I have been searching for information on the ancestors of my great-grandfather William F. (Franklin?) Adkins b. Sept 1883; d. 1953.

He was married to Minnie Emma Scott. Their children were William J., Charles, Mary E., & Dorothy A (Possibly more?).

I am not sure where he was born, but the earliest records I found on him are:

A) The record of his marriage to Minnie on April 18, 1908 in her parent (John Arnold Scott & Emma Anne Holt)'s Bible

B) 1910 Census - They lived in Rockingham, VA in 1910 and his parents were from Virginia as well.

Does anybody know anything about him before 1908?

Marcy: Somewhere along the way I received reference to a book called, HISTORY OF FENTRESS COUNTY, TENNESSEE. In this book there is mention of Owen and Agnes...I found this in my notes...

Owen Adkins and wife Agnes, were killed by Indians in 1790.

Their orphaned children were split up to live with
their uncles, Peter and Lewis, in Hopkins and Christian
Counties, Book..HISTORY OF FENTRESS COUNTY, TENNESSEE,

the author interviewed 102 year-old Martha McDonald in 1920.
She was the daughter of Milly Adkins Smith one of the
orphaned children. Martha reported John and Margaret
Goad as the grandparents of Milly thus the parents of Agnes. The family
Bible of Phillip and Milly (Adkins) Smith had been left to Martha
although its later location was unknown. Martha told her children that
notations in it reported that Agnes and Owen had been killed by Indians
on Bays Mountain. The only Goads known to be on Bays Mountain at the
time was John and Margaret Goad. Agnes is of the correct age to have
been their daughter. This is only an estimated year of birth based upon the assumption that
she may have been about 20-years-old when she married.

obituary of their grandson Wyatt Adkins who d. in 1882 "his grandparents were natives of VA and after marriage and having a considerable family removed to Hawkins Co. TN, then a territory, where about the year 1790, with 2 of their children, were massacred by Indians".

I have no idea where I copied this article from...but perhaps the book might help you locate the information you need.

Owen Adkins/Agnes Goad 1750 - 1790

Owen Adkins married Agnes Goad in 1768 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. Both were born in that county as well in 1750. Notes I have indicate that they had five children, Benjamin (1770 in VA-1839 in KY)Wyatt (1772 in VA - ?), Emily 1779 in VA - ?, James 1781 in TN (really VA at that time), and Owen 1783. Information from several trees indicate that Owen and Agnes and family moved to what is now Tennessee, possibly Hawkins Co. or Sullivan Co, Wautauga Settlement. They were joined by Agnes' mother, Margaret Childes Goad. Does anyone know how they died, where exactly they were, or what happened to the children? Benjamin eventually moved to Wayne Co. KY, married, built a mill, a family and died there. Any help would be appreciated.

My husband, Gene, is in the line of Benjamin Adkins via his daughter Sarah "Sally" who married Washington Young, their daughter Catherine married Joel Keeton, their daughter Sarah married Charles Elam, their daughter Martha Jane married William Dobbs Jr., their son Luther married Grace Burnett, and their son is Gene. Benjamin is ggggGrandfather. I show his father as being Owen Adkins who married Agnes Goad, both born in Pittsylvania, VA and died in 1790 in TN. If this ties to your information, I would be glad to share with you what I have and hopefully learn more from you.
You can email me direct if you prefer: mgdobbs@fuse.net
According to a source, Agnes was born in Pittsylvania Co, as was Owen Adkins. Can you help me with sourcing this information? I have ideas, but no proof. Thanks.

Hello Priscilla,

You have more or less the same information that I found or currently have. From family oral history, I have always understood that the WILLMORE line migrated to the U.S. before the Revolution from the British Isles. They apparently settled in VA first and then made their way to Kentucky, TN and eventually IL. I have not made any research forays into the British Isles connection. The VA stopover was very common for emigrants coming from the British Isles during this early time frame. I am also aware of indentured WILLMOREs servants in VA during this time frame as well, but I have not connected them to our line.....YET! I think that the early WILLMORE emigrants were all connected but I have no proof. Several other surnames that connect later in history to the WILLMORE family, marriages etc. are also present during the pre-Revolution period in VA and later show up in IL as well.... cousins perhaps?

I have never made a connection with George, in Franklin CO, IL but I continue to collect information on him/them, on the 'if-come' that they do connect. This group migrated from IN to IL prior to the Civil War and George served in the war, as did other WILLMOREs. I believe that this group took the northern route into Ohio and Indiana before settling in Franklin CO. Intuitively, I believe we are connected, but I have not spent much time trying to go backwards with this WILLMORE line.

Let me know if you find anything new!
Cousin Kay
Good Morning!

Minnie died in 1979 about 10 days after her 81st birthday. Charlie Wilson was her husband, up until the time he got shot in the back. I have heard some really interesting stories concerning that! I didn't realize that Charlie and Claude were brothers. You learn something new everyday. :) After Charlie was gone, Minnie married Albert Johnson who is my grandfather. He was born in Arizona in the 1880's and disappeared somewhere between Livingston Montana and Chicago Illinois in abt. 1930. His death and/or whereabouts before his death remains a mystery. I think Ida and Granny Adkins were living in Chicago at that time, along with Dave Adkins, Ida's brother.

Viola was the oldest. She lived for a long time near Bozeman, Montana. I was pretty young when she died. I think the youngest was Gloria Almeda. She went by Almeda. She was married to Bill Leathers and they lived south of Livingston.

Unfortunately I was not at the reunion. I haven't kept up with my Montana relatives very well since i moved to Michigan in 1993. My mom, Thelma Potter, might have been there. She became interested in family history later in her life. She passed away on May 4, 2009 at the age of 82.

Your Mom, Thelma was our Dad's (Claude Robert Hansen) first cousin and we met her in Livingston about 2003 or so at our great aunt Almed and her husband Roy's house. I never met your grandmother Minnie, but have heard a few stories as she and my grandmother,Ida Adkins were sisters.
I have a few of them. I know Minnie died quite young right? Was she the one whose husband was shot in the back as a policeman in Livingston. If so, Ida, her sister (my grandmother), was married to his brother Claude Wilson. Was his name Charlie Wilson? So your parent would be double cousins with my dad.
I remember meeting Viola. I think she was the oldest. We went to the Adkins reunion in 2005 in Livingston. Where you there?

John Adkins born about 1845 in Virginia, died 1923

Looking for family of the above. He married Thursa Murray about 1888. Had 6 known children - James, Siler/Siles, Sarah, Albert, Grace, and Richard. He and Thursa, and the older 3 children, lived in Pine Mountain and South America, KY in 1900; then he was in Claiborne county, TN in 1910, and Barkers Ridge, WV in 1920. Albert is my ex-husband's father. Albert is missing in 1920 and 1930. Have not found anything on John's parents, siblings, or whereabouts prior to 1900. Any information on this family would be appreciated. Thank you.

Jonah Adkins Kentucky > West Virginia

I am trying to locate the parents of a Jonah "Joe" Adkins.
Here's what I do know:

Jonah was born March 06,1908 ( most likely in Kentucky) Probably Magoffin or Floyd.

He had two siblings I'm aware of Fanny or Fannie who married a Workman. and John Bill.

On April 21, 1932 Jonah married Bertha Isaac in Paddle Creek, Wayne County West Virginia. In 1936 they lived in Pritchard West Virginia through 1939 in 1942 they had a son in Neal West Virginia. About 1945 they moved to Mansfield, Ohio They are both deceased and buried in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Jonah and Bertha had sons Charles, John Bill, Beecher, and Danny.

Any link to Jonahs ancestors, would be a great,I'd appreciate the help!

Carolyn
