Hi Sherry,

Two leads for you: first it may be worth having a look at the Absalom Gendex that is available on the net.

The URL is http://www.croucherconsult.co.uk/genealogy/Absalom/Gendex.ht...

There is NO mention of a Sarah E Absalom.

Secondly I wrote an article that was published in the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society's Spring 2012 issue.

You have probably found already that although Absalom is a minority family name (not very populous) they are spread out around the world being a family of mariners. Another problem is the variety of spellings of the name.

Good luck

John Absalom was a Master Mariner, captain of the "Eglantine", who drowned near Havanna Cuba in 1860 when he fell from the American ship "Gern". For more details see Northumberland and Durham Family History Society Journal vol 37 No. 1. Does anyone have more information on the "Gern"?

Hi, I came across your message while searching for info. My grandmother was an Absalom. I think you have it wrong regarding Catherine Mayo and William Wicks. It is the same Catherine Mayo who married Wicks in about 1834 and then hooked up with John Absalom in 1838. They then had John A Absalom who is my great great grandfather. It wasnt the daughter of Catherine and Wicks who then married Absalom. I am confusing myself now... I would love any other info you have. I was trying to find when everyone came to Australia and you helped me heaps with Catherine Mayo. She came with her two sisters on the Bussarah Merchant. I didnt know all that. Thanks Narelle

He was also the best man at my grandfathers marriage in 1901, so he is in the wedding photo of that event.

If you are still interested, write to me - I too would like to know more about them.

Best wishes

David Allen

Re: John Absalom Absalom

Hi distant cousin,
I stumbled across your old query. To put you in the picture of how we are related - your great grandfather Henry E. Absalom's mother Mary Ann Absalom (nee O'Connor), was my great grandmother (Elizabeth Loveday)'s half sister.
Elizabeth Loveday was born in 1841 in Hobart, Tasmania. Her mother was Emily. I think Emily's maiden name was Howard. When she married John O'Connor is not known by me, but she had two children by him - John O'Connor & Mary Ann O'Connor. I have never been able to find their father (John O'Connor's death), but died he must have, because when the children would have been, I think, 2 & 4 years respectively, their mother, Emily married a second time just before Elizabeth was born in Hobart. Emily married Charles Loveday - a man who I have found out to be an ex-convict and quite a scoundrel. Emily died in Sydney in 1852, so some time between 1842 and 1852 the whole family had moved from Hobart to Sydney. I have never been able to find Charles Loveday's death.

When I was very young I used to have contact with the relatives of Sarah Elizabeth Absalom, who married George Thomas Sayers in 1905. I didn't know them, but their two daughters, Mary Ann Sayers & Sarah King. Mary Ann Sayers never married and lived at Mascot in her parents old house. Her married sister lived close by in Sutherland Street. Sarah King only had one daugher - Elizabeth who does not have children of her own.

When I had visited Sarah King she showed me some very old writing to do with her relatives.

There were three Mayo sisters who came from London as bond girls. They had come from the St. George Stepney area. One of them, Catherine Mayo, was working for a man called Charles Moore, located at his work premises in Sydney. Charles Moore had to give his permission for Catherine Mayo to marry as her husband-to-be, William Wicks, also worked for Charles Moore, and he was a convict, therefore they needed permission to marry. So it is the descendent of this union (a girl) who ended up marrying John Absalom.

The story goes that at the time of their son being baptised, the minister asked the parents the child's name. They replied "Absalom", to which the minister baptised the child 'Absalom Absalom", when it should have been John Absalom.

I am sure through Sydney Archives you can do your research further about William Wicks.

I hope this is of some help to you. Equally, if you know further about John & Mary Ann O'Connor, especially before they married, it would be great to hear from you.

Regards,

Debbie C.

John was g grandson of the James Absalom who was born in 1738. His son, also John born 1848 was also a sea captain. Both sailed from northern ports.

Seeking information on maiden name of Mary, what became of their children. They are listed with children's baptisms in the late 1600's and early 1700's of Abingdon Parish in Gloucester Co. Virginia. There are many Absaloms listed during this time period: John, William, Chilon(sp?), appears some are Juniors and Seniors.

Am wondering the connection of this group to the Sawyer family of the same area in Tidewater.

I am looking for any information about my grandfather 's history.
He died in Manchester aged 80 in 1989. He was married to his second wife, Kathleen, my grandmother, and had
children KAthleen, James, Dorothy, Steven, and Geoffrey. I believe,he had a
daughter Catherine from his first marriage. I only knew of two of
his sisters Louie and Elsie.
According to my grandfather his family were originally PASCOES possibly from France, and one
of his ancestors fought on the side of the French against Nelson, apparantly killing
the sniper who shot Nelson. Whether there is any truth in this I am not sure, however, I do know his family settled in Cornwall and moved up North to the docks.
I'd be grateful if anyone could shed any light on my grandfather's past and email me at Hamlij@cf.ac.uk.
Hello,

I was very interested to read your posting. Susanna Absalom (nee Lowther) is my gt gt grandmother. The family lived in West Cramlington. John Henry Absalom emigrated to Australia in 1850's where he settled and raised a family. He died in 1899 in NSW, but left descendants in Victoria. David and Matthew mentioned in your posting were his brothers.

My gt grandfather William Lowther Absalom also emigrated, with Matthew, and their families, to New Zealand in 1883. They stopped off in Melbourne en route to NZ.

I would be interested in making contact with you, and finding out where your connection with the Absalom family fits in to the Tree.

I look forward to your reply.

I have two letters from west cramlington, northumberland written by susanna (lowther) absalom, david & (wife)jane(gregory), and matthew dated 1870 and 1879 to possibly john henry absalom in australia.

I have had these letters for about twenty years and were past on by my father's aunt all of victoria (father's aunt did family research in @1950s-80s).

My query is firstly to absalom descendents in victoria and nsw how this connects to my own family (no direct ancestors with the surname absalom) and if there isn't one to return these letters to their rightful owners.

Hi Dean,

We have already been in contact. I have not been able to get much further in researching the Absalom ships. I hope to get up to Blyth Northumberland sometime this year and after that should have more.nSo far I have not information about David (1800-1870). Who did he marry etc.?

I am trying to find if there are any other children of Henry Absalom (b1790 Wandsworth). I have identified William Absalom (b1837) and his brother Henry (b1827). Henry and his sons owned and operated the floating baths that wer quite famous in Southend around 1880-1910.

Hi Rhoda!
nice to see you on here. I'm surprised that there is so much already entered by other people on my Absalom family tree. Do you know who >callingpenny< is??

I recently found two John Absaloms arriving in Australia in 1891 ..one was 23, the other 50 years old. I have some more info on my profile. I think the young one is our man .. the other a relative.

All the best,
Bill

As I have told you before, your information has proved most useful to me. I have however still not been able to dig up much information about the maritime activities of Robert Absalom b. 1794 and his son-in-law William Wilson b. 1823 who married Robert's daughter Elizabeth. They had a ship and traded between Northumberland (probably Blyth) and Spain and that it was wrecked in the Bay of Biscay. I have found reference to William Wilson's Mariner's certificate but nothing much on Robert Absalom apart from the census info that he was a mariner.

There is a lot of Absalom information on the internet at
http://www.croucherconsult.co.uk/genealogy/Absalom/Gendex.ht...

I am a descendant of Robert Absolam (1794- c 1872) from Blyth Northumberland England and am interested in Absolams after his grand children. In particular I am interested in the possibility that most of the Absolams left for Australia towards the end of the 1900s.

Spelling Absolon Absolam Absalom very variable. Why? Is it because it is unusual. There appear to be no Absaloms left in Blyth or Newcastle judging by phone books.

What info can you share.

Best regards,
Chris
Hello
I dont have any information on your Joseph Absolon I am afraid Timothy.

Can I suggest you go to the Free BMD site - scroll down BELOW the Ancestry .com advert till you reach the Search button and put your info in there.

You may well find something about him. It has a lot of information. If it isnt in there at the moment it may come up in a few months time when more people have transcribed the records onto the computers.
Dont give up.

I found my Timothy eventually - he called himself James for most of his life so I struggled to find him.
My Timothy was born in 1851 and the last name is definitely Absalom. Good luck
Paula

John Absalom Absalom

I am currently trying to find some information in relation to my mothers family. My great great grandfather was a man by the name of John Absalom Absalom. John married Mary Ann O'Connor on the 14th September 1858 in St Phillips, Sydney Australia. Their son Henry Edmund Absalom maried Julia Jess on the 3rd of November 1894 in Sydney..Any information relating to the Absaloms would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Sam
To Ann: Margaret ABSALOM (1798-1853) who married William BARRASS (1796-1865) was a relation (aunt?) of the ABSALOM family of Cramlington, Northumberland. Three or four of their children: William, Elizabeth (TWEEDIE), John and Robert BARRASS emigrated to Australia in 1858. I have quite a bit of information on both families.
Elizabeth HUDSON married James (aka Thomas) ABSALOM 23 May 1787 at Earsdon.
Interested to know more details about your grandfather Thomas BARRASS - date of birth, place etc.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your reply. I am wondering if we have the same William BARRASS. Born 26 October 1827 - Died 8 September 1907. He married Isabella JOHNSTON (1837-1917). They had 8 children but cannot locate a John BARRASS. Perhaps if you let me have your email address I can send you the Family Tree and you can check all the names/dates shown on it. If there is a connection with William & Margaret (nee ABSALOM) BARRASS then we are on the right track. Only need to sort out the generations!
