emigrated to England, the English pronounced it thus. Dad told me his father Morris had it changed because he got sick of hearing it mispronounced. I have researched quite a bit about Rabbi Akiva. Would you like to know all I have found? It is very interesting. He was quite a person and we come from quite a long line of Rabbis. Please stay in touch. Your cousin (third? second?), Ruth

Dear Ruth,

So nice of you to respond and so quickly, too.

I spoke to my mother last night and she confirmed all that we have been corresponding about over the last 24 hours. My father (Bernard Berg) seemed to recall that either you or your husband were involved in some sort of employment business and obtained home help for them when I was a child. How's his memory?

I do not remember my Grandpa Sam, since he passed away in 1948 when I was two. However, there are many pictures of him, from which one could guess that he had a very sunny disposition.

I don't recall if I ever actually met your parents, but I remember hearing of your father, probably from my Uncles Sol and Herman Agar, who I think knew him well. I think that is the source of my recollection of the office in Manhattan.

I wish I could be of more help in filling in the gap between Sheffield and Germany, but I don't have any information. However, there is a relative (I do not know the relationship) in England, Victor Stone, whose e-mail address I had at one time. I think I can get it from my cousin Jane Klaw. Jane also has a copy of an old family memoir that I have been hoping to get a hold of. I will get that and share it with you.

Would love to hear from you concerning Rabbi Akiva.

Best regards,

Second Cousin (I think) Lowell Agar Berg

I am off to Israel today and will follow up Jane/Ruth's correspondence on my return to clear up a number of inaccuracies in it since I have quite some factual information on the family.

1. The name seems to have been EIGER and was originally used by Louis (Lebel) Agar the father in Sheffield. Morrice/Maurice HARRY Agar (Moses Aaron Agar registered at birth) was born in Sheffield NOT in |Germany.

2. Emily BROADY (spelt as such in Egland)who born in Poland married MHL in West Hartlepool where her family lived and went to live in Sheffield.

3. MHL property and/or business was transferred to my grandfather, a cousin of MHL prior to his emigration to the USA.

4. I have copy birth certs of I believe all MH/Jane's children born and died in Sheffield. (Also of Uncle Sam's!)

Best wishes.Victor Stone
