Surnames: VanEngen, vanIngen
Hello, my name is Jodi VanEngen Walder. The correct spelling of my maiden name is vanIngen. I was told that means from or of Ingen. Is there a way to find more information on the origin of my family name? My grandfather is Willem, William VanEngen, vanIngen. He was born in 1908 in Wageningen, Gelderland. His parents has already settled in the state of Michigan in the United States and he was born when his family traveled home to the Netherlands for a visit. His father is Klazinus Wilhelmus VanEngen, vanIngen and his mother is Johanna Scholten. I can provide more information if someone can get me started? I would appreciate any assistance available!
Thank you,

Jodi VanEngen Walder

Hello Jodi,

It is possible that your family's surname came from a reference to the town of "Engden" Germany is the County of Bentheim. This town was right on the border of the Netherlands (Province of Overijssel) and Germany (Engden being about 15 minutes drive from the border). Many people from the area on both the Dutch and German side intermarried and moved back and forth. I have seen where in Germany the last name was "van Engden" but in the Netherlands, the same family, used the surname of "van Engen". There are by far more families with the name spelled "van Ingen" than the name "van Engen".

There is also a town in Germany called "Engen" but it is quite a bit further from the Netherlands, being located at the German/Swiss border.

Without actually doing the research on your family, I surmise that your surname is in reference to "Engden".

John

Hi Jodi,

'Ingen' is a town in Gelderland which is probably where your name came from.

You can find many Dutch records at http://www.wiewaswie.nl. A search for records with first person: Ingen and second person: Scholten showed me the index entry for the marriage record of your great-grandparents: https://www.wiewaswie.nl/en/search/search/record-details/a2a... You can retrieve the original record by browsing the Netherlands civil registration records at http://www.familysearch.org. Using WieWasWie, you should be able to trace your family back to the early 1800s, although without knowing Dutch you will be limited to the information in the indexes. They are pretty reliable but of course less so than the original records. The original records also provide you information like the occupations and signatures.

My website has more information about doing research in the Netherlands: http://www.dutchgenealogy.nl.

Good luck with your research,

Thank you Yvette for confirming my suspicions!! I am still trying to connect my family directly with the town itself but I'm sure that will take some time. I appreciate your suggestions on where to find more information!!

Hi Jodi,

The best way to find out the origins of any surname is to just trace the (usually male) line until you find the first person who used the name. You can then see if there is a connection to the town of Ingen. In Wageningen and the surrounding area, many people had surnames by the 1600s so I would expect you would first need to go back at least 10 generations.

Hello Jodi,

I also have van Ingen/Engen in my genealogy, in the 18th century, very many van Ingen's came of Dodewaard and surrounding, in province Gelderland.
As already suggested you should follow your line back from the one you know.
On www.wiewaswie.nl, also in English , I found:
Klazinus Wilhelmus van Ingen (as then written so) , his marriage record in Wageningen, 1906, tells he is a son of
Gerrit Jan van Ingen and Bartje van Brussen.
This Gerrit Jan van Ingen is according to his marriage record in 1869 in Wageningen son of Albert van Ingen and Dirkje van Hattum.
Albert van Ingen is according to his marriage record in 1830,DODEWAARD, a son of Janus van Ingen and Neeltje Winkelman.
The first name Janus is also written as Adrianus , Janus is a short form of Adrianus .
His death record on name Adrianus tells he died on 29-03-1855 in Dodewaard, 70 yrs old , husband of Neeltje Winkelman.
Janus/Adrianus is a son of Aalbert van Ingen and Rijntje Doeleman(s).
They married on 23-04-1770 in Hien and Dodewaard.
Janus/Adrinus must have been born about 1785
On the website of www.geldersarchief.nl you can search although in NL http://www.geldersarchief.nl/zoeken/?mizk_alle=&mizig=12...

baptism of Adrianus:
Adrianus Ingen, van, 28-05-1784
baptised:
28-05-1784
Doopplaats:
Hien en Dodewaard
Dopeling:
Adrianus Ingen, van
Moeder:
Rijntje Doeleman
Getuigen e.a.:
Kaatje Ingen, van
Vader:
Aalbert Ingen, van
Kerkelijke gemeente:
Hien en Dodewaard
He was baptised in Hien and Dodewaard

I know that the van Ingen-line in Hien en Dodewaard goes back a long time.
I think the chance is great that your ancestors van Ingen came from there, maybe further back from Ingen .

Thank you Jettie for all the information!!! Klazinus is my Great Grandfather. He was the only member of his family to come to the state of Michigan in the United States. I was hoping to find a living VanIngen relative in Gelderland also. Any ideas on how to do that? Thanks again for taking the time to help me!
