Hi Linda
I think you might have had contact with our daughter. It is definitely the same family as Murray's. Would you like to contact me off the list. My email address is:
ann-murray.e@xtra.co.nz
We can compare notes, but most of what I have is what people have put on various lists etc.
Regards
Ann

Hello Ann
Yes it looks like we have the same Emmanuel Kirdy ( he is my great great grandfather and there were two children born on the Chathams that is correct. The story I have is that Emmanuel was on a Whaler ship and jumped but as he was only 14 at the time I don't think he would have been a Whaler himself but as it is unclear exactly what ship it is hard to say what the true story is.
Who is your husband?
Regards
Linda

Xavier is not a common Azorian name. My wife's great-grandfather is Joao Machado Xavier who emigrated in 1871, but from Sao Jorge. His father was Jose & he had an older brother named Manuel. This family might be of interest to you (as well as us)
http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=piedade&l...

My husband's great grandparents were both from Pico Azores and immigrated to the U.S. (Boston) around 1884. Their names were Manuel Xavier and Maria Rogers Rocha Xavier. We are traveling to Azores in a month and were hoping to find some relatives. If anyone has any tips on finding genealogical information from Azores before we go there, I would appreciate it. thanks. Kristin Palmer

He married Jessie Stewart in 1882 in Ashburton, but there were two children born in the Chathams.

First thing I'd suggest doing is group the pages by "style." By that I mean, the pages that are written in the same format.

Then you probably really only need a quarter of the pages translated and can apply the translated formats to the others.

Here are two pages that can give you a hand at doing some translation work yourself:

Pronunciation of Numbers (as in dates):
http://www.learn-portuguese-with-rafa.com/how-to-pronounce-p...

Months of the Year:
http://www.brazil-help.com/months.htm

If you can type the letters, you can also translate certain words on this website:
http://translation.babylon.com/portuguese/to-english/#

The older records are going to be harder because sometimes they use abbreviations for names (example: Machado = Mdo) and sometimes might even use Latin, rather than Portuguese.

Good luck!!

Robert

Paul:
These are all quite legible, but I doubt if anyone will translate all of your records as a group. Much better to submit them one at a time. And to do so, you will have to submit them to the AZORES-GENEALOGY group as James suggested. On that group you will find many very capable translators.

Translators will also want to know the link from whence came these records. Makes it much easier than isolated pages, which may or may not be parts of the same individual's record.
Denis

"Gesperry" surname?

I'm trying to find the correct surname for my 2nd great grandfather, Joseph Gesperry/Gesbury/Guisfrieri/Guisper. This is what I have found on Ancestry and FamilySearch, as well as family history that was passed along to me. Joseph Gesperry was born 8 Jan 1834 on the island of Faial, not sure what city. He supposedly came to the US on board a whaling ship and landed somewhere in the New England states. I have found him in the US Naturalization index, stating the date of arrival as 12 Aug 1851, no port given. He settled in Portland, Cumberland, Me. The earliest record I have of him is his marriage on 20 Oct 1856 at St.Dominic's Roman Catholic Church in Portland,Me, to Ann Connor (or Cooney, according to family history)from the Maine marriage database on Ancestry. He was naturalized 7 Sep 1868 in Maine. Somewhere between 1876 and 1880, the family moved to Providence, RI. His parents are possibly Manuel and Mary. Any help in finding out his correct surname is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vicki

Hi Tony,

I was very pleased to notice that I am related to this ancestor of yours from Terceira. One of his great-great-great-grandparents are also my ancestors.
Did you do testing through FTDNA? If so, I can check to see if there is a recent match. If you are logged in there, look for a match to Doug da Rocha Holmes.

I suppose you have other Portuguese ancestry with a connection to Sao Miguel.

Contact me directly at:
terceira@dholmes.com

Doug

How can I find out what the meaning is of both surnames. I know my gggrandfather had different ways of spelling Suares (Soares, Suarez) but all of his writings only showed Montero. He was from Oporto Portugal. Also, does anyone know names of ships leaving portugal in the late 1790's or early 1800's (what port he might have left from to arrive in Mexico).
Appreciate any input!

You may already know this. But, with a name like Levi Simmons, I would suggest doing a search for Jewish records in the Azores. Do that even if, as far as you know, he was a practicing Catholic because that name is most certainly Sephardic Jewish in origin.

Wish I could help you further, but I'm unfamiliar with the extent of what records might be available.

Also, the Portuguese version of John would be João. Not sure what the Portuguese version of Levi would be, since it's Jewish in origin. Additionally records at that time MIGHT be in Latin.

Good luck!

Robert

Re: Brander Family

Hi,
I am studying the Brander family for an English friend here in the US.

All your Branders are probably descendants of Alexander #1 Brander (c.1670, Elgin, Morayshire, Scotland) and his wife Barbara Cummings. They had two sons: Alexander #2 Brander (c.1700 Elgin, m. Eliz Donaldson, no issue) and John Brander (c.1705 Elgin, a merchant, m1 Margaret Allen, m2 Phyllis Blanchard)

John Brander and Margaret Allen had two sons: Alexander #3 Brander (1729-1794) and James Brander (1733-1780). About 1755 these sons set up a citrus and export/import business. Alexander #3 moved to London to handle imports and distribution; he did not marry. James moved to Lisbon to handle purchase and export, married three times (m1 Mary Dickson, m2Helen Dunbar, m3Mary Stephen). In the 1760s James turned over the Portugal/Azores side of the business to his sons, returned to Morayshire,Scotland, purchased land and built the Pitgaveny estate for which the family is known "The Branders of Pitgaveny".

If you can provide a bit more information about your William Brander who died Jan 1854 in Ponta Delgada, I might be able to ascertain his link to these earlier Branders. If you are on Ancestry.com, take a look at my public Lucas-Brander Family Tree for a complete sense of what I have unearthed so far.

Since I do receive Message Board notifications, it is best to interact by e-mail - mine is lenfriedel@gmail.com.

Regards,
Len Friedel
Port Townsend, Washington

Here is the info I have posted on the message board. There is a little more detail so I thought I would post here too

Hi All,

I am searching for information and I am hoping someone here may be able to help me.

My great great great grandfather came from Portugal. The region is unknown at present but could be somewhere around the Porto district or Azores region (this is second hand information from a relative). I think he was born approx 1814 - 1822 (Although family think it could be as late as 1836 but this doesn't match age on documents I have) and left Portugal on a whaling ship in which he jumped off in Australia. I think I have narrowed down the whaling ship to Jeannette which sailed from New Bedford in 1842 and he was listed as a boy (what does this mean?). He lived in Australia for a while then sailed on the Oliver Lang to New Zealand where I believed he changed his name from Jose Francisco de Simas to either Jose Leal de Simas or Jose Silva de Simas. I believe the Silva to be his mothers maiden name.

I am seeking any information about his life but particularly information about his younger days. I dont have names for his parents or an exact location of his birth but would love to find this information out.

Anyone out there that can help me :
Looking for the village and baptismal record of Mariano SILVA, born about April 1847, in Sao Miguel, the son of Jose BETTANCOURT SEQUEIRA and Maria Izabel. A record in his handwriting reads "Encarnacao Sao Miguel." He is alleged to have stowed away on a whaling ship about the year 1862. The first documentation of him as a member of a whaling crew is on the ship Graduate, out of Marion, MA in September 1869. He settled in Marion, MA, married Mary Bethiah Paine, and died in 1924. Would like to correspond with any connected with this family or who has knowledge of what "Encarnacao" means in connection with Sao Miguel.
Amy:
Your first step will be the absolute necessity of learning the birth location of your ancestor. You mention "portugal' - mighten that also be from one of the Azorean Islands? A daunting task before you, but not impossible.

To help, I suggest joining the "azores@googlegroups.com" message board [rootsweb apparently does not allow me to directly send the link. Replace the quotes with <>].

This is a 800+ member group of persons with like interests - from many parts of the world: Brazil, United States, Bermuda, Hawaii, Canada, Australia, etc. I have often seen the SILVA surname, and coincidently, today, someone is inquiring about a LEAL.

The administrator of the board, Cheri Mello, has prepared a set of helpful instructions for those just getting started with their searches, and I know that the members will also quickly offer their help.
Denis

Another NZ descendant of an Azorean just touching base.

Don't know of your chap, and I've had no success in finding the baptism of mine in the Azores, but wondered how many records you've looked at in NZ, because you likely need to tie into the right island to get the best support.

Mine, Emanuel DIAZ (the version he used in NZ) was born in 1840 on Faial (parish unknown) ~ arrived here ca 1860s (I think on the Robert Towns), but no parents recorded on his marriage, death, or naturalisation records. His master mariner records gave his date of birth... along with a family bible.

Julie M.

I am looking for information on my Great Great Great Grandfather who was born approx 1836 and left portugal for Australia and then onto NZ. His name as I know was Jose De Simas but at some stage he changed his name to include his mothers maiden name Silva. Records here in NZ list him as Jose Silva De Simas and also Jose Leal De Simas. Can anyone help me??
