It would be great if you could get the name of your great great grandad, the name of the father of Hendrik senior....

I did some searching on the name of Vlasman in Katwijk, and found a marriage of a Johannes Vlasman in 1919. I will pull the population registration tomorrow. It runs up to 1920, so maybe we get lucky and he had a son named Hendrik born in 1919 or 1920.

For now, good night and I will let you know tomorrow what I have found.
Marianne

Hi dear Vlasman,

I am afraid we are dealing with dates that are on the edge of being not publicly available due to privacy legislation here in The Netherlands... Tomorrow I will see if I can find anything. Maybe there is a population registration available, but I fear the worst. Do you have any idea when your g grandfather was born? That might help in finding his family.

I am afraid though that if he is born after 1920 there is nothing to be found, unless you know the names of his parents (your g g grandparents that is).

Fingers crossed,
Marianne

Hi Marianne,
My granddad is actually from Liverpool but it is his dad I am trying to research. All I know is that my granddad's family are from Katwijk 16km north of The Hague. All I know is what they did in England.
My Great-Granddad Hendrik Vlasman married Maria Hughes (born in England) in Liverpool in 1943. My Granddad's name is Hendrick Vlasman he has a brother called Victor Vlasman who still lives there but we have lost contact with him. My Granddad was born in 1944. My Great-Granddad and my Great-Grandmother Maria got divorced in Katwijk, Holland but I don't know what year. So she brought my Granddad back to England and Victor stayed with his dad. I know Victor has a child called Victor who married Bernadette in Holland and they have children. Henry (my grand-dad) married Eileen Dutton in England and had seven children in England. That is all the information I have I hope its useful.

Wiewaswie.nl has data on a lot of places but not on all.... Rotterdam and 's Gravenhage (The Hague) for example are not in there. they have different databases.

Do you know where exactly where your grandad came from?

I don't know wether you like to search for yourself, and you just like to be pointed to the right database, but his birth place is essential for any further search.

If you can give as many details as possible, we can try to get find him and point you to the right starting point.

Kind regards,
Marianne
Hi Jan
Thank you for last message. Fencing is a sport.
John and Jacoba Jackson had 9 children, their names as follows: Johanna Maria, William Charles, Hildagonda, Dorothea Wilhelmina, Nora Laura Winnifred, Howard William, Grace Magdalena Elizabeth, Gwendoline Beatrice, Vera Kathleen.

The information regarding John living in Gouda is from family living in England who had been corresponding with my Uncle here in Australia. NOt sure how reliable the information was but we have so little to go on.

John gained employment with a respectable photography business in England known as Elliot & Fry. They photographed VIP, government ministers, sporting heroes, society people and even Charles Darwin.

My Uncle is going to contact friends in England who have a daughter living in The Hague, and see if she will go to the archives of The Hague & search the Bevolkingsregister for the record of Jacoba Sutmuller for us. This is our only source to research the register.

Thanks again
Lyn

G'day Lyn,

Of course it's possible to search the records of Utrecht but keep in mind that the province is also called Utrecht.

John could be Jan , Johannes and Jacob could be also Jacobus but even if we find a person with those names it doesn't prove it's your John Jacob.

This is the link : http://www.hetutrechtsarchief.nl/collectie/archiefbank/index...

Did they have more children and if so what are the names ?

There could be a lot of reasons why he changed his name :
Still married , wanted by the law, or simple a unpronounceable surname.

Allthough not all marriage-records of the Netherlands are online It looks like they didn't get married in the Netherlands.

Just curious but what does a master fencer do.
Is that a kind of black smith who makes fences ?

Where is your information coming from that he lived in Gouda ?

Not online but Jan Brul mentioned it already in his reply that besides the birth, marriage and death records ( burgelijke stand ) there is also at that time records ( bevolkingsregister )like the record I send you before of the family Sutmuller.

So in the archive of The Hague has to be searched in Bevolkingsregister for the record of Jacoba Sutmuller and hopefully there is some connection to be found to John Jacob
Jackson.

Bye Jan

Hi Jan
I think you have a match with Jacoba Theodora Aleida Sutmuller, born 30-11-1862. Many thanks.
I tried to look up the family search website to see if I could source the same records but I was unsuccessful. So you have definitely been a great help with finding information.

My great grandfather was born in about 1858 in Utrecht (from his death certificate). His wife Jacoba was still alive at the time of his death and would have known his place of birth.
His name in England was John Jacob Jackson.
If he changed his name to sound more "English" could he have been known as Johann Jacob ???? in Holland. If you have any spare time would you be able to try a search if you think this information has any merit.
Kind regards
Lyn
Australia
G'day Lyn

Jan Brul stated in a earlier message that my link to the birth record of Johanna maria is invalid but it isn't.
When I click on it it works !

The link to the birth-record of Jacoba Theodora Aleida in Jan Brul's reply I gave already in my reply so I think he wanted to show you the birth-record of Catharina Theodora Jacoba but you stated earlier Jacoba Theodora was born around 1863

The link Jan Brul gave you of Regionaal archief Zutphen is not working so use my link of Regionaal archief Zutphen Click behind ,for example , Jacoba Theodora Aleida's name and then click on "inzien van de Akte " and then you will see the page 143 that Jan Brul is mentioning.

Hi Jan
I cannot thank you enough for your help. I am so thrilled to have this new information and getting closer to finding out what my dutch surname would have been, had my great grandfather not changed it when he moved to England.
I grew up with "Jackson" but I have always wondered what our real dutch family surname would have been.
My email address is lynt@exemail.com.au
Thankyou thankyou so much
Lyn

I am trying to trace information on my great grandmother Jacobina Therodora Sutmuller b.abt 1863 Holland and my great grandfather.
Jacobina married a dutchman who changed his name to John Jacob Jackson (born abt 1858-9) when the family immigrated to England abt 1884-1886.
John lived in The Hague where he was a fencing master. He also lived in Gouda. We do not know his dutch name. On his UK death certificate it notes that he was born in Utrecht, Holland.
Jacobina and John had a child Johanna Maria born in Holland DOB 01.01.1884.
Would it be a possibility to trace a fencing master without a name, using John's age only and the fact that he lived in The Hague?
Are there any immigration records in Holland for that time period that are accessible online.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Lyn

Well actually i have done a lot of research on this person.

First we need a bit of history of the van Arkel family... The family was very wealthy and owned a massive amount of land in the midst of the netherlands and in france (Bar Pierrepont), also they were first in line to inherit the lands of van Cleef.. So Jan van arkel (Otto the bastard van arkel's dad) declared himself a lord... the lords of Holland and Gelre didn't like that and war broke out.. the rest of the story you can find here : http://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkelse_Oorlogen
At the end, the van Arkels lost and were stripped of most of their lands (holland an gelre divided it between themselves) and got stripped of their titles and apart from a daughter and a couple of bastard children the van Arkel line died out...

The reason people think (including me) that Willem Ottensz is the son of Otto the bastard van Arkel is because of a couple of points...
First of all this document which proves Otto had a son called Willem :
Asperen fol. 11v

http://www.hogenda.nl/wp-content/plugins/hogenda-search/down...

Also, Willem Ottensz had siblings who were burgers of utrecht, we know Otto also lived atleast a part of his life there since he is buried there.

The 3rd point is that willem Ottensz (Ottensz means Otto's son, Ot is just a shorter version of Otto) owned a massive amount of land in the land of van Arkel that they were allowed to keep/rent and was very wealthy, he even was ordered to build a watchtower with 3 holes.

The 4th point was his son Claes Willem Ottensz' spouse... The van Afferden were of lower nobility at that time... her granddad was ambtman of rheden (the one who takes the counts place when he is not there) and his dad was ontvanger-generaal(the head of all the finances and taxes) of the county of Gelre, his dad again was mayor of the city of Gelre... We know she was a servant of the Ottensz family, but not the kind of peasant servant...
it was common at that time to send your daughter to work as a servant for some time to another noble family to teach them woman things and manners, like boys were sent to other nobles to have them educated and trained as a knight.
So the van Afferden were not exactly poor or low status, so they would have never let her marry just a simple commoner...

The 5th point is the act of inheritance of Claes Willems Ottensz...
I've never seen it for myself but it was very richly decorated and stately looking according to some sources...

And finally the 6th point is that Willems father is sometimes called Ot the miller... a miller was in that time(and long after) a synonim of bastard in dutch

Well still i don't know for certain, but everything points in the direction of Willem Ottensz being Otto the bastard's son... :)

Hi,

So what do you need to know ? In the 1911 census she is living with 'Albert' Castein but her Rossiter children are living in various places as servants or relatives.

I do have a copy of Frank and Ketura's marriage but I would assume that Ketura then married Castein in the Registry Office which are not online.

Frank Rossiter died 1905 and is buried Abney Park cemetery.

I'm afraid I don't like the Genes site and have always used Ancestry or Findmypast.

Janet

Hi Janet, thanks for the details..(I ended up getting ripped off on the genes reunited site and have been inclined not to purchase anything on these sites again as usually it isnt what I was looking for)
any info I did find on Olive Frances never had parents listed on the document...I guess what I was looking for was details on the Castein marraiges to Rossiter's in subsequent generations and found it interesting that father and son might have found partners of the same family name from the same town but I couldnt find details...ie; parents of bride and groom, etc...

Hi,
Keturah Rossiter was born Keturah Walker, as mentioned earlier in the thread. I think she was the daughter of Alfred Walker and Harriet Verney whose marriage is recorded in the MAR Qtr 1860 in Winslow Registration District, which is the same district where Keturah's birth is registered in the JUNE Qtr of 1862.Hope this helps.
Best wishes, ancuseruk

Hi,

Well Keturah was NOT born a Rossiter she married a Rossiter. She was born Keturah Walker. There is no problem with the birth of Olive Frances - she was registered in Hackney 1902. Her parents were Frank and Keturah Rossiter. Surely if you purchased the marriage for Olive it would show her correct father and maybe other helpful details as well. Rossiter is not my direct line, but as I am helping a cousin I do have a lot of info on them. What else do you need to know.
Janet

Thanks Jan, thanks for the reply...I have got a fair ways back on the Castein side now...as far as Sander Casteijn and Evertje Tap...looking for the connection of Sander Casteijn to possible relatives Karsteijn`s as it appears around the 1700`s there was alot of surname changes amongst various children..Thanks
The Rossiter connection is after the Smit/Castein divorce in Amsterdam. After his divorce in 1905 he and 2 of his children (Clasina Helena and Johannes Albertus)moved to London, England. I found a marraige record in 1910 for him and Keturah Rossiter in Wandsworth - still looking for birth and parents of Keturah
A record I already had for Johannes Albertus and Olive Frances Rossiter marraige in Wandworth 1928 - also no factual birth info or parents can be found for Olive FRances - I have an unofficial birthday of December 10th, 1901 London, England

Site https://www.wiewaswie.nl/ has 11 hits on Albertus Johannes Castein, 7 marriages, 3 birthes and 1 death in Holland. I do not see a Rossiter connection. I see in the yearindex 1901 for Amsterdam on family search the birth registration on 29 Oct of Castein, Johs Albertus, register 11, page 76. See the record on
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12699-114163-20... or look at the attachment.
His parents married 14 June 1882 in Arnhem and divorced on 23 May 1905 in Amsterdam, reg. 1, page 37. For the marriage see:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11678-165020-34... It shows that the groom is 27 years old and born in Nijmegen. His parents are Evert Castein and Everdina Christina Janssen. The bride is Hendrika Frederika Smit, 22 years and born in Arnhem, daughter of Frederik Willem Smit and Elisabeth Kuster

Jan in Amsterdam.
