Hallo rwarne63,

I haven't yet found what I'm looking for, but you may be able to help me with this as living in US and maybe able to look into data and registrations I can not.
First let me help you with your Dutch history.
Helen Datema was born as Hiltje Datema at the village of Ezinge, Aduard on 05-07-1878. She was a daughter of Lucas / Lukas Datema (1843-1908) and Grietje Drent(h)je (1850-19..). They married at Ezinge, Aduard 09-07-1874. Lucas Datema was the son of Gerrit Pieters Datema and Janke Harms Sijtzema. Grietje Drentje was a daughter of Jakob Jakobs Drentje and Hiltje Gerrits Sasveld.
I found several children Datema. Janke (f) 1876-1939 married twice, Hiltje 1878-1948, Jakob 1881-19.. married 1906 Marigje Alijda van Bottenburg, Gerrit 1883-1901, Pieter (m) 1886-1887, Pieterke (f) 1888-19.., Aaltje (f) 1891- ....
Are you related to Jakob ??

Hiltje Datema must have known Jan (John) Mennes already in The Netherlands, because she came to Jan Mennes in Kalamazoo early 1908 and they married 03-06-1908 (june third - I use European notation - pretty confusing).
Daughter Grace was born 1909, no further information on her.
Son Albert was born 07-09-1910, married Evelyn June Nash (1916-1988). Their son Albert W. was born 18-10-1937 and died (62) Vicksburg 08-03-1999. Children ??
Son Lucas or Luke was born 14-06-1912 and died (87) Schoolcraft Kalamazoo 15-04-1999. Children ??
Daughter Emma was born 1915 ?? No further info on her.
Son Garrett was born 04-03-1916 and died (58) sept. 1974. He married Helen ..... (1914-?). They had a daughter Gertrude 1938 ??
And there was a stillborn daughter Ida 15-05-1920.

Maybe you could help to get me in an email contact with any (grand)grandchildren of John Mennes and Helen Datema; I don't have the means to find any.

Thank you,
Ton Aarts
Roosendaak The Netherlands
I am not sure you have found the information you were seeking. I am trying to find information out regarding the Datema name Helen (Datema) Mennes is a daughter of Lucas or Lukas Datema, who is my Great Great Grandfather. She was married to a John Mennes. I have a newpaper clipping of John's Obituary. He died April 29, 1979, born January 21, 1881 in the Netherlands. He was formerly from Vicksburg, Michigan. Had son's by the names of Albert, Luke, Garrett and daughters by the name of Grace and Emma. Hope this helps.

Yes, this is my line. I looks as though we're the same generation. Kornelis was also my g-g-grandfather. My grandfather was Albert, the brother of your Henry VK.

I've quite a bit of information on our Van Kampen line, going back to before 1710. I'm not sure what you have or how far you're wanting to go, but I'd be happy to swap information with you.

Are you by chance the child of Jean VK?

If you'd like, we can email off the website. You can reach me at gvankampen@aol.com

I am searching for contact. For an item in the NEF (the New Frisian Encyclopedia) I need some informations concerning your father (that's to say: birthdate; birthplace; possible date of death and place of death). As he was two times Frisian champion and once national champion in the so called 'kortebaan'-races he will possible be registrated in this new encyclopedia. Plaese take contact with me.
Kind regards from Friesland,
Hedman Bijlsma

My grandfather was Henry Van Kampen--born in Michigan around 1894--married to Gezina (Grace) Schortinghuis.

Hallo,

I am married to Ingrid Mennes. Her father's grandfather was Pieter Mennes (1882-1911). His older brother was Jan Mennes (1881) who came to Kalamazoo Michigan in 1907 (John Mennes) and started a business in photo equipment I believe. He married the Dutch girl Hiltje (Helen) Datema (1878). She died 1948. They had possibly 5 or 6 children.
In 1951 John Mennes went back to The Netherlands / Groningen to visit family (also the only son of his brother Pieter) and married Johanna Achterhof, daughter of Siert Achterhof and Annegien Dijkstra.
Siert Achterhof was born Ulrum, 24-09-1868, Son of Johannes Achterhof and Lena Huizinga and died (81) Ulrum, 24-12-1949.
Johanna Achterhof (1901-1972) was the oldest daughter of John's older halfsister Annegien Dijkstra. John's and Pieter's mother was Emke Mennes and the father of her 5 ! children was NN, but I found out that it was Albert Dijkstra (1850-1907).
When John and his second wife Johanna went back to Kalamazoo in 1952 her younger brother Albert (1904) went along. I don't know about his life in Kalamazoo.
So, my wife is related to Johanna (and Albert) Achterhof through Johanna Achterhof and John Mennes.
John Mennes died (98) Vicksburg Kalamazoo 1979.

Ton Aarts
Roosendaal, The Netherlands

My great-great grandparents were born 03/29/1875 Nieuw Beerta Netherlands. Folkert Alberts son of Frauke Franzen Alberts. He married Hauke Reiken and they lived in Parkersburg. They purchased the Okke Van Hauen farm 1933. My grandma Talena Alberts built and ran the HiWay 20 Cafe and then sold it in the late 80's. The recent tornado wiped it out. I have a lot of information on my family heritage in Parkersburg, Beerta Netherlands and Germany as well.

Ryan, the father of Johannes Bussema is not known. Bussema is her maiden name. His mother came to Amsterdam and lived there in 1839. Genlias gives his name as NN NN. This is short for the latin Nomen Nescio or in english Name Not Known. She might have been in the business that Amsterdam is still known for or she might have had an accident. The birth record that I copied tells us that she declared that she lived in a house standing at Weesperzijde near the Jansbridge 79/50.
The first kept census of Amsterdam is the 1851 census. She is then certainly already long away of Amsterdam.

Ryan,
Helena Bussema is the mother of Johannes Bussema. She declared so at the court in 1864. When her son was asked for the registration of his marriage he needed to supply a birth certificate. There was none, so he could not marry. His mother requested the court in Amsterdam a late registration and that was done. Due to this his son was already born before the late marriage finally occured. The copy if the birth certificate of the bride is produced on November 2, 1864; His military record on December 3, 1864. Both are in time for a birth on January 16, 1865 in Sauwerd. See
http://www.allegroningers.nl/index2.php?task=bladeren&id... for their real marriage record.

Jan

Jan, thank you but still doesn't answer my questions. I'm trying to figure who the father is. My second question is if the Helena that had a child with van waes is the same Helena. Both Johannes and van waes child are around the same age. I am believing either van waes is the father, but no concrete evidence to support my assumption. Then my next question will be is Helena maiden name. I am also assuming that on Johannes birth record that bussema is her married name. These are just hypothetical assumptions but I would like to rule them out. I know Helena is mother, father is my question. I'm hoping their is some paper somewhere that can answer that question, just seemed to have avoided me; maybe it's my lack of reading Dutch!
