Yes Vicky I am on ancestry. You must bear with me though. I am new to this and to roots. I am muddling my way through, not sure i know what I am doing. My son loves music, plays flute sax and piano. He has shown a keen interest in Frederick from Lombardy. For me, I would love to know whom my fathers father was. My grandmother married a man called Pearton. He took the place of father to my dad. However Ruth - rumour has it, got pregnant whilst in service. I do not know if I will ever trace my true grandfather since no fathers name was given on dads birth certificate.
Relatives may know? It is a long shot. Vicky I think Fredericks elder brother may have been Albert Giovanni Angelo Leggeri born 1859?

House of Magenta?

Family tradition states that my G.Grandmother, Columbia Mengenta, (1858 - 1896,) was from a royal or noble family in Italy from the "House of Magenta". Phonetically speaking, the family always pronounced this and her name as "MAGENTA" just like the color. United States Marriage records suggest her name was spelled Mengenta. A few other records spell it as Mangiante. The family story says they left Italy because of political unrest.
I am familiar with the Sec. War for Independence called the "Magenta Wars". So far it all sounds plausible. That is, until I try to locate anything to connect tradition with historical locations, nobilty etc. I keep coming up empty handed. Any suggestions?

Hi, i am helping a friend look into their family history. His grt grandfather was Frederick Guilio Francesco Leggeri born 1865 London, I have found that his father was Francesco Leggeri and he was born in 1824 in Cremona Lombardy Italy, her married Martha Fleet in Dover Kent 1858. Does anyone know this family or would they be able to advise me how to search for the family in Lombardy.

Thanks Vicky

My great great grandmother Guiditta Bernasconi Brusa came to Ellis Island in 1903 with stated prior residence of Como. Her husband, Angelo Brusa, came prior to her in 1903 but I cannot find any record of his entry. Their children were Dielma, Guila, Virginia, and Adele all born in Italy. Walter was born later in Pennsylvania. I'm trying to find where they were exactly from in Como and not having much success. Please email me at kimberly.brown@sbcglobal.net if you have any information or can help with research. Thank you!

Your Luigi Louis Tremonti MD was born in Gibillino, Sicily, I believe, from the New Orleans ship manifest that says he was going to Astas in Beaumont, Tx. I have it on my Urbani Family Tree for him, or could send you a copy if you send me your email. I have lots of Tremontis from Lorenzago in northern italy- if you think that Louis' father or grandfather came from there, let me know and I will look for them.
Karen Urbani
keurbani@gmail.com

I am looking for information on my Grandfather, Rizeri (Arthur)Restani. His Petition for naturalization states that he was born in Gonsaga, Italy, which is in Lombardy. I have his Ellis Island information but would very much like to see if anyone might have information regarding his parents. I have his marriage certificate to my GM but cannot decipher the parents names. Photocopy too light.

Thanks.
Terri

Bagolino and Cossirano, Brenzano, Palazzolo are too distant from them.
Scalvi is a different surname and not a mistake of Scalvini. Both of them are typical Brescia's surname.
If you know the right place of birth of the person that you named in post I could help you to have a copy of documents from the office.
I leave you my email address.

Alan --

I assume you have checked the online Italian records from Garzeno/Lombardy? I found and tracked lots of descendants, including current day residents, with those records, so that when I got to Garzeno, I knew what to look for in the church records, and had a chart of who to try to locate in the village (one man I met there said I knew more about who was related to whom than the current residents!). Since the custom was to ame your first-born son after the paternal grandfather, first-born daughter after the paternal grandmother, second-born son after the maternal grandfather, etc., you can imagine how many cousins of the same age have the exact same name. The key when looking at those records (other than being able to decipher Latin/Italian), is after the name it often says "da [name of the father]" (i.e., "Giovanni Matteri da Natale", as opposed to his cousin born the same year to his uncle Carlo called "Giovanni Matteri da Carlo"). Sometimes there are 5 kids with the same name of almost the same age -- hard to keep apart but for the "da" clue.

Garzeno is lovely, and I stayed in a flat owned by the kids of parents born in Garzeno who emigrated to and live in the UK, and use the apartment for their holidays visiting cousins. I can send you photos of the flat, and of Garzeno, plus a link to the website for the flat, if you are interested. If so, give me your email address. I squeezed in a week there prior to my cousin's wedding in Germany.

Jackie

p.s. I am jealous of your life! I am still working full time (living in Annapolis, Maryland), which seems to get in the way of all the other things I like to do (travel, photography, genealogy research, etc., etc. -- and live in other countries)! :)

Thank you Jackie for your reply, my Angelo Maffia married Maria Mattara in the early 1840s, I know that the marriage was in Italy because a) There is no record of the marraige in the UK,b) I have a record of them travelling to England as a Married couple.Which was quite a few years after Angelo was first here. Maria was born in 1818 & I reckon that she was a Mattari, the name is too similar. These are the variations of MAFFIA I had to get through in UK, Moffia,Moffio,Maffio,Maffiere!!!! I am definitly going there now,I have delayed so far because all I had was Como,so now I have something definite. My wife &I spend 6 months of the year in Florida &3 months in Turkey, so it is a bit of a problem fitting in another journey.
Best Wishes
Alan Bryan

Thanks! The Maffia name is very common in Garzeno, and surrounding area. There are lots of marriages between the same family names through the centuries, and that continues today. In my tree, amongst descendants of the two Matteri sisters who remained in Garzeno with their parents (those were the two siblings I could find in the Italian records), there are two Maffia women who married Robba men (another common name).

My g-g-grandfather Giovanni Matteri, appearing to be the only son, came to Baltimore in 1861 and, using the name John Mattare, was a "figure maker" and carpenter, kept dairy cows and a horse stable, and was a contractor. I found the house he built in ~1869, still standing today, and was inviting inside by the guy who is renovating it (only the third owner since 1869!). My g-grandfather Joseph Mattare was also a contractor and woodworker, and i the early 1900s handmade 5 violins, two of which I have found and photographed.

I met lots of Matteri's when I was in Garzeno, and I'm sure there remain many Maffia's there too. The names of the longstanding families can be found all around the village, and of course in the cemetery. I took photos of all of the gravestones in the Garzeno cemetery, but have not had time to catalogue them for upload.

Jackie

Hi,not sure if this is any help, but I have just discovered that my Family comes from GARZENO, my family name is MAFFIA.They were Picture frame makers,Silverers & Gilders, barometer makers & watchmakers. I read an article recently were a Maffia family arriving in USA in the 1800s,slightly changed their name, due to the connection to the "Bad" name. Also my 3x greatgrandfather had a brother Angelo Maffia, born in Garzeno, who married a woman whose surname was MATTARA,which is close to your name, I will send you her first name when I check my records,
Best Wishes
Alan Bryan

I am told that my great grandmother was a Scalvini from Bagolino in the Province of Brescia, but I can't find anything about her family anywhere. I read somewhere that the name Scalvini was "the valley of Scalvi", so I have started to search for Scalvi as well. The only thing I know is that her first name was Santina, but she hated the name and went by Santa most of her life. She and her husband, Giovanni (John) Care immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and settled in Flint, MI. They were probably married betwen 1911 and 1913.

Do you know anything about Scalvi and Scalvini being one in the same?
