I am trying to verify the spelling of my great grandfather's surname. The 1900 census lists him as Giuseppe Sbacchisi living in Chicago, IL. He American-ized his name to Joesph Bakes. His father's headstone reads Ignozio Sbaches. Giuseppe was born 22 Sept 1877, I believe, in Termini (his older siblings were born there according to their death certificates). Ignozio was born about 1841.
Is there any way to check Italian civil records for Termini,Sicily? Also, would Italian surnames begin with "sb". I'm having trouble locating their arrival on ship manifests with these spellings.
Thankss in advance for any ideas!!
