Birth Records in Famalicao? Carvalho/Gomes
My Grandfather, a Manuel Carvalho (I know, very common name in Portugal) died in 1946 and we lost all trace of his family. I have established through my research that he was born 29 October 1888, in Santa Eulalia, Arnoso, Vila Nova de Famalicao, that he had two brothers, Antonio and Jose, born in 1885 and 1892, respectively, that they lived in Mansfield, Massachusetts around 1917, then I lose track of the brothers. I'm wondering if anyone knows how I would go abotu acquiring his birth record from Famalicao? I know that his parents were a Manuel Carvalho and Joachina Gomes, and that he born 29 October 1888. I know that there aren't necessarily a lot of civil birth records before 1911. Can anyone help me out?

Re: Birth Records in Famalicao? Carvalho/Gomes
Thanks for responding to my inquiry, Pedro. I have quite a few photographs from my grandfather's side of the family, all of people I can not identify. Perhaps some of them will look familiar somehow to you. Most of the pictures are from the 20's and 30's, but there may be someone in there that looks familiar. I am not quite sure how to obtain a birth certificate from Portugal, but I plan to visit the Portuguese consulate in New York City, where I live. If you would be interested in looking at the photos, let me know and I will be happy to email them to you. The sum of what I know is that Manuel, Antonio, and Jose Carvalho were born to a Manuel Carvalho and Joachina Gomes in the 1880's-1890's, and emigrated to the US in the 1910's. They were born in Santa Eulalia, Arnozo, V de Famalicao. Is Santa Eulalia near your birthplace?

Re: Birth Records in Famalicao? Carvalho/Gomes
Hi, I am wondering if there is more than one Vila Nova de Famalicao, my grandfather Felix Carvalho Faria was born there in 1887 but said Famalicao is located in Braga. My great grandfather's name was Antonio Carvalho and I believe you can inquire about birth records here: crc.vnova-famalicao@dgrn.mj.pt. Adriana Faria

Re: Birth Records in Famalicao? Carvalho/Gomes
Thanks so much for that link, Adriana. Indeed, my Carvalho's are from Braga. The municipality, not the city. I haven't fully educated myself on the difference between freguesias, municipalities, regions and such, but I think we are talking about the same Vila Nova. On some of my grandfather's records it says Santa Eulalia, some Vila Nova, some Vila Nova da Famalicao. All of the photographs of long forgotten relatives that he left behind say Braga on them. I'll check that link, thanks again!

I don't know how I didn't see this post before, Pedro, but thank you for responding! My grandfather was from Santa Eulalia, VN de Famalica, more specifically, and I was able to locate a gentleman there who provided me with a photocopy of my grandfather's baptismal certificate, but I am still at a loss as to how to procure a certified birth certificate, so I can help my mother with her dual citizenship. If you'd like to see the baptismal record, send me an email at NYCMTM@aol.com

Re: Birth Records in Famalicao? Carvalho/Gomes
I know that you might already have solved your search, but I would love to know who helped you get the baptism certificate, as I need to get my grandfather's. It is my understanding that back then they only had the baptism certificate as proof of birth, and I believe that a certified copy of it can be obtained through the university of minho. Thank you! Adriana.
