Alexander ADAIR of Kilbright in Co. Down, Gent,
ob. int. Adm. 8 Nov 1720,(wife ?) Maria, son James.

County Down, N. Ireland,
Townland : Kilbright, Acres : 232
Barony : Ards Lower, Civil Parish : Donagadee (Donaghadee)
...................
The Viscount's son, Sir James Montgomery, living at Rosemount, Greyabbey, purchased the Quintin Estate from Dualtaigh Smith, a dependent of the SAVAGE family, and with his son, William Montgomery made great addition to the original pile. This was the first reconstruction of the castle and was probably carried out before 1659.

The Montgomery's sold the castle to George ROSS who lived at Kearney. (Carney / Carney Hill). George Ross never lived in the Castle and therefore it was allowed to become a nearly ruined structure.

George Ross held townlands under the Hamilton's at Portavo near DONAGHADEE and also at Rostrevor / Rosstrevor.
(Adairs may have leased properties from the Rostrevor estate ?).

In 1668 "Kearney mill" was leased by Hugh Savage to Robert Ross and in 1699 by Patrick Savage to George Ross.

Maj. Gen. Robert Ross (1766-1814) was 2nd son of Major David Ross of Carrickbawn or Rostrevor House, Co Down, N. Ireland.

Refer Burkes "Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland", part 2, (1863) p.1297 for "Ross of Rosstrevor" co. Down.

OOPS.
Maj. General Robert Ross, "the incendiary of Washington"
was educated in Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland,
during the Provostship of Hutchinson who frequently made use of the assistance of his son's tutor, Rev.Dr. William ADAIR, master of a school in Fermoy, co. Cork. Wm Adair m. Miss Malcolm ?

On 16 Aug 1814 reinforcements to the British fleet under Admiral Cochrane arrived in Chesapeak bay and were soon joined by Admiral Malcolm. Accompanying these were several thousand land troops, under one of Wellington's most active (spy) officers, General Ross who was killed (at Fort McHenry ?) near Baltimore, 13 Sep 1814.

Francis Scott Key, after observing the unsuccessful British bombardment of Fort McHenry, was inspired to compose the verses of "The Star Spangled Banner".

Any corrections welcome, and any information on
Alexander Adair of Kilbright, co. Down. Thank you.

Hello,

I have this book! My mother was an Adair before she married my father. My mother's father was William Ernest Adair and he was from Laurens, County SC. I know bits and pieces about the Adair side. I know that my mother's father had many brothers and some never married.
My name is Beth Keaton. I would love to share information. Both my parents have passed away. I never knew any of my grandparents either. I did meet several members of the Adair side of the family in 1983. I also have the coat of arms for the Adair family.
