In Luxemburgish the village Heiderscheid is called Heischent. I think the name is related to the area that had for sure a meaning in the old times. The familly name Heiderscheid you can find it all over the country not only in Heiderscheid so I'm not sure if the name is related to the village. In order to understand the meaning only reading the history of this area could perhaps help you as to translate it today will not be possible, even if I would like to help you. I do also have the name Heiderscheid in my genealogie where are yours from? Mine came from Wiltz.

Hello,

I think you first have to divide the name into two words

HEIDER and SCHEID

According to the famour luxemburgish historian Nicolas Van Werveke
Scheid means a border line. This can be a line between two areas, two counties, a water divide line etc.
He also says that it may come from the old celtic word CETUM which means Forest.

Now concerning the word Heider I would say that it may come from the heather plant=heathland or a kind of wasteland.

I hope this helps
Best regards from Luxemburg

Just reading your posts (from 2008) and I have been trying to find parents for my 2nd Great-Grandmother, Suzanne Heiderscheid. She is from Buschrodt, Wahl Parish, Radange Canton, Luxembourg, born 1845. Her husband's family is all from Wiltz.

It's so confusing - I wish it was closer. I feel like with a car and a translator I could have it figured out in a day :)

Thanks!

I can not find any record of a Suzanne Heiderscheid born 1845 in Buschrodt. There was a Susanna born 1844 in Wahl but it looks like she did not live very long. There is a Catharina in Buschrodt but several years younger. In Wahl, there were a couple of other female Heiderscheids but none named Susanne (other than the one previously mentioned) nor born in 1845.
