Definitely must be related somewhere in the family tree, as Rao & Quattrochi are also part of my lineage. Rappazzo is a very common name in Castroreale, the Sicilian town of my grandparents and family.

Thanks for the input! Yes, I now have many pages (handwritten so far) that have created an index of page number and village represented by many of the birth and marriage data files.
For any family members of note in my specific villages, I have made additional notes, and saved copies of the registers.
The data is fabulous, and I find that many birth records also indicate the later marriage date...which is a great way to expand your search.
Slow and painstaking, true, but worth it. I intend to put my 'index' out here on the board for folks that may be interested in searching the files at a later date.
Terry-

I spent months going through these page by page and placing records related to my surnames into an Excel spreadsheet with notes that probably only I can decipher. This does allow me to sort the names, and then manually go through and find the family links. When in the trenches, I remembered names as I went through. I had to walk away from it for a few months as I too was going a bit crazy. There is no easy way to do it, but the information is invaluable and well worth the time.

It turns out much (or all?) of the Village data for Messina is not indexed yet...but you can look at the scanned pages.

So, I've found a few records by paging through, looking for my village name, and the dates I need. Never knew till now just how many villages there are in Messina provice - wow! So...you go stir crazy just paging thru, about 10-15 pages at a time, so you don't miss a small village of births for a year. If you happen upon the right page range, you're in luck..but painful process when the files run about 2700 pages each!

My question is..has anyone found a way to work with this data in the raw, before it's indexed? I started to note page numbers and which village/year were on them...thinking that publishing that might help the next searcher. Do you know if anything like that exists already?
Here is a what I'm looking at:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-23863-49083-24...

Messina is indexed....Villagi are not. (or are partially done) thx!
Hi..I see this is a very old request, so you may have found your info already.

However, I have one reference to a Bonnano.

Santa Bonnano married Giuseppe La Colla. ( don't have the bmd dates, they are mentioned only on daughters marriage record) They had Pietronilla La Colla about 1863. She went on to marry Stellario Tortorella (around 1883) and had 7 children with him, from 1883-1902. She came to US in 1905 as a widow.

She married Giuseppe Genovese in 1907 in Boston. (In this record, you will see mention of mother, Santa Bonnano) They had at least another three children from 1907 to 1911

Our direct relative is her son, Giuseppe Tortorella, b feb 1895 in St Stefano Medio, Messina.

Hope that helps -- and if you find our Bonnano has sibling/parent info..please let me know too!
Terry

How to find names of Baron/Baroness in 1910 Messina area?

I have two relatives that met and married through their service of a Baron & Baroness in Messina. He was the coachman, she was the ladys maid to the Baroness. They are the great g-parents of my husband. A 90 year old aunt just retold this story about her parents yesterday..but although she is sharp as a wit, and has a great memory, the names of the B's still escape her.

The relatives are Giuseppe Tortorella, b Feb 1895 and Giuseppa Coletta, b 10Jul 1888. (She, apparently spent her childhood in a convent in Messina, and the Baroness 'found' her there and brought her into her household) Also, this may very well be in the Santa Stefano, Medio area, since that is where both of these people were born.

Any pointers on how to figure out who they were in service with would be appreciated!

Triolo or Caminiti families in Messina, Sicily, Italy

I'm looking for relatives related to my grandparents: Elena Triolo, born April 21, 1929, and Carmelo Caminiti, born Feb. 7, 1937. I believe they grew up near Messina and their daughter: Gracia Maria Caminiti was born in Messina April 12, 1956. (She is my mother and she immigrated to the US with her mother in 1958 at the age of 2.) My grandfather Carmelo immigrated here in 1956. My grandmother Elena had a twin brother by the name of Carmene Triolo, and I believe another brother by the name of Guiseppe Triolo. Her parents names were Francesco and Natalie Triolo. Any information would be great. I just wanted to add to this that my mother's uncle Guiseppe was married to Teresa Rascona who lived in Mandanici. My mother was born in Mandanici area of Messina. I believe Teresa lived at Via Provinciale Badia 1, in Casalvecchio Siculo. Guiseppe and Teresa had a daughter by the name of Adele Carmela Triolo. I have a picture of her taken in Santa Teresa di Riva.

Hello John...yes, Francesco and Flavia are my Grandparents. I have very little information on them and never knew them since they were deceased before I was born. Santo Bertino was Francesco's Father, I am told. But I have no confirmation on that. Francesco and Flavia did have a son, named Santo and he died at age five. If you have any information on any of them, I would love to hear from you. Thanks so much for your response!!

Barbara

Hello....I too, am searching Bertino family from Philadelphia. My interest is in Francesco (Frank) Bertino born in Sicily about 1884. He married in Philadelphia in 1905 to Flavia (Florence) Pino born in Sicily about 1887. Francesco had a brother Antonio and two sisters, Angelina, married Peter Ruggeri and Sarah, married a Pino. I am told that their Father was Santo Bertino. I do not have much information on any of these people and it has been difficult to research. If you have any information on this line, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks so much,
Barbara Obermeier

Salvatore (b ca 1845) or Francesco Cardullo (b circa 1863)

I am descended from Cardullo's on my paternal, maternal side. My grandmother's names was Giovanna Cardullo (b Providence, RI), but her Father was a merchant who went back and forth with his family. I belive her father's (Francesco) father was Salvatore Cardullo. The name Gaetana belongs to my great aunt.

My great grandmother's mother was named Antonia or Antonetta Gaurnera (she did not take the name Cardullo according to passenger lists at Ellis Island)- I think she married Salvatore's son Francesco Cardullo and they settled in Providence and later Polk Cty FLA

Do you know anything about these families?

If you aearch through the Google News Archive, you will find some articles about the Mugaveros in The Day's archives. Not all of their back issues have been digitalized, so you may have to browse through the issues they do have page by page. Here is the url for one article I found: http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=mpErAAAAIBAJ&sjid=b... . I hope it works. The story is titled "Mugavero may be lost to Huskies" and is dated May 6, 1938.

Looking back in the Ellis Island records, I found another possible address for Antonio Mugavero in Sicily. When Francesca Siragusa and her son, Antonino came over on April 15,1909, she said that her father-in-law "Mugavero, Antonio" lived at "(North) Valvusa". I can't find any such town in Sicily; I'm probably misreading it. How lucky you are to be in contact with family back in Italy! I hope she is able to sort this all out.

This morning we had a very New England snowfall. When I was very small, my father was stationed at the submarine base in Groton. We lived on Highland street in New London for a few years, then moved to Groton once the Navy built housing. It is such a coincidence that both our families lived so close!

Best wishes,
Margaret

It is so nice to meet you and Serenitie, as well :)...although I have never met her Mom Chantell or Greg, I have had the pleasure of meeting Floyd...his sister's Francis and Beverly I have grown up with (although much older--Francis lives with my Aunt Con' who has always lived in the same house as my grandparents...and I grew up with Bev and her 4 boys, namely the youngest Michael)...I can remember 2 times Floyd and his wife (God Rest Her Soul) making the trip back to the east coast, well--once with his wife and one time without...he was always so very sweet and close with my Poppy aka Fedele aka Dates :)...I also knew Floyd, Bev' and Fran's brother Tony and his wife Marie. Sadly Tony just passed--he was a great man...despite being on the West Coast, he made a lasting impression on me in the few times we met...we shared many laughs when he was in CT...famiglia is just so important!!!
As for my grandfather, I'm sure there are many articles about him--never in my life have I met someone so educated, kind and respected than he was. His name still carries great value in the city of New London even years after his passing! I am simply proud and honored to be his granddaughter!!! I was told his nickname came from a childhood friend's mother--when he was at their house playing, they would always snack on dates which was one of his favorites as a kid--she jokingly called him that one day and it stuck...stuck to the point that that was what was on his license plate, etc...A few members of the family I can remember called him Uncle Daily, as well--short for Fedele...to me, he was my Poppy :)...I would love to see some of the articles about him if you have the links etc...I have some actual articles directly related to his academic accolades and athletic achievements, as well. He played both baseball and basketball at the University of Connecticut.
I saw that address in your original post--that is beyond neat and I am in contact with family we have in Sicily right now--although she does not live in Tusa, she will be visiting there soon when another one of my cousins travels there next year...I will run this address by them to see if this house still stands...
I have to get my son off to preschool but, quick fun fact...standing on one of the main roads in New London is a big statue of Christopher Columbus (the base of the statue reads Columbo)...it was our family who put that statue there. Not sure what year it was placed there but so neat that a recognized New London landmark was put there by our relatives! Gives me a sense of pride whenever I drive by it...
I would love to keep in touch--if I learn of anything more I will def. share--I would so appreciate it and love for you to do the same!!!
And although I love the New England weather--I love love snow and cold--always have said if I could tan from snow I would be all set lol, but soaking in the sunshine and what I can picture as a beautiful and fragrant breeze--filled with scents of citrus in Tusa and other beautiful parts of Sicily sounds like pure perfection to me!!! Some day....

Love, Aimee

It is wonderful to meet you! My granddaughter is Serenitie Marie Beall-Mugavero the daughter of Chantell Marie Mugavero who is the daughter of Greg Mugavero who is the son of Floyd Mugavero who is the son of Antonio Mugavero, your grandfather's oldest brother.

So far I've been able to follow the Mugavero family through census records, passenger lists and city directories. I've just started to look into newspaper stories. There are losts of stories about your grandfather! Do you how he got the nickname 'Dates'?

I too dream of visiting Tusa. Especially now. I live in Idaho where it has been bitterly cold and overcast for the past month. Springtime in Sicily sounds wonderful!

The most intriguing bit of information I have found is an address in Tusa for Antonio Mugavero's father, also named Antonio. It is Via Tui Sella Mgna 23 and is in Antonio's brother Natale's immigration records. I don't know if I've read it correctly.

It's a pleasure to hear from you, as well,
Margaret
