Dear Susan:

Thanks for your note, and for researching the names of the children. I am sorry that I have not gotten back to you yet on doing more Monasterio research. It is still my intention to do so.

Yes, all of these children (including Francisco) are Leopoldo's, and all (except for Amalia) died of diptheria. Amalia is my great grandmother, who benefited from all the attention of being the lone survivor.

Leopoldo made his fortune growing chickpeas in Fuentesauco. Apparently, he trusted his sister to continue to manage his land holdings there, but she robbed him blind, causing him such grief that he died soon after discovering the awful truth.

I have been trying to locate his origins but have so far come up empty handed. Any ideas?

Regards,

Manuel

The next step would be to find a good gazeteer (hmmm...I really need one at home!) and check to see if there are records for him in a Parish near Fuentesauco.

Another option is to write a letter of inquiry to the
church in Spain and see if they would help, but that is
not always fruitful.

Neither of these options is going to be a "quick fix," but be patient and persistent and it will probably pay off for you. I just had a couple extra minutes at the Library last evening, and saw your posting and wanted to try to help. I thought it would be fun to just "find it" and post it for you here, but alas, nothing in the two places I could check.

Do not worry that you haven't gotten back as a "client"
It's nice that you continue to let others know that I am here and willing to put my time into helping them. Wish my husband were independently wealthy and I could just do this for free all of the time.

Keep in touch,
Susan

Hi Manuel -
Leopoldo has five children in Bilbao area. Four of them christened in the parish of San Vicente Martir:
Angela born 1880
Maria del Carmen Epifania 1882
Amalia born 1883
Benita Francisca Josefa born 1886

He may also have a son,
Francisco born 1878
in another parish, but no parents listed on the summary
so I can be sure he belongs to Leopoldo.

These records are too late to be retrieved from the microfilms. So you will have to decide whether you prefer
to order one from the AHEB-BEHA (if you haven't already)
I hear it is a bit "pricey" or if you'd like to contact the
civil registration office in Bilbao.

I tried to check Fuentesauco, Zamora. The only microfilm of a Fuentesauco is out of Segovia. Nothing there. Nothing just generally in Zamora on film #1543000.

Let me know if you don't have the rest of the information
on those children. I'll be happy to send it to you when I'm on my home computer.

Susan

I am looking for any relatives of my great grandfather Felix Alonso. He immigrated to the United States around 1915. I believe he was born in Pozo de la Sal, Burgos, Spain. I don't really know anything about his family yet. I believe he had a relative (uncle) in California at the same time he lived in California. The uncles name was Jose Arriaga Alonso. It is also possible that Felix was born in Portugal. We really just do not know. Felix was born on December 4, 1889. It is possible that his father's name (in Spain or Portugal) was Francisco Alonso or Mateo Alonso. I think Felix's mothers name was Scholastica Castillo.

Any help would be so great! Thanks.

I have run into the title "Cde de...." (i.e. Cde de Castile) many times in some recent research. Can anyone tell me what the Cde stands for? I'm assuming it's some kind of rank/title. Thanks in advance!
Tracy

Re: BORREGO’s and ACOSTA’s Genealogy,
Spain, Cuba, and USA. email: soflam2003@yahoo.com

Any information would be greatly appreciated, research and / or comments. I’m doing this for my daughter Isabella Adelaida Borrego, she is very special to me.

My maternal great grandmother is ANA ACOSTA RAMON, ( decd of Canary islands ) two of her daughters are America Acosta and ADELAIDA ACOSTA - BORREGO, my grandmother. She last lived in San Antonio de Los Banos, Cuba. I recall conversation with her, where she stated that her mother was from Santa Cruz de La Palma, Canary Islands. They also owned a grocery store called “El Brillante” in Cuba. My grandfather FELIX BORREGO worked at one of the Centrales as a “Maestro Azucar” in the “Provincia de Matanzas”. We lived in San Antonio de Los Banos, and have relatives ( Borrego’s and Acosta’s ) in Santiago de las Vegas and Guira de Melena both in La Havana province.

Statistical migratory patterns for the Borrego’s seems to suggest the following cities; Madrid-Alcalá , Valladolid, Leon, Gijon, Santa Cruz de La Palma-Canary Islands, Cuba - ( San Antonio de Los Banos, Santiago de las Vegas and Guira de Melena ), and the United States ( Florida, Louisiana and California.) We left Cuba from Jose Marti National Airport in 1968. Suggestions on primary and /or secondary sources would be great, i.e. ships / airline - logs manifest, government sources, church records. Thank you, in advance for your response.

Regards,
Santos Alberto Borrego

Ariel Blondet

Hello! I have married into a Castile Family. I have been trying to locate and trace some of their family ancestry. Most of these people did not stay in one place for very long and I can't seem to find even the closest relatives, (even the ones recently deceased) The story is that my husbands gt gt grandpa, Tom Castile actually lived in Spain, but was packing banana crates into a ship (time of horse--not buggy) and slipped himself into one to get to America! Not sure if this is a accurate description, or just fancy. But I can't locate him on Passenger lists, but then again, I'm not good at finding that type of info. Anyway, here is the family history:
Michael Castile (my husband)
Tommy Castile (my father in law) living
Tommy's father: Bernard Whitson Castile b. 1916 living
Leman Whitson Castile b. 1895
Tom (maybe Thomas) Castile (b. 1853 ?)
