born < 1642 Steenwijk , died 03-10-1708 in Steenwijk, married (1) 1662 in Steenwijk to Gesin Syneeghe (Geesjen Smeeings), (2) Geertruy Tollink (Geertruud Tolling) 1666 in Steenwijk.

I have traced back our familytree to 1545 Jan Hagewolt (1545-1630) born in Staphorst.Jan Hagewolt was a caretaker for the poor in Staphorst, this care was funded by selling church property- and goods and some fonds poeple gave them. My family always stayed in the erea, so far I havent found people who left the Netherlands. Now trying to get in to birth-registers to go further back.Your tip comes in very handy ...THX

Hallo familie,

I am interested in Pieter Jans, who sailed to America on the Bontecoe in 1660, where have you found this information about his brothers from? I became interested in the Hagewolt
family due to my own ancestry though i have yet to find an a connection to Pieter Jans.

Willem Hilberts Hagewout (b. 13/07/1705) is my 6th great grandfather, his son Hilbert Willems is mentioned in severval books about Meppel, sometimes under the surname Hagewout sometimes as Moes.
'De Afscheiding van 1834 in Meppel. Een wegbereider der Afscheiding in Meppel.'
'Geschiedenis van Meppel' (red. Drs. M.A.W. Gerding).

Hi Mimi,
Sorry for the delayed response!
I have no knowledge of Jan Hagewolt. BUT...
Bergen's other book "REGISTER In Alphabetical Order, Early Settlers of Kings County, LONG ISLAND, N. Y" gave me a clue about the Lefferts of NY. In it he refers to Pieter and Leffert being assigned guardians on their father's death in 1662 which shows the must have been the younger two children on the Bonte Koe.

I then found a marriage record for Pieter in Bergen NJ:
1683 18 Nov; Pieter Pieterse Haeswout, ym, fr Dyckhuysen in Overysel; Dirckje Egberts, yd, fr Midwout on L.I. (c.)

On the ship's manifest the family is listed as from Drenthe. The geography of Drenthe and Overijssel is a bit of a mixture in this period, it's not unreasonable to state that they were from both. Now in modern Drenthe there is a village named Dijkhuizen... which is just over a mile from the tiny hamlet of Haakswold!

Haakswold is also known as Haagswold and "Haagwout" is one of the spelling variations used by the family in NY.

Personally i think this is strong enough evidence for the families' place of origin.

Alex
