I do not know if there is a tie, but my grandfater's name was Giovanni John Pasero he came to California in 1902 and was born in Italy on 7/26/1874. He was married to Marina Andries Pasero who was born in South America and became a citizen in 1906. I have noted in researhing that sometimes the name "Pasero" has been documented "Passero". As in the 1910 cencus. In 1920 cencus it was "Pasero". Let me know if there is any relationship. Thanks....

Here is another variation on the name for you. My great, great grandfather, Gennaro Passaro, arrived at Ellis Island at the turn of the century from the Salerno area of Italy. Since that time, the name has always been spelled Passaro, and pronouced "pass-uh-row". But upon careful examination with a magnifying glass of Gennaro's original visa from Italy, his own signature spelled it Passero. All my life, this has been a common mispelling of my surname, and is usually pronounced "pass-air-o". Funny to think that all those people were actually correct after all these years!

Ellen,

Thanks for your reply. My grandmother was the Passero and her family was from Johnston and Old Forge, Pa areas. The majority of them came to Rochester, NY and this is where most of the families live today. The Passero side came from the area of Italy called Compania and on my grandmother's death cert is the town of Celento. I don't know if my uncle who reported the information knew how to spell it. However, it is near Salerno.

Don't know if this helps any. Regards, Tony

Tony,
I imagine that Celento was a small town.......Francisco Passero also was from Celento, Selerno.......We do not know much about his family..I've just sent letters to family members to find out what I can about the Passero side of my family...we may have a connection.

Ellen,

Thanks for the info. I do know that my grandmother's parents are listed as Joseph and Rose. However, I the geneaology tree that my cousins (Passero) sent me, they are listed as Genaro and Gaetana. I don't know if they are the same but I do know that my grandmother was one of their children.

I hope that this information ties into whatever information you get from Celento.

PS I don't recall what area of the country you are in, but the NYC tragedy is so sorrowful. I live in upState NY and have never liked visiting NYC when family lived there, but our hearts go out to everyone there.

Regards, Tony

Hi Tony and Ellen,
My Passaro family are from Ogliastro Marina, Castellabate which is in Salerno, Campania. I was there last November to meet the family. I do know that there were cousins who came to the US that the family has lost touch with. Why don't we compare notes and see if there is a connection. I can also tell you that "Celento" is what they call the area around Castellabate. I had questioned it when I saw a map while in Italy. You can reach me at MBlinn@prodigy.net. Looking forward to hearing from you.
