I the historian for the Church of St. Peter in St. Peter, Minnesota. I am in the process of writing the parish history for the 150th anniversary. I am also a member of the Calvary Cemetery board, where several members of the Schabert family are buried. St. Peter had two catholic churches, the Irish St. Peter's Church and the German St. Mary's. Father Joseph Schabert was born in Le Sueur County, Kasota Township, and was baptized in St. Mary's also known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception. He was the only son of the parish to become a priest. It is interesting the Majerus link with the Schabert family. The last pastor of St. Mary's Church was Father Harry J. Majerus, were served from 1980 to 1991, when the parish was re-unified with St. Peter's.
I remember Catherine Schabert, who was active in St. Mary's, in the 1980's several priests from Africa would visit St. Peter in the summer, they would often stay at Mrs. Schabert's home on North Third Street.
Father Schabert served as dean of St. Thomas College in St. Paul, he died in 1968 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Peter.
