All of my maternal ancestors came through Slagharen.
Basically a whole cluster of families went from the MEPPEN and LINGEN area of Germany, lived in Slagharen in the Province of Overijssel in the Netherlands about 10 years, then came to US in 1837-1838. Santel, Heimann, Rensing, Krieger, Kalmer, (my ancerstors) in 1838-1839. . Wellen, Determan, Menke, Rolves, Korte, Middendorf, Determan (married into my ancestors families in Illinois) were also in Slagharen from Germany and I am not sure of their individual immigration dates, but they almost have to be "mine", mostly in the US by 1850s.
Other associated names in Germany and Clinton County, ILL are: Tonnies, Jansen, Wuebbels, Altgilbers, Berendsen
Slagharen was founded during the construction of the Dedemsvaart Canal and my families went there as workers on the canal, and came to the US after a stay there of about 10 years.
Is anyone else working on these families? Can anyone document when they came to Slagharen?
Can we compare notes?

I am trying to develop my connections to the Kruger Family which threads back from my mothers side. I understand I descend from Paul Kruger of Boer War fame, but have no proof. Last Kruger in my geneology is Charlotta Magdalena Kruger, died in 1949 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, spouse of Pieter Punt. I live in Canada.

Thanks for the offer Teunis, I'm just cleaning up some dangling branches in my direct ancestor lines. The Kruger line ends in 1949 in my records, but hopefully you have the missing link etc. Look forward to hearing from you. I'm in Orillia about 2 hours north or Toronto. My mother believes one Paul Kruger of S Africa fame is a distant uncle to her, but it is only via family rumour when she was quite young. I was born in Rotterdam in 1952 and immigrated with my parents when I was 19 months old.

My Wester family is from 't Zandt, Groningen Province, The Netherlands. My g-g-grandfather was Tjaard Wester, who immigrated to America in 1881, arriving in Chicago and continuing to Orange City, Ia. Thereafter, I can not find him. He was a widower. His wife, Alberdina Pekelder, died in Holland. His two older sons, Arend (who I cannot trace) and Hendrik (my g-grandfather) arrived in 1880. He followed with the three younger children, Tryntje, Aaltje, and Dirk. I have traced this branch on the Wester clan to the mid 1700's in Groningen Province. Does this fit with any of your research? Looking forward to hearing from you, Robert Webster, born Vernon Wester.

Hello Bill,
This is a very belated answer, I just cane across you message because I am researching my family tree. I believe that you are my nephew. Your mother must be my cousin Lenie and your farther Lou Hooykaas? My mother's name in Charlotta Magdalena Punt. who is the sister of your mother, my aunt Jo. I can't give you any information of my grandmother, the only thing I remember that we called her mother "opoe Kruger".
If you find this message, please let me know how if your mum and dad are still alive. Pieter van Arkel
