This might be too long a stretch, but there is a Gallic word wemyss that means cave. Wemyss and Wemes can be pronounced similarly, so wemesfeld could be an area with caves. I have not found wemes or wemelsfeld, or wemesfeld in my big German dictionary so if the origin of the name is German it might be a dialect or an ancient word lost in the past. Just idle speculation. Now I need to figure out why the Wemes/Wemesfelder family moved to NY. Thanks again for all your help.
