Searching for birthplace/other information on John Joseph Mattare (Giovanni Matteri?), born January 6, 1836, emigrated to the US in 1861 from the Lake Como area in northern Italy, and died in Baltimore, Maryland on June 8, 1915. In the US, he married Agnes Cecilia Doyle in 1863, and was a woodworker, sawyer, carpenter and turner (in Italy, it was said that his family were woodworkers, possibly makers of violins, and/or may have been candymakers). The Italian version of John Mattare's name is not (yet) officially known, but the first record of the name in the US is recorded in the 1870 Census as “Methery” (phonetic spelling?), but subsequent Catholic church records of childrens/grandchildrens' baptisms and marriages recorded their names (in Latin) as “Matteri,” “Mattari,” and “Metteri” and “Mattare" and John Mattare's birthplace was recorded as "Lombardy, Italy." Some of those names are not found in Italy or are not common, but the name Matteri is found clustered in Lombardy, primarily in the Lario area on the west coast of Lake Como. Considerable numbers of current residents with the name “Matteri” is found in the towns of Dongo, Garzeno, Gravedona and surrounding villages, and in the late 1800's there are records of other Matteri's emigrating to the US, primarily from Garzeno in Lario.
