Researching emigration from Bertrange, Luxembourg
Michael
HAMES, born in Bertrange 27 Mar 1845, emigrated to
Minnesota in 1868, he stayed in Read’s
Landing and Mazeppa, both in
Wabasha County. In 1871 he married Catherine FREILING (spellings vary: FROELING,
FREILICH, FRIELICH) in Read’s
Landing, moved to Mazeppa, both in
Wabasha Co. Because of breathing problems the family moved to
Archer Co. TX in 1894, where Michael died 13 Feb 1900.
After his death his wife Catherine moved to
Montana in 1904 and homesteaded 80 acres near Great
Falls. The children that came with her were:
Nicholas John

I would be interested to find out were she settled down and homesteaded. Descendants mailed me the following information “She worked on the
Herber and
Poncelet Ranches before moving to her own in about 1907. I believe they were all located south of Great
Falls,
Montana somewhere around
Highway 227 between Sand Coulee and
Eden. Kate's homestead was located close to
Eden,
Montana but not for sure”
Michael had an older brother Nicholas
HAMES, born in 1829 in Bertrange, who emigrated in 1853. He could be Nicholas Joseph
HAMES, died 18 Nov 1913, who is buried at
Calvary cemetery in Great
Falls. Is there a death record / obituary? Where is that cemetery located?
I will be coming from Luxembourg to Great
Falls 19-20 September for further research and in order to take some pictures for illustrating my research article. Any directions and hints would be appreciated.
