Dear Rachel,
Carmen Gatt was born Carmen Patiniott in Malta. She arrived in Australia 1949 with Assuero Patiniott, his wife Mary and his daughter Adelyn ,they too were born in Malta. Carmen I presume was Assueros sister. No name of husband, again I must presume she married in Malta and was a widow . As I live in Australia I obtained this info from passenger arrivals lists. I have all information of Assuero and family emigrating to the USA and the subsequent deaths of all in Los Angeles. Of Carmen no information. Perhaps she remarried in Australia? Another interesting fact is the same year 1949 eight other Patiniott's arrived in Australia.
I have no birth/marriage certificates for any of them.
I have tried to contact several Patiniott's in Malta, but none have replied.

Thanks,

Joe Patiniott

Joe,
From my understanding of your post you are looking for a Patiniott family that emigrated to Australia?
What time they emigrated you do not say and what relation to the other family members Carmen is.
I am assuming that you have derived this information from the Maltese passport applications?
You also say that Carmen's married name was GATT.
What was her husbands name and when and where was she married? Malta or Australia.
They had one daughter Adelyn in Australia?
Do you have her birth certificate and if so have you checked her parents names on the certificate? Maltese have many given names and derivates are used, they also have been known to use one name and then another. If you have her certificate then you will have a better idea if they went by any other names.
You can then check immigration records to the US at that time period.
You also say that some of her family went to the US but you cannot find evidence of Carmen leaving Australia. Again I would look for her marriage to the GATT and any other children. If she married her children would have GATT as their surname - or perhaps you mean that GATT was her maiden name?
Perhaps it would help to clarify your information a little so advice can be given on where next to look.
All the best
Rachel Selway née Gatt

Hi I am researching my husband's family tree. I would be grateful for information on Pietro & Caterina.

The great grandfather Pietro Agius was a baker in Zurrieq (9 Strada Brtannica) and was married to Catrina Tanti. We believe Pietro was alive in 1910.

They had at least 4 children;
Annie,
Benedict,
Giuseppe
Carmelo b1872 (hubby's Grandfather)

Carmelo Agius was a Super Inspector in the Malta Police Force and was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal. He married Maria Concepta Agius b1876. They had the following children;

Annetta,
Benedict, m Georgia, had 4 children
Carmelo, m Carmelina Agius, 1 child
Colina, m Edward Pillow, 6 children,
Giuseppe, m Giuseppina Fsandi, 5 children,
Maria, m Giuseppe Camilleria, 5 children,
Emmanuel (1900-1976) m Mary Victoria Vella, 6 children,
Peter Agius m Jane Grixti Soler,
Cateriina

Emmanuel was the father of my husband. He was a Notary and a Malta Member of Parliament. They lived in B'kira, Bishop Labini Street from memory.

Any help in taking this research further would be greatly appreciated,

Ang
I am trying to trace a relative who was a British subject but born in Malta about 1856. He shows up in UK census in 1881 living in Southampton, Hampshire, but sadly dies in 1884 and only appears in that one census. I would like to find out about his family and where they came from. We tried to get information from the archives in Valetta last year but without success. Local parish record will contain information but we do not know the parish in which he was born. Can anyone help.

Hi Shanna,

If you are researching family then the best thing to do would be to start ordering a marraige certificate and then birth certificates.
They can be ordered online here
https://secure2.gov.mt/certifikati/
They do post abroad.

If you are looking to connect with Maltese family you may have to look for another social media website - people on this website are usually descendants of Maltese immigrants who are looking to trace their Maltese family.
I am a Gatt, but my grandfather was born in Floriana, the youngest of 13 children.

If you need any more help let me know.

Regards
Rachel

And this is the website that has the church records
http://archives.maltadiocese.org/Archives.aspx

Melliaha is not on there, they are still microfilming everything in the vault before they begin moving onto the other parishes. So the best thing to do is to order certificates, this will enable you to do the direct line but not siblings - although if my memory serves me correctly death certificates list children.

Also bear in mind that a baby will be given several names and the parent will choose one name to call them by not always their first given name. And sometimes even that name interchanges.
So for instance I was working on a line last night and found two other children, the father was christened Raymondus Aloiysius Joseph Andreas but married as Andreas, on one of his childrens baptism records he was Joseph on the next child he was Andreas again. Lucky the mother was the same which was why I was able to spot them, missed them first time round because of the father's name change.
So just be aware that name are sometimes interchangeable.

I have recently discovered my Great Grandmother was Francesca Busuttil, and Great Grandfather Andrea Farrugia according to the name given on the marriage cert of my grandmothers older sister. Both my Grandmother and her sister were born in Mellieha ( confirmed with the marriage cert). I have emailed the Parish church in Mellieha ( no response as yet ) to see if they could look at the baptismal records for my Grandmother Theresa Farrugia born February 19th 1910, hoping the record will give me further details as to who Andrea Farrugia and Francesca Busuttil Parents might be !
I have been unable to find a marriage for Andrea Farrugia and Francesca Busuttil so no luck there ! Anyone have any suggestions as to how to progress from here ?

Rosina was born in Vittoriosa.

Both Rosina and Anotonia immigrated to America in the late 1920's, early 1930's, however we believe Joseph stayed behind and may have had a family of his own?

I am looking for any info on Rosina, Antonia and Joseph's parents--the Gatt's. Would love to connect with any family we may have there or otherwise!

Best Regards,
Shanna

Hi Jayson,

If you are in receipt of the birth certificate then I guess the question is what do you want to do next?
If you are looking at tracing your line then I would suggest continuing to use the government website to order certificates. They go back to 1837. I can't remember off the top of my head what the birth certificate info would give you, whether they would have an age of parents. If you are tracing your line then I would try and look for his parents marriage certificate. Most marriages happened in the bride's parish.

They may be able to find the marriage certificate just from the names and the parish if you give an approximate marriage year. Sacco is not a common surname in Malta, unlike something like Borg, Pace is more common but the name Loius is also less common although Rosa is more common, so hopefully they can find the marriage and get a certificate.
That certificate will give you both sets of parents, occupation and age of bride and groom and where they were born which leads you nicely into ordering their birth certificates.

I've also heard that someone has transcribed the Adami Collection which is the collection of marriages from the late 1500's to late 1800's and it is on the internet.
I also have a copy at home on cd so I could trawl through and look for a marriage if you would like me to.
I guess that would be cheaper then ordering another certificate. Or you can search for the website online, I believe it's still in Italian.

Oh, and for Birkikara their parish records are online - this is the website.
http://archives.maltadiocese.org/

It's free to register and to use. Just create an account, sign in and look under 'Browse the Archives' then look for localities and Birkikara. Then the year, I'm not sure if it goes right up to the end of the 1800's but if it does you are in luck. You can find their marriage as well as any other siblings baptism and begin working back.

It is in Latin so if you need any pointers on how to read it or what words to look for let me know

Rachel

Hi Rachael,

Have you tried ordering any certificates?
It looks like you already have her marriage information.
You can order birth, marraige and death certificates on this website.
https://secure2.gov.mt/certifikati/default.aspx

They post overseas.
If your purpose is family history these certificates do have a lot of information on like occupation, age etc. More then the British ones anyway.
You can order certificates back to 1837 the time of civil registration.

The Maltese government are also microfilming their records and putting them online. They only have a few parishes complete at this time but are working on eventually having all of them done. The website is
http://archives.maltadiocese.org/default.aspx

It's free to register and free to use. Love it!

Let me know if you need any more help.

I have also heard that someone has transcribed the Adami Collection which is a collection of marriages taken place from the late 1500's to late 1800's although they haven't translated them, but it's good enough. I also have a copy of the Adami Collection on cd at home, but prefer to use the archive website.

All the best
Rachel

Sorry Chian that no one answered your message in time.

If you go to Valletta you can go to the public records office, they have the Adami Collection there which has all the marriages that have taken place in Malta since late 1500's.
You can also visit the parishes and the priests will help you look at the records although they are only open certain days and times and are busy with parish business so good to contact them ahead of time.
If you are starting as early as grandparents then it is probably best to start by ordering birth, marriage and death certificates which go back to civil registration 1837.
This can be done on this website
https://secure2.gov.mt/certifikati/default.aspx

They post overseas.
The Maltese government are microfilming the Maltese records and some parishes are now online although it will take many years to get all of the parishes done.
The website is
http://archives.maltadiocese.org/default.aspx
It's free to register and you just need to sign in each time to view the records.

If there is anything else I can help you with please let me know.

Rachel

Hi Tammy, I did trawl through first to see if I could find any more siblings earlier then her. I couldn't see any but only went back about three years (which should be sufficient but they may have had a bigger gap between children). Then I checked marriages from 1869 back and didn't see anything (although some pages I was being lazy and wasn't zooming in, just hoping to spot a Gatt and Borg together with my super laser eyesight (not!)). The good news was that I found a second marriage for one of my Gatt's, Francisca - so that doesn't help you but I felt good about it :-)

Actually, I probably should have gone through and picked out any Gatts because they would be useful to both of us.

So for the Birkikara records you will have to look at every page because there is no index.
Usually they have an index in the front or back and you can trawl through and just pick out the surnames - so for you, you would just have to have looked through really quickly for your two parents names together, noted the page number and found the record - simple. But because there is no index it means you have to go through every single page.
Which takes some time.
I'm working on the Cospicua records right now, so I go through the index, right down all the names with the surnames I am looking for and then go to the page numbers to see if they are the people I am looking for.
It's very time consuming but I just do a bit at a time and the more I do the more names I'm looking for.

They haven't microfilmed Floriana as yet. From my correspondence with them they say that the records in the vault will take about another 3 years and then they'll move onto microfilming the parishes.
So there will be more parishes on the website in the future, I'm just working through the parishes that are available.

If you do find someone let me know, I can help you read it if you need help.

all the best
Rachel

I am trying to trace more of my maternal great grandfather Guiseppe Arnaud. Married to Honorata Aqulina. He was killed Jan 20 1918 when the ship he was on The HMS Louvain was torpedoed somewhere in the Agean sea. On the Plymouth war memorial it states is parents were Carmelo and Catarina Arnaud(nee Aquilina) from Tripoli. I have a birth certificate stating that Joseph Arnaud was born in Valletta to Vincent Arnaud & Maria Darmanin. this is a great mystery to me any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input. The baptisim certificate I have where amongst my grandparents papers. On the back my grandfather wrote " Wife's father birth cerificate" The other information I have is from a letter sent to my g g grandmother upon my g g grandfathers( Guiseppe Arnaud) death. They also received the information from the Plymouth War memorial. I have requested a birth certificate with showing Carmelo & Catarina as his parents and they said there was no records. My mom Guiseppe's granddaughter said she remembered that he was born in Tripoli. I have their marriage certificate also showing that he was from Tripoli. He was with the Royal Navy and I have his service # but I can't get his service record.

Hi,
The first thing you would need to do is to review your sources to decide which one is correct.
You can probably obtain his army records which should give you some information on him - which army was he serving for?
And then the question of the birth certificate. Where did you obtain the certificate from? If you ordered it, was the correct information given? It could be another Guiseppe Arnaud. Or it could be that on his army record he put his next of kin which may have been an uncle - Carmelo Arnaud and they assumed that those were his parents.
You could also try contacting the parish that he was baptised in - most of the Maltese parishes emails are online or you can write to them if that is preferred, if they have time and you have a correct birth date then it won't take them long to look up his baptism details.

Someone has already posted the government website and I think that is the best place to start. You can order birth marriage and death certificates from that website and they will post overseas. If you need any more help then keep posting. You can also email the parishes, all their email addresses are on the internet, if they have time they will look up a marraige or a baptism etc. Most of them have indexes in the parishes which makes it quite quick to look up.

Hey I found her!!
I'm as excited as when I find someone from my family.
So here is what I found.
Her baptism was on 22 August 1869 in Birkikara and her full name was
'Maria Catharina Michaelina Philippa Carolina Josepha Helena Gatt'
Parents: Antonio Gatt and Emilia Borg both residing in this parish (Birkikara)
Godfather: Michael-Angelus Borg son of deceased Daniel and Godmother: Catherina (it says wife so I assume Michael-Angelus' wife as there is no surname for her)
Michael Angelus may be an uncle? Brother of Emilia.

Did you want me to see if I can find any other siblings? Or I could just look for a marraige for her parents. There is no index for the record that I was looking for, but if you want to look at it here is the link:
http://archives.maltadiocese.org/Archives/tabid/83/ProdID/55...

I don't know if it will work but if not it is in the Birkikara Baptism records enter page 13 and it is the first page right at the bottom.

Rachel
Hi Racheal,
It is weird that you use the example with Catrina, because that is my daughters name. They were married on February 21 1889 in Sliema, he was 24 and she was 19. Ludgardo Azzopardi was born in Floriana and his parents was Carlo Azzopardi and Angiolina Xicluna.
Thank you for your help.
Tammy

Hi Tammy,
Yes it appears that certain names were interchangeable with their derivatives. So Patrina and Catrina for example. There are many weird and wonderful things that the Maltese seem to do with their naming system. Do you have any dates for their marriage record? It should give them an age when they were married. If you have their ages and a marriage year then I can look at the Birkikara records when I get home. I'm not sure what years they go up to but I can check and then give you some suggestions of where to go next if I can't find anything.
Rachel

Hi Rachel,

Thank you so much and I am looking at my Great grandfathers and Great grandmothers marriage registry from Malta.
I thought my great grandfathers name was Richard or Riccardo but on this certificate it states Ludgardo Azzopardi, so I am thinking Ludgardo means Riccardo? and my great grandmother is Mary Gatt, so we might be related though my great grandmother...her birth place is Birkirkara Malta?? and her parents are Antonio Gatt and Emillia Gatt Nee' Borg. Thank you again hope to hear from you soon, I will keep you updated.

Tammy
