Thank you so much for your response concerning the Wagner family. You have detailed and proven the births of Jean (John) and Marie (Mary) Wagner in Pratz, Luxembourg. Mary is my paternal grandmother, John, my uncle. They had other siblings that I have found: Nick, Joseph (1863), Domonick (1868)and Josephine (1873). With all the similarities in names and families, it is sometimes difficult to be sure of the right family. Again, thank you for your information...I am now assured of the correct information.

Sincerely,

Romane Dold
Minnesota

I am trying to locate a Nico and Mattie Bromenschenkel in I think Rippig, but it may be Consdorf. They are distant relatives and live in the house our Bromenschenkel ancestors were born/lived in (Jacob B., Nicolas and Margaretha, etc.). My mom's cousin Fr. Larry Hubbard thoguht they live next door to the church in Rippig.

If anyone can help me find an online phone book that works, it would be appreciated.

I would love to learn more about them."

There is evidence of a "Nicolas Scheifen" living in the Milwaukee area in the 1860s. He had letters postmarked from "Diekirch" held at the post office. The letters were either picked up or returned. These are the only occurrences of that name indexed so far. However, there are about 40 Metz entries or references found in "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items" (1844-1950).
Gary Rebholz, compiler/editor
Milwaukee Wis.
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Indexing Milwaukee's German newspapers continuously since 2007... helping family researchers find their ancestors among Milwaukee's 99%.

regarding:
Schmit, John b. about 1838 in Gonderange/Grevenmacher, Luxembourg; m. _____; d. 28 Jan. (1882?) at Luxemburg, MN
1870 Census, Stearns County, MN, Rockville Twsp, p. 9
1. Civil death record, Stearns County, MN, Book A. p. 99, line 8

I find him on the 1875 MN census in Rockville (single), and on the 1880 census with Barbara (widow of Peter Heintz). I also find on the Stearns County Cemetery Index CD that his birth date is May 12, 1839 and death date is Feb 1, 1882 (maybe that was the burial date). buried in St. Nicholas Cemetery. John and Barbara had one daughter Mary Schmitt, depending on which online family tree you look at, she either married Peter Arnoldi or Anthony Boschert, but on the MACO Marriage site there are a couple other Mary Schmit marriage options. Mary's 1/2 brother Anton Heintz is buried in St. Martin Cemetery, and her 1/2 brother John Peter Heintz married Margaret Stein, daughter of Casper (born Gaspard in Lux) Stein and Marie Rausch in Aug 1893. Margaret and John Heintz had 3 daughters Agnes and Margaret Lucille, and Jane Heintz; Margaret Lucille was born in 1895 in Moody County, ND. and Agnes M. Heintz was born in May 1899 in SD. They are living in St Cloud in 1900 but back in Moody County in 1910-1920 where John Heintz dies in 1920 (they had 6 more children).

Gostingen/Flaxweiler - Elise Muller: Book by Charles Schmit

Hello,

My 5th great-grandmother was Elise Muller, wife of Jean Kieffer of Gostingen/Flaxweiler. Elise supposedly was born 16 Aug 1753. In June 2010, I received the following information via email:

Schmit, Charles; "Gostingen. Die Häuser und die Generationenfolge." [Families and Houses of Gostingen.]; Bibliothèque nat. Luxembourg [National Library of Luxembourg]; LB 20195; page 125:

IV Jean Kieffer, Bauer (farmer), S.v. (son of) Jean Kieffer and Elise Muller, Méchels;
IV Jean Kieffer married Marguerite Zeimet, T.v. (daughter of) Jean Zeimet and Anne Courte, Beyren, on 25 Jan 1799 at Flaxweiler;

Schmit next listed the children of Jean Kieffer and Marguerite Zeimet. My question: Who were Elise Muller's parents?

In Schmidt's book (p. 125), it reads:
"Keiffer, Jean, Bauer S.v. Jean (married symbol) Muller, Elise 94 IIIa,,Méchels (married symbol) 25.01.1799 at Flaxweiller"

I see from this that farmer Jean Kieffer was the son of Jean Keiffer, but it does not tell me the names of Elise Muller's parents. I have a feeling that the "94 IIIa" refers to another page of Schmit's book. If you have access to the book, would you please look to see if Elise's parents are listed? I would be so appreciative. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Jan

I did another search for Marguerite Wolff and here is what I found:

Looked at the Census records and it appears Marguerite Wolff died sometime between Dec 1895 and Dec 1900. That narrowed down the search for the death record.

There is a Marie Kessler listed in the table of deaths, d. 06 Oct 1899, but I could not find the actual record. Link to index: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12576-42293-81? There is no Wollf listed as having died during that time period. The only other female Kessler listed is Catherine Kessler. If the listed Marie is not Marguerite, it is possible Marguerite died in hospital and the record is perhaps located in that town/city.

The census records:

It looks like the family lived on Weideneh/Weydenneh Strasse in Koerich for the entire period.

1867 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-32380-10269-60? includes daughter Anna Kessler. 2 years old.

1871 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-32383-3674-94?

1875 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-32383-5005-39?

1880 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-32391-16071-87? There appears to be a notation about a son but I can not make out what is says.

1885 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-32390-11081-8?

1890 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-32392-10901-77? includes Edouard son of daughter Anna Kessler although birth year looks to be wrong.

1895 Koerich Census https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-32396-1993-54? includes Edouard Kessler b. 1886

1990 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-32396-6020-82? Looks like Anna Kessler had married an Einsweiler who is not present for the 1990 census. It appears Edouard Kessler took the Einsweiler surname. Marguerite Wolff is not included.

Also in the table is the marriage of Pierre Einsweiler and Anne Kessler 19 Apr 1898 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-12576-50985-61? . The marriage record may note whether Marguerite wolff was still alive at that time. I could not find that record either though.

I am looking for help in translating a notary entry. Specifically are there any indications of the relationship between Nicolas and Thomas Leigener/Legener of Gilsdorf who are mentioned in this entry? It seems they are from the same family, but I can not tell if there is a more specific relationship indicated. Any help is appreciated.
See attached historic map detailing the different partitions of Luxembourg. Orange: lost to France in 1659 at the Treaty of the Pyrenees, ending the 30 years war, Yellow: lost to Prussia in 1815 at the Vienna Congress after the Napoleonic Wars, Green: at the London Treaty of 1839 ending the Belgian Revolution.
You can see Kyllburg in the Northeaster border.
The archives and records of the former territories are not in Luxembourg. I suppose the church records are in the custody of the Diocesan Archives (Bistumsarchiv) in Trier.
The genealogical study of all the Kyllburg families has been published by J. Heck "Familienbuch Kyllburg 1685-1798" published by the author in Dusseldorf in 1995
http://www.wgff.net/trier/tr-pub-Familienbuecher.htm

Jean, Nittel Germany, located just on the East side of the Mosel river boundary between Luxembourg and Germany, was once part of Luxembourg - before 1815. Kyllburg is a good distance East of there. How far East did the Luxembourg Territory extend prior to 1815? Does Luxembourg have ownership of the Vital Records for what was its territory before 1815?
Thanks,
Tom Prost

There is an interesting detail to the marriage Baasen-Gretsch. Under the date of 11 Dec 1828 the marriage is already recorded in the Remich books, but bears no signature. A note gives the explanation: The marriage was not solemnized as the groom failed to produce the death records of the parents. A bit ironic that this should happen to Baasen, who had studied law and should have known better. Finally the marriage is celebrated on the 17th.
Jean françois Baasen is born in Luxembourg City 14 June 1795 (St. Nicholas parish). His parents John Baasen and Catherine Reuter got married 9 Nov 1768 in Luxembourg (St Nicholas parish, recorded Register #12 folio 66, Record book in the archives of the City of Luxembourg)
His grand parents John Baasen and Mary Catherine Bockholtz were married 11 Oct 1740 in Luxemburg (St. Ulric parish register #38 folio 174)
The great grand parents were Andre Baasen and Angela Feltz. According to Joseph Reuter: "In den Gassen von Stadtgrund" Luxembourg 1952 the Baasens were lockkeepers and originated from Kyllburg, former Luxembourg territory, since 1815 part of the Kingdom of Prussia and now Federal republic of Germany.
Jean François formally has his departure to the United States registered in the "Registres de domicile" of the City of Luxembourg on Jan 3, 1851. Copy of declaration is attached.
Jean Francois Baasen and Maria Catharina Sybella Gretsch 1794-1849 (Remich or city of Lux?)

I am seeking information from Luxembourg records for Jean Francois Baasen b. 1794 in Luxembourg. Was a Notary from 1826-1849 and then came to the U.S. in 1849 as a Consul for Luxembourg (controlled at the time by the Netherlands). He died in Milwauke, Wisconsin in Oct 1874. His wife was Maria Catharina Sybella Gretsch. b. 1811 in we think Remich, Luxembourg, and died in Milwaukee Apr 1878.
they had 9 children we've found so far, all but 2 born in Luxembourg:
Francois Marie Joseph Baasen 1829-1901 - First Secretary of State of Minnesota
Father Jean Baptiste 1833-1902 buried in Apalachicola, FL
Elisabeth Baasen 1837-1922 buried in Milwaukee
Eva Therese Baasen (Sister Odilia of the Order of St. Chretienne) died in Merz, France 1839-1880
John G. Baasen 1843-1900 died in Chicago, buried in family plot in Milwaukee
Prof. Michael Baasen 1844-1917 buried in Milwaukee
Nicholas Baasen 1846-1927 buried in Minnesota
Maria Theresa Francisca Baasen Minges 1852-1873 (b. in Milwaukee, d. and buried in Rochester, NY)
Brigetta Josephina Maria Baasen 1854- (died before 1922 per sister Elise's obituary)

I'm particularly looking for parents or marriage records of Jean Francois and Maria as we don't have much information on them from Luxembourg. I did find some possible siblings on the deltgen.com website, but not sure.

any help is appreciated.
