I have a Reed family in my ancestry. The spelling is different from your family's spelling, but I thought I would reach out to you nonetheless. It certainly doesn't sound like a Portuguese name.

My 2x great grandfather was named William Reed and I believe he was born in the US, however his father, Joseph Reed was born on the island of Madeira in 1834. Joseph was married to Mary Jane Andrews who I believe he met in the US.

Joseph's mother's name was Constantina, but I don't have her family name. Joseph was probably a cooper by trade.
