Looking for information on Luigi Falbo - sorry no dates but
may have died b/n 1897-1901. Family legend says he got shot in the head.

Wife:
(Maria) Theresa Rocca
b. 21 Oct 1862 - Petrona
d. April 1964 - Hibbing, Minnesota, USA
Her parents:
Pietro Giuseppe Rocca b. abt 1838 - Petrona
Maria Talarico b. abt. 1842 - Petrona

Children:
Antonio (Tony)
b. Oct 1887 - Petrona; d. Oct 1938 - Rochester, Minnesota,
USA
Maria/Mary b. abt 1891 - Petrona; d. 1983 - Minnesota, USA
Elisabeth Filomena b. 1897 - Petrona; d. 1984 - Hibbing, Minnesota, USA

Interesting fact:
After Luigi died - Theresa had illegitimate child, Albert b. 1901 - Petrona with Carmen/Carmine Caliguiri. They later married in USA.
Carmen's brother, Joseph, married Theresa's daughter, Mary.

Hi, I think we may have some of the same relatives. It seems you go back further then me. My great grandfather was giusepe citriniti. I believe his father was michele because he named his first born son that name. I did find a michele citriniti that came to us in 1887 but i don't think he stayed. He was connected to the Abate family who are also part of my family. Let me know if this helps you at all or if you have more information that can help me.

Carolina,
My great grandfather Tomasso Iuliano was married to Giuseppa Mascaro and they had two daughters Rose and Maria, there were no sons, and they lived in Serrastretta, Italy. When the girls were small Tomasso left for South America and was never heard from again. Maria, my grandmother, would marry Angelantonio Lucia from Serrastretta and they would emigrate to the United States. This information is from my father who is 103 years old and his brother who is 93 years old.
Many people in small Italian towns had similar names and may or may not be blood related.

Hi, adding info that could help in finding our great uncle Giovanni Mastroianni. When his father Alessandro Mastroianni took him to Pennsylvania he was abt. 15 years old. He got married and had three children Giovanni, Alessandro and Maria not sure of the birth order. There was a rumour that someone in the family is/was in the medical profession possibly a doctor. Also the children may be using the American version of their given names ie John or Alex and their age ranges would possibly be from 65 to 80 years old.
Please email any info to rose.mastro2010@gmail.com.

My grandfather Tommaso Folino Gallo from Falerna, Cantazaro, Italy was friendly with the Perri family also from Falerna. I have run accross the Perri name many times in my research. My grandfather came to the USA in 1897 and settled in Windber, Pa.. He worked in the coal mines. Members of the Perri family witnessed the baptism of two of his children including my father. Both families settled in Mays Landing, NJ and decendents of Perri still live in that town. Also, a Folino Gallo family member married a Cuda in Falerna. I have seen a photo of that wedding.
Ted

Notaro family of Caraffa

I'm looking for ancestry of my great grandmother Sarah Mary DiLorenzo. Her mother was Palma Notaro, who was born in Caraffa, Provincia di Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy around October of 1901. I'm looking to get an exact date of birth on her.

She was the daughter of Domenico "Dominick" Notaro and Concetta "Catherine" Colacino. Domenico was born December 30, 1863 in Caraffa. Concetta may have been born around 1877. I have seen many different birth dates for Concetta. I don't really know which the right one is. I don't know where she was born exactly (I just know "Italy") but if I had to guess I'd say Caraffa as well. I really don't know though.

I'm looking to get a marriage date and location for Domenico and Concetta. I am also looking to get information for Concetta's ancestors. Parents, grandparents -- as far as records indicate.

Palma was born around October 1901, so if she was a legitimate child, Domenico and Concetta would have married as late as early 1901. Domenico had a previous wife, Maria Santo, who he had four children with. The fourth and final child I know of, Tomaso Luigi Notaro, was born on December 04, 1897 in Mesoraca, Provincia di Crotone, Calabria, Italy.

So Maria Santo had to have died after 1897 and then Domenico married Concetta sometime before Palma's conception sometime in early 1901 (assuming they were operating under legitimate child standards and societal rules).

Is there any sort of indexed database of records from Italy? I don't know Italian so researching my Italian ancestry is quite tough.

Domenico was the son of Tomaso Notaro (born abt 1829 in Caraffa and died sometime after 12/29/1888) and Anna Comita (born abt 1837 in Caraffa and died sometime after 12/29/1888). Tomaso was the son of Domenico and named his son Domenico after the grandfather. Domenico Sr. died before the birth of his grandson, Domenico, in 1863. Tomaso's mother was Grazia Scerbo, who died after her grandson Domenico was born in 1863.

Anna Comita's mother was Concetta Squillace. I do not know who her father was. Concetta Squillace's father, Giuseppe Squillace, died in 1811 in Italy of a gunshot wound.

If someone could please help me out with this it would be very appreciated. Thank you.

Josephine Mascaro married Felice Graziano, and they immigrated to Warren, PA. Her husband Felice was born in Serrastretta. She seems to have been born in Rome in 1891, and died in Warren in 1946.
Whether or not this is a connection for you, I do not know.
William Graziano

Hi Ed,

Some of the Serrastretta records are available at:
http://www.catanzaroexchange.com/Serrastretta/

I also have most of the LDS films on permanent loan and would be happy to look up any records you'd like.

I have Serrastretta Nicoteras and Molinaros in my family tree (both through marriage - neither direct line).

The Nicoteras are:

Pietro Gaetano Nicotera (b. 1821) who married Maria Gaetania Mazza (b. 10 Aug 1825). They had a son Antonio Nicotera(b. 30 Sep 1846).

Unfortunately the records are only up to 1860 so tracing newer Serrastretta residents is difficult plus the residents all share only about a dozen surnames so there are lots of Nicoteras, Molinaros, Gigliottis, Fazios, Scalises, Brunis, Aiellos, Marucas, Mascaros, etc.

Hi cousin Cara! Yes--Maria Sacco Arcuri was a younger sister of my great-grandmother Nicoletta Sacco Cardamone and of Maria's grandfather Francesco Sacco! I hadn't heard about your great-grandmother until I did some research, and learned about her and Philip. There are a lot of Saccos and Arcuris in Utica, as you may know. I am from Utica but haven't lived there since I was 18. I'll send you a message off thread with my email--would love to learn more! By the way, was Marie Filomena related to the Clemente Novelty family?
All best,
Jon Meehan

Many a time they came home feeling no pain. Need more info reply some time. My father came to this country aroun 1912 or 13. When my brother and I were in Davoli the young people were amazed that we spoke the old dialect from that peiod of time. wish you luck, Pete Ranieri

Hello, I am stuck trying to discover correct name of my great grandmother (Filomena Cugnetto, b.1885). We know nothing of her family except what I am able to assume. The travel record that most strongly suggests that it is her also has companions with Molinaro, Guzzi, Aiello. Molinaro's lived nearby when she and my great grandfather, Antonio Scalise, b.1884 (Scalese) settled in Hays, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. I know very little of his family also. On that travel record, she names her father as Guarmo (?). It is difficult to read and this is a guess. If these are showing up in your research, please let me know. Thanks.

Re: Andrea Lijoi

hello,

My grand father was called Andrea Lijoi from Sant'Andrea but he married Concetta Lijoi.

I might not be able to help you with your family search, but I can give you some information that I have found on the surname. I am Italian and I have visited Sant'Andrea many times. You might already know some of this, but I wouldn't want to assume.

Andrea Lijoi is a very popular name in Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio. The name Andrea is very popular due to the patron of the village ' Saint Andrea' = Sant'Andrea.

the name of the village is Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio, which means Saint Andrea Apostle of Ionio (if you think of Italy being a shoe, Ionio is the sea in arch of the foot ) The village is split in two due to the fact that it's at the bottom and on top of a hill, so there is a Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio Superiore ( on top of the hill) and a Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio Marina ( by the sea). check pics on Google, it's quite a view!

The origin of the surname is Greek.
The move from Greece to South Italy was due to religious persecutions against the monks of Saint Basilio around the VIII century.
Those monks settled around South Italy, some in Squillace and then in Sant'Andrea.

Greek society was based on the idea of the mother being the head of the family and therefore when you hear older people talk about their parents, they would usually mention their name followed by their mother's name.
For example my grand ma Concetta always used to say that she was Concetta Lijoi from Lorenza, which was her mother.

The surnames at that time identified the family job.

Lijoi comes from the ancient greek word 'Leus' and 'Leoi' singular and plural, meaning 'operai (in Italian)' = ' factory workers '

I hope it helps!

Have you managed to find other info?
I am not quite sure where else to look!
My dad, Salvatore Lijoi, had an old book on the history of Sant'Andrea dello Ionio but it was written in Italian dialect !

Good Luck with your search

Marta Lijoi

Would Falconi be an alternative spelling. There are Falconis in Hamilton, Ohio. Joseph Falconi born in 1871 married a Rose Sprochi, born in 1877. Both born in Italy.
