Dave Adkins - born around 1850 in TN?

jemdt  (View posts) Posted: 10 Nov 1999 6:40PM GMT
I am looking for the parents of my great-grandfather Dave (David?) Adkins, who was probably born in 1850, possibly in Tennessee or Kentucky. His wife's name was Polly. They had several children including my grandfather - William Jacob Adkins who was
born April 10, 1885 in Pickett County, TN.
Dave and Polly also had at least two more sons named George and Tom and probably at
least two daughters whose names I do not
know.

Adkins Family/Tenn

Do you have any other family member names in Tenn? I'm also searching for family members and siblings. I've gone as far back as 1844 in Tenn. My Grandmother was Sebastine Adkins, born 1880 in Hebbertsburg, Tenn. Her parents were Benjamin F. Adkins and Susane (or Susan) Farmer. Benjamin F. Adkins was born in 1844 in Tenn. His parents were Silas Adkins and Annie Cook.
E-mail me at Kena1@home.com if you have additional info. Thanks !!!

I will look in the Pike Co census for your line.. but do you know who they married... There are a lot of Davids... but have not seen your ELSA, or at least this spelling...lots of Elisha's. Also it would help us if you knew any sibling of either..

Elza Adkins married Louisa Adkins(Great grandparents),her name was Adkins before she married Elza. I have a picture of Dave Adkins (my grandfather) with a brother but I haven't found out his name yet. Dave Adkins married Elizabeth Louise Puckett on 14 Aug 1913. She was from Dickenson County VA. I'm visiting their graves this weekend.

This may be of interest!

My grandfather was William Jacob Adkins (born 10 APR 1885 in Pickett Co., TN
and died 20 JUN 1926 in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY). I have a copy of my
grandfather's marriage certificate (m. 15 FEB 1917) from Wayne Co., KY which
states his parents were Dave and Polly Adkins.

The Kentucky Death Index shows a Dave Adkins who died 01 SEP 1940 in
Wayne County, KY at the age of 86, which would mean that he was born about
1854. I am not sure that this was my great-grandfather because my Dad
(David C. Adkins) thought that his grandfather was born in 1850 and died in 1942
when my Dad was serving overseas in World War II, and he thought that his
grandfather lived to be in his nineties. But since the dates are close, and the
location is correct, and my Dad is not positive, I feel that these dates may be correct.

My Dad's family moved to Illinois when he was only eight, but he visited his
grandfather in May of 1940 before my Dad went into the army. In 1940, he
remembers that his grandfather was living with one of his daughters in Wayne Co., KY
and that his grandmother, Polly, had died sometime previously. The Kentucky Death
Index also shows a Mary A. Adkins who died 05 SEP 1923 in Wayne Co., KY
at the age of 62, which would mean she was born about 1861. I figure that this could
possibly be my great-grandmother "Polly".

I also asked my Dad for the names of any Aunts or Uncles that he could remember.
He knows that he had an Aunt Fannie who married a Sam Eaton. I found records for
a Fannie J. Adkins Eaton who was born about 1889 and died 28 OCT 1965 in
Wayne Co., KY, and for a Sam Eaton who was born 29 JUN 1889 and died MAR 1973
in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY. He also remembers a Crockett Adkins, an Uncle Tom,
and an Uncle George. I found a record for a David Crockett Adkins who was born
22 NOV 1882 and died 13 JUN 1925 in Wayne Co., KY. I found a Tom K. Adkins
who was born 02 JAN 1895 and died 08 FEB 1968 in Wayne Co., KY. and a George
Adkins who was born ABT 1876 and died 25 MAR 1955 in Pulaski Co., KY, but he
lived in Wayne Co., KY. These may all have been children of Dave and Polly, but I
have no proof. My Dad thought there were other names of Aunts and Uncles
that he could not remember.

Don,

Unfortunately I have very little past information on the Adkins, most of which I listed in my previous message. I am still stuck at Fannie's parents Dave and Polly Adkins and am unable to travel to Wayne County, Kentucky to do any further research at this time.

My e-mail address is Frisco92@aol.com.
If you send me your e-mail address, I will allow you access to the MYFAMILY.COM site I have made which has my Adkins family tree.

Are the dates below correct for your great-grandparents?
Fannie J. Adkins Eaton born about 1889 and
died 28 OCT 1965 in Wayne Co., KY.
Sam Eaton who was born 29 JUN 1889 and
died MAR 1973 in Monticello, Wayne Co., KY.

Do you have any other information on them?

I suspect that when my Dad visited his grandfather Dave in 1940, that he may have
been living with Fannie and Sam since my Dad remembers his Aunt Fannie. My dad did say that Dave Adkins was suppose to have owned a large amount of land, so it may be able to trace them from land records.

I will be glad to share any future information I find on the Adkins family.
I have a feeling it will be hard to find documents to trace Dave and Polly Adkins.
I know that they were living in Pickett County, TN (which borders Wayne Co., KY) at the time of my grandparents wedding in 1915. I do not know where they were married or what state they were born in, nor do I know Polly's maiden name or if Polly was a nickname.

This is an old post but I'm hoping you are still around VCrouse ! My great grandpa was John M Adkins, son of Wilson and Elizabeth Stacia Hill Adkins. The last I found of him was in the 1900 Dickenson county census living with wife Nancy with daughter Martha Cordelia Adkins (Carroll) in Clintwood. Would your Adkins by chance be buried in the Adkins cemetery on Caney Ridge, if so do you remember seeing a John Adkins buried after 1900 but before 1910 ?
