Hello all,
Hope all is well!

Interesting post here. My name is Jason Pereira, living in California, US. These names like Antonio, Joseph, Edmond, Rovine, Maria, Vincent - are still in our family here in US and American Samoa! My father's name is Joseph, born in 1949. His father's name was Edmond, born in Tokelau I believe, and passed away in early 1960's...

I'm going to Portugal later this month, and would love to visit the area/town that our family may have came from. Any info would be great!

Dear Jose,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a beautiful story. I am also researching my husband’s family who immigrated from Catalan, Spain to Mindoro, Phil. From what I can gather from the verbal history JOSE DURAN married JULIANA BUISON (Unsure of the spelling of her name) before 1911 in Mindoro. Juliana died in 1915.

I do not know for certain what generation they came over from Spain but the few photos that survived WWII show traditional Catalan dress for their daughter SALUD DURAN in about 1918. I have researched the name BUISON and I suspect it may be Basque.

In 1934 their daughter Salud married a GEORGE TODD JR and they had 3 daughters and one son. They were interned in Santo Tomas POW camp in or about 1941. It was in camp that their son was born and died.

I would love to know more about why people were leaving Catalan, Spain, why they moved to Mindoro, Phil in the 1800's and what it must have been like to live in Mindoro at that time. My mother-in-law talks of headhunters in Mindoro. I have read mainly about the slave trade. I have requested a new message board for Mindoro. I hope that more people will post to it and we will collectively compile the story of this island and the Spaniards who landed on its shores.

Angela da Silva
It suggests there is a local DC (which may contain more information) but, not reading Portugese, I have no idea where to locate this - preferably online.
My relative in question was HILDA PRISCILLA HARLAND.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Jenny

Try this website: www.familysearch.org

It's free and if you can search by country. If you link to Brazil, you will see they have a link to immigration docs. Then you can search by name. I found several relatives I knew had traveled from Portugal to Brazil that way.

The ancestry website has a lot of ship records. Just limit your search to immigration and travel - rather than searching all docs - and it seems to help.

Good luck.

I am looking for information on the family of Francisco Silveria born about 1840 in Portugal. I have very limited information on him.

I know he had a nephew named Manoel Baptista and a niece named Luduvina Baptista that possibly lived in Lisbon. He also had a niece named Maria Amalia (surname unknown) and a nephew named Belchior (surname unknown). Based on a letter, I believe he had a brother-in-law named Manoel Maria (surname unknown). The letter by Manoel Maria refers to Francisco as cunhado, which I think means brother-in-law.

Francisco Silveria immigrated to Texas in the 1800s, but was in Lisbon, Portugal visiting his family in 1909 based on a letter I have. I also have photos of various Portuguese relatives but I am unable to identify the people in the photos.

I am looking for information on my grandmother, she changed names often so here I go. On her Alien Registration Form she has Maria de Santos. She was from Horta Fayal, Azore Islands. She came to America on the S.S.Madonna arriving at Providence, Rhose Island on May 10, 1912. Her brother picked her up Joseph and Caroline de Silva or Silva or Santos. I just don't know.
Maria's father was a fisherman and was lost at sea. Her mother died after the father. Maria was a little girl, so she went to live with a sister. The sister could not take of her so she sent her to a Convent. The Convent burned down so I do not have a name or where it is.
Maria came to America eventually changed her name to Mary and married my grandfather Harry Nicholas Miller. Living in Oakland, California.
If someone can help me I would appreciate it.
Thank You,
jmanderson551

Hi Marion,
I am a great great grandson of Thomas Collins and Leocadia Collins.
My mother was Doris Collins who emigrated to Australia in 1927.
Have you much information on this couple?
I would be interested to see it if possible.
Apparently Thomas Collins was Deputy Commissary in Lord Wellington's army in the Penisular War.That's how he came to Portugal. He married Leocadia Da Silva in April 1813 in Lyon,France apparently.
He was a very wealthy merchant in Lisbon, Portugal up until
1823 when he was put in prison for 4 years on trumped up charges.
He was fully exonerated.
He returned to England in 1829.His wife and himself were given a pension by the Portugeuse Government I believe.
I think he was a book publisher in London
He wrote a book "Statement of claims on the Portuguese Government" in 1844.
I believe he changed his name to Robert B.Scott after 1851.
Do you have anything else?
Best regards,
John Long,
Launceston.
Tasmania.
Australia.
Hello, I am searching for info on Rosa Lima and her son (my great-grandfather) August Costa from the Warm Springs area in California. Rosa was born in the Azores, and August was born in Brazil. I do have photos of their graves (thank you, Susan) and some census records. Ideas on where to further search and any stories/photos on the family would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Cherie

Perestrello da Mesquita, Lisbon, Madeira & India

There was a thread on this board several years ago - now expired - on the Perestrello family. I am a social anthropologist and recently discovered in a small compound in South India a monument to Felipe Perestrello da Mesquita. He appears to have been a missionary - the religious communities were inchoate up to Diamper in 1599 so not necessarily a Franciscan or a Jesuit. The interesting item is the coat of arms - descent from the Mesquita, Noronha & Matos families and from the House of Lancaster. The monument has been dated at 1530-1540. The discovery has received front page attention in India. Any help with Felipe's exact ancestry is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information regarding Manuel (Emanuel) Cato who sailed to Portugal in July, 1891 from Washington State - I do not know what US port he departed from. He left Yakima County Washington on July 15, 1891, so I would assume he arrived back in his native Portugal either late in July or Early August. He was born about 1843. Some family stories suggest he traveled with his wife, Mary, and sons Joseph and Frank - but I have no confirmation of this. Can anyone can tell me how I might access records in Portugal regarding his arrival?

The Melim last name is known in Madeira Islands from at least 1600 to now. And is known some of them migrated to
Hawai and US in the 19 century.
But there is a Melim branch in north Portugal. There is even a small place named Melim at Sanfins, Valença. Will this place be the origin of the name, or some melim give the name to the place? I ignore it and it's an interesting issue to clarify.
Miguel de Cervantes, the D. Quixote author, refers a Francisco de Melim, count of Espinoy (Belgium?) as a member of the Toison d'Or Order member in 1516. This is the earlier reference to a Melim I know.

Information on records for Vila Real and Braga Portugal

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with Portugese records. I am trying to locate siblings for someone who was born in 1893 in Braga (I know his dad's name) and a siblings for a woman born in 1902 in Real Vila (I have both her mother and fathers names)

Can any tell me if there are indexes in Portugal that may help in locating children of parents from this area?

Thank you,
Vicky
