1. Does anyone know what "gd" after a father's name means in marriage records? 2. Does anyone know what the abbreviation that looks like an elegant "N" in front of woman's name means? No first name is given.

Baptism, Marriage and death records for Mallorca are available at the Obispo of Palma near the Cathedral. I have many of these records from the towns of Soller and Fornalutx. For other parrishes/towns you will need to visit the Obispo yourself or hire a local genealogist (of which there are excellent ones).

I have since answered my own questions: "gd" is my incorrect reading of "go." It basically means the individual has passed away. "N" seems to be equivalent to "Unknown."

Thank you for your reply. When you say hire a local genealogist-how do I find one in Selva? The records you have did you have dates and than you wrote to the church. My problem is I have no dates.

My father's family comes from the town of Soller. It has the advantage of being difficult to visit or leave and therefore searching can be successful without trying all the parishes of the island. I had an idea before hand what the names of certain ancestors were before I started. I was able to determine dates by deduction. But, if your ancestors come from, for example Palma, then searching becomes very difficult. Palma is a large city with many parrishes. Is your family from Soller? I may be able to help you if they are. My genealogist on the Island was ill so I did most of my own research (four trips - all enjoyable) to the island. She may be interested now in getting a new client. She's very good and while it seems expensive, for the work they do, it's very reasonable. She doesn't speak english however, but I assume you know castilian.

Hi David,

I am doing resarch on the name Casasnovas from Soller, Mallorca. He lived in Puerto Rico from 1899-1925? Then my grandmother says he left for Spain. Can you tell me how I can do research in Spain. I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Linda from NY

Send me your ancestor's names thru this post or thru my alternate e-mail address Cass34@mail.com and I'll see if I have any information for you.

Soller records are located in Palma at the Bishopry (Obispo) and are available to foreigners.
