The tried-and-true method for Swiss research prior to 1875 (after that date, most vital records are closed to the public, due to very strict Swiss privacy laws and an entrenched bureaucracy) is first to search very thoroughly where your Swiss ancestors lived after they emigrated. The goal of this first step is to find three facts: (1) full names, (2) exact dates of birth or names of other relatives, and (3) the name of the town where the family lived in Switzerland.

Once you have these three facts, the next step is to check the catalogue of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City (the catalogue is on the FamilySearch.org web site) to see if they have the church records for your ancestral village on microfilm. In this case, you are in luck, the church records from Hüttlingen 1655-1875 have been microfilmed. You can get the microfilms through your local LDS Family History Center (small fee to have them sent from Salt Lake City to the Family History Center -- these days, most people will have to place the order on-line, through the FamilySearch.org web site). The records from this area will be in German, so the script may be difficult at first, but the church records in Switzerland are normally excellent and informative. They can be counted on to give the town of origin of almost everyone. It's possible that records for Hüttlingen before 1655 will be found in some adjacent parish, because parish boundaries have changed over the centuries.

If you decide to take the more expensive route, you can hire a researcher or travel to Switzerland yourself. The originals of these church records will likely be at the cantonal archives or a similar repository. There will probably be other records in the town hall, and someone may even remember your branch of the family that left Hüttlingen.

Good luck with your research!

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

At the moment, I cannot find my source for this information, but maybe it will help. Your information was helpful to me. Thank you!

I'm searching for Swiss ancestors of the Hagenbucher family. We know Arnold Hagenbucher was born in Hegi, Bern, Switzerland in abt 1962. I believe he had an older brother named K. Joseph Hagenbuechli, born in abt 1849, in Hernden, Thurgau Switzerland. I'd like to confirm that K Joseph Hagenbuechli was Arnold's brother.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

While the alphabet can be difficult, the church records usually follow a relatively consistent format. The records that are in German tend to be extremely concise, often in columns. Typically the baptisms just show the date, the given name, the names of the parents, and the names of the godparents. With a little patience, it can be done!

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

Your ancestors learned German, and so can you, at least enough to read the names and dates in the church records.

Altnau has both a Catholic and a Protestant church. The church records of both, from the earliest records in the 17th Century up to about 1875, are available on microfilm through your local LDS Family History Center for a very small rental fee. This is by far the easiest and least expensive way to do the research. If you visited the archives of the canton, you would use the same microfilms!

John McCoy
(RealMac@aol.com)

Hi Julia. I've recently gotten more information on my Hugentobler ancestor. I found it in the Switzerland databases at:
http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/s/collection/list

In the marriages section, I was able to determine that my Maria Elisabetha Hugentobler who married Johann Weber, was born 26 April 1848. They married at Katholisch, Berg Tg, Thurgau, Switzerland on 26 April 1875. Her parents are listed as Joseph Hugentobler and Maria Elisabetha Buerke or Burki.

You may want to check out that database to see if you can find your folks. Let me know what you find. Do keep in mind that the records indicate whether the family was Catholic or not and you can use this somewhat to separate out families with similar names as your own.

Gachnag is a small town, and the Evangelisch (Protestant) church dates back to the 12th or 13th century. I found the minister to be very helpful when I wrote for records, and I assume he's still there. We later visited the church, and he took us on a tour of it, even into the bell tower.

Write to: Evangelisch Pfarramt
8547 Gachnang
Switzerland

For civil records try the same address, but substitute the word Zivilstandsamt in the first line.

The minister speaks English, but for the civil records, keep your English simple and and sentences short and to the point. Include a International Reply Coupon for both places, which will pay for their return postage to you. These are available at the post office. Be sure that they stamp it, or it is useless. Good luck in your search.

Im new to researching my Swiss ancesters. What types of records exist for Evangelisch, Gachnang, Thurgau, Switzerland (census, tax, land, court, etc.) before 1880? What does Evangelisch mean? What resources are available, who to contact, and how to research my ancesters from this area?

Rudolph BACHMANN born (02 or 09) Jun 1841 Switzerland Parish records show he was christened 13 Jun 1841 Evangelisch, Gachnang, Thurgau, Switzerland and that he also married there 08 Nov 1875 Thekla BUCHLE, the daughter of Ludwig BUCHLE. Thekla was born 19 JUL 1849 in Baden which became a part of Germany.

Gachnang is in northeast Switzerland in Canton Thurgau near the border of Canton ZURICH. (USA census records show Rudolph was born in Zurich, Switzerland).

They immigrated to the USA 1875. Family tradition is that they came through the Port of Galveston (though immigratiion records there are incomplete).

Does anyone know how to find records from Dießenhofen? My husbands great grandfather was supposed to have been born there in 1857. His name was John (or Johann or Johannes) Keller. His siblings were Jacob, Daniel, Teopheld, Theodore, Manual, August, Mina, and Lizette. Family lore states that the fathers for several generations were all John Kellers. Our John Keller married Maria Schmid from Germany and emigrated to Washington state and died in Kalama in 1894.
Thank you!
Dani Keller

Can anyone relate to a Killian WEBER? He emigrated from Switzerland to the U.S. in 1876 and left us absolutely no information about his family members or where in Switzerland he came from. All we know is that he was Catholic and spoke German and married Barbara GULER. I see there are many WEBERs in Thurgau, and I am hoping someone will claim Killian WEBER. Thank you for any clues.

Helen,
I have the Allenpach, Rutershuserin and Munz names in my file but nothing matching your info. Have you checked with the mormon site, familysearch.com? Try this and put you names in and see what matches come back. You could also write to the area in which these families came from in Switzerland. Check with your library and see if they do not have a reference book that gives addresses to Archives all over the world or check on the internet.
It would not surprise me if somewhere our families do not tie in with each other.
Let me know how it goes and I will check some area's my self. Good Luck,
Darlene
