I am looking for any information on my great grandparents Johannis (John) Arts and Hendrina Van de Heij. John was born 10 March 1815 in Zeeland, Noord Barbant, Netherlands and died in Wisconsin (U.S.) in December 1864. John married Hedrina Van de Heij on 14 April 1845 in Zeeland. Hendrina was born September 7, 1818 also in Zeeland and died 19 October 1905 in Hollandtown, Brown County, Wisconsin. I believe they emigrated to the U.S. in May/June 1848.

Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Margaret Brown

in the 1870 census, john vandeheij, aged 56, living in Brown County Wisconsin indicates he is a widower and arrived 17 years prior from Noord Brabant. He has 10 children and is a farmer. His other children are John 25, Martin 17, Jonas 15, Henry 14, Ellen 12, George 11, Mary 9, Theodore 6, Cornelius 5, and Hannah 3.

From the 1860 Census, john has 7 children, is married to Berda aged 34 is a farmer and states he has been in the US for 7 years. One additional child, the oldest is listed at Peter age 15 and John is 14.

I also found another vandeheij, anton who is living in brown county in 1870 from noord brabant who did emmigrate in 1848. he is 43 and married to ellen aged 35.

in addtion, there is a cornelius who emigrated in 1848 but was born in 1810.

this info doesnt match yours, but it was close enough that i thought i would forward it to you.

No doubt you will find a lot about this families in the two books about the Vandehey-family, both written by Scott Vandehey:
Wooden Shoes West, [Eugene, Oregon] 1979,
&
On Good Ground, Eugene, Oregon, 1996.

Greetings from Oregon:
I have written books on the vandeHei/vandeHeij/vandehey family: WOODEN SHOES WEST and its sequel,ON GOOD GROUND.
Hendrina (vandeHeij) Arts was the daughter of Henry John vandeHei and Petronella van Bree. I'm presently researching for another book on the children of Henry and Petronella.
I'm willing to share photos and information.

Father Vandehey,

I was delighted to receive your e-mail. As I know very little about the Vandehey family I would love to hear everything you have to tell.

My grandmother, Cornelia Arts Dietzler, died some twenty-eight years before I was born.so consequently, I have no first hand knowledge from her. Like so my of us, I waited until by father and his siblings had also passed away before becoming interested in genealogy. Now, I am trying to piece things together through whatever records I can find.

I may have some photos of Cornelia and her siblings and families. I am in the process of trying to identify them with some distant cousins in Wisconsin. Let me know if you would be interested in what I am able to find out.

I have ordered your books through the Hennepin County Library system. Can't wait for them to arrive.

My address is: Margaret Brown

Dear fellow Ancestry members:

My uncle is the Rev. Father Scott Vandehey; author of "Wooden Shoes West."
I am very much interested in getting the word out that his book is back in publication.

Until now many related families had a difficult time getting a copy of this book for their family library

A paperback version of the original 1979 publication is now available on amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Shoes-West-Henry-Vandehey/dp/15...

All proceeds of this independently published book go to Father Scott Vandehey and charities of his choice.

Best Regards,

Neil Vandehey
