Claiborn Acuff

Randy Jones  (View posts) Posted: 7 Jan 2000 10:48PM GMT
Hi LuAnn,
We are related-just depends on the Claiborn and Benjamin info how. Here is how my line goes (subject to change)-
Me
James Harrison Jones (my Father)
James William Jones (my Grandfather)
Nancy Matilda Acuff Jones (my great Grandmother)
Silas S (Mike) Acuff (my GG Grandfather)
Nicholas Acuff (my GGG Grandfather)
John Acuff (my GGGG Grandfather and Father of your Benjamin)
John Acuff (My GGGGG Grandfather)
Something is probably wrong with the line that goes down to you in my tree. When I have more time will have to see if I can make thing fit with the specific info that you gave to me. Another Acuff relative is finding information that makes it look like we are descended from Cain Acuff rather than his brother John. If you want to keep in touch and share information, let's use our own e-mail addresses. Mine is plantman@portland.quik.com
or
plantfanatic@hotmail.com
My wife, son and I live near Portland, Oregon.

Gertrude May Acuff

My maternal grandmother, who died in 1959 at age 86, was Gertrude May Acuff (married name McKay). she had a brother, Horatio, and other siblings whose names I do not know. She mentioned the singer, Roy Acuff, as being a relative. We never contacted him, unfortunately. She was born, I believe, in the knoxville, TN area. She also had a niece, Pauline Acuff, who lived in Danville, VA. Any information would be appreciated.

Do you have any information on Sarah (Sallie) Acuff who married Joel Dotson/Dodson in 1812 in Grainger Co.? I noticed you had her born in 1813.
There is a Joel Donelson who married a Sarah Acuff in Grainger in 1812. I think this is Joel Dotson.
Sarah's brother, Charles M. Acuff, signed on the marriage bond for my gg-grandparents, John and Martha Grady Dotson, when they married in Grainger Co. in 1843.
Please contact me if you have any info on this.

What a wonderful list you posted! BUT, unfortunately the two sisters above didn't appear. They married two Hall brothers: John, Jr. and William. Would you possibly have any information on them even if they don't fit into your family?

John Acuff Sr.

I am new to genealogy, so haven't found good source materials yet. I have acquired a pretty good family tree for my maternal side of the family from a Great-Uncle.

We appear to be related through the early generations of the Acuff family. We branch off with John Acuff Jr.'s son Charles. Apparently, Reece Ingram was his first wife. My family line stems from his second wife, Amanda Jane Neil.

What I am wondering is where you got your documentation for John Acuff Sr. My Great-Uncle didn't have birth or death dates or the name of his wife. Thank you so much for adding this information to our tree! I do wish I could give him the documentation along with the information.

Hi Malinda,
I am relatively new at all of this also. have been working on it for a little over a year. The amount of information I've collected form the internet, CD's and relatives has been staggering. From what I can tell, if I'm looking at the same John jr as you, his Charles is different from the one you refer to. In any case, the older John Acuff info came from the Mormon (LDS) website. Are you using a genealogy program to record your information? If so, would be glad to send you a GEDCOM file of what I have on the Acuffs. If you are interested, e-mail me at:

plantman@portland.quik.com
or
plantfanatic@hotmail.com

Hi Dianne,
I do not have info on the Dotsons, but it does look like this Sallie is in my tree. She had a brother named Charles. There have been a lot of inquiries coming in recently about the outline that I posted several months ago, so made a GEDCOM file of the Acuff line in my genealogy. If you would like me to send it to you, contact me at:

plantman@portland.quik.com

Would appreciate you letting me know of any corrections or additions you may have.
If you are interested, Roy Acuff is in the gedcom. He is under Roy Claxton Acuff. Seems to be a lot of interest in how he ties in to the Acuff line.
Best of luck in your search.
Randy Jones

PS-Seems like I have had inquiries by others about the Dotsons. If you want me to, will look for the old messages.

Hi Randy, and thanks for the info. No, I haven't got a family tree program yet. I am looking into Family Tree Maker 6.0 and comparing it with other less expensive programs. Which one do you use? If and when I DO get the program, I'l really like that file and will e-mail you for it at that time, if it's OK with you.

Thanks again.

Hi Malinda,
I use the family tree maker. Like it pretty well, but have no basis for comparison. Not sure what version I am on now. Just bought the update and they already are advertising another. A lot of the cost of their programs are the info CD's which I have found to be of limited value. Most of the information on those disks is free somewhere on the internet or will be soon. Everytime you turn around they are wanting to sell you a $20-$100 CD or set of CD's so you can see what may be a single useless piece of info on what may be one of your ancestors. I saw just the standard programs for sale last Christmas for $19.99 to $29.99 without all of the CD's. That is what I would recommend if you can find it. My brother has been unsucessful finding one without all of the CD's...Would be glad to send you what I have any time it will work for you. My e-mail addresses are:
plantman@portland.quik.com
and
plantfanatic@hotmail.com
In the meantime, good luck in your search!
