I'm looking for information about my great-grandfather Steven Campagne born in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1824. He was married to Johanna Grim and had a daughter Anna (my grandmother) in 1860. I would like to know if they had any other children and when they married. Alsoi who were their parents and where did they come from.

Steven Campagne was my great great grandfather (born in 1824 to Johanna Grim (married in 1850 at age 25), and I have info on his folks, and so on. Check out my family tree. Steven's son Steven (married to Petronilla) was my great grandfather, his daughter Nellie was my grandma, and my mom's mom. And so on, etc. If you need info please feel free to e mail me at pkbayleafs@yahoo.com. I have info back to 1700s.

Dear Suzanne,

Have you discovered http://www.genlias.nl yet? It contains an index to many marriage (and some birth and death) records in the Netherlands. It is always a good idea to look up the original documents, because (1) indexes are made by humans and might contain errors, and (2) the real records contain more information than is shown in the index.

In the Genlias index I found:

Utrecht (city), birth record, 17 Apr 1824, nr. 469
Steven Campagne, born on 16 Apr 1824 in Utrecht, son of Steven Campagne and Jannetje Brinkman.

Utrecht (city), marriage record, 13 Nov 1850, nr. 485
Steven Campagne, 26 years old, born in Utrecht, son of Steven Campagne and Jannetje Brinkman, marries
Johanna Grim, 25 years old, born in Utrecht, daughgter of Otto Grim and Bastiana Barrekie.

If you look in the GenLias index, you'll also find their children:
* Johanna Bastiana Campagne, born 1851.
* Louis Campagne, born 1853.
* Mietje Campagne, born 1854.
* Mietje Campagne, born 1856.
* Louis Campagne, born 1857.
* Maria Antonia Campagne, born 1858.
* Steven Campagne, born 1860.
* Anna Campagne, born 1863.
* Jaantje Campagne, born 1865.

I hope you'll find lot more there!

Good luck, cheers,

Hi Lars
Thanks for the info. I have all that and am on genlias all the time!
I've been researching for 12 years and have a tree on geni.com which has 45 million on it!
What I really want is to get back past my 6th great grandfather Carel Campagne born 1650 in Tiel and back to the French connection.
I also use the Stamboom forum which is also very useful.
Any further hints would be welcome.
Best wishes,
Suzanne

Dear Suzanne,

Sorry about that, hadn't read the thread carefully enough, and missed the fact that your first post was from 1999... :-)

I don't have "the answer" for you, but you might be unfamiliar with the 1973 article "Campagne, van Lookeren Campagne, Compagne and Campagne van Oort", published by I.H.J. Campagne in Gens Nostra (page 285). Gens Nostra (Lating for "our people/family) is the magazine of the NGV (http://www.ngv.nl), the Dutch Genealogical Society.

In the article he tells that he has searched for the ancestors of Steven Companje, who had citizenship of Tiel in 1706. He suspected that he was also a member of the Campagne family he was working on.

His oldest known ancestor was Jan Campagne, drummer in the regiment of Capt. Pierre de Perponcher-Maissoneuve, he married in Wadenoyen (published the banns in Tiel on 9 September 1648) with Neesken Jans, of Tiel. Jan died in Tiel on 17 January 1687. They had 2 sons, Andries and Carel. This Carel was baptised in Tiel on 2 April 1665, and died in 1741 in Avezaath. He married on 5 May 1700 in Wadenoyen with Aletta Homoet, of Bentheim, which lies in Germany.

The regiment Jan Campagne worked for, was one of 4 French regiments of infantry, given by the French to the Dutch in 1603, to help them in their 80-year (1568-1648) freedom war against the Spanish. There were more Campagne's in the region around Tiel in those days: Claude, Isaac, Bartholome, Peter and Charles.

It is likely that they all were French, the name (de) Campagne seems to have its origins in the department Pas-de-Calais in Franve. Between the towns of Ardres and Abbeville, one may find 6 villages called "Campagne".

So, no answers for you, but if you didn't know the article already, you now have some extra information.

Kind regards,

Lars Roobol

Hi Lars,
Thanks for the article, which I already had but your translation is better than the attempt I made, though I got most of it!
I wonder if the Carel Campagne mentoned is mine, I have his wife as Trijntje Loeffen and the parents of my 5th great grandfather Steven born in 1690. Is it possible that Aletta Homoet was his 2nd wife?
If you could throw any light on that I would be very grateful.
Best wishes,
Suzanne
