At this point, the only information I've got on the CHIRICHIGNO surname is that Caterina (b.7/1836), daughter of Rocco (b 1802?), married into my BRANCATI/BRUNCATI line and I've got nothing further than the information that I posted in 2008. Sorry.

But I'll keep your MALPEDE and SMALDONE surnames in mind during my searches.

I am researching these interrelated families in Potenza.

Michele SMALDONE (b. ca. 1822) m. Antonia Maria MALPEDE (b. ca. 1832) in 1852, and had at least three children: Giuseppe (b. 1857), Santa Lucia (b. 1859), and Gerardo (b. 1866). Gerardo went to NYC, married Rosina TOLVE from Potenza; I descend from them. Giuseppe also went to NYC, married Antonia Santangela, but I have no further info on them.

Giuseppe TOLVE (b. ca. 1839) m. Angela BRIENZA (b. ca. 1852) in 1871, and had at least two children: Rosina (b. 1872) and Vincenzo (b. 1877). As noted above, Rosina m. Gerardo Smaldone in NYC.

I would be happy to share information with anyone whose families intersect with these. - Joe

My Mom passed away this morning, before I could get her the information she wanted about her Madre, Erminia Teofilo, born 17 Nov 1887 in Atella, Italy. She was found on the street by 17 year old Mariantonia Caldararo. At some point in her early life, she was taken in and raised by a family named Carlucci, with their two sons Mario and Gabriele. Does any of that sound familiar to anyone, please?

The best location is in the state archives located in Potenza. Most all the records are for male births etc. The reasoning is records for military, but they can be complete-from birth, marriage, immagration, etc. The records are by year. They do not speak english. I may have more info if you would like. I could not find records in Bella and we were there. But we did in Potenza. Hop this is of some value.

I found many records, my gr. gr grandfathers birth records 1853.

Hello all,

I need help trying to get the birth and marriage records for my Great Grandparents, both from Palazzo San Gervasio, Potenza, Italy. I can find on Family Search the following: "Registri dello stato civile di Palazzo San Gervasio (Potenza), 1809-1860". However, my great grandparents were born in 1868 and 1877. Who do I email to try and get these records? Is there another location I can try?

Diana, thanks. I did try to guess what image # Teresa Rago's birth registration was on but after an hour of looking for it, I gave up. I will try to find it later today using the #s you sent.

We are trying to get a car ready for my gson. He is coming up tomorrow and will drive it home. It is an old Honda so we want to make sure it is in A one condition.

ok Bettye, go to Atti Nacita 1870. There are 43 pages, and about 107 Reg #'s. So, Teresa's record is on page 23 and finishes on page 24. The handwriting is pretty bad, but the date looks like the 4th of Aug.

Let me know how it works. When I first started using this resource, I had to go through some records 3 or 4 times before I got the hang of it.

Hint: Once you have the reg. no., go to the last page in the Atti record to see how many there are. Then you will have a better idea how many pages to go back.

Diana, I am ignorant in doing Italian research. Hate to make a pest of myself but I need your guidance.

On the birth records for Trivigno, Potenza, Basilicata I found one of the children of Michiel Rago and Carmela Maggio
listed in the index. I tried for an hour to find it on the actual birth records but I do not find the register numbers for the birth. Here is the info:

1870 Teresa Basilla Rago Register # 56. (supposedly she was born in the month of Aug per family records).
Would you please tell me how to find this entry?

Thanks. I have garnered more info from my friend who is the descendant. Michiel Rago and Carmela Maggio married in 1864 in Trivigno. They had at least 2 children born there btw 1865 and 1869.( a son and Teresa Bacilia Rago) Then they removed to Naples where they had a son Joseph James Rago b 2 Nov 1878. The remainder of their children were born in Chicago, IL. Something about the birth dates Jan has given me for the children bother me. On the entry for the ship in 1880 they had a son (cannot read name)age 11, Teresa age 8, and son Giuseppe age 6. So I am going to pursue birth data.

Hi, turned out to be the wrong Michiel Rago. The couple on that marriage record also removed to Chicago, Cook Co IL.

Now I am going to try for birth records of the 3 children that Michiel and Carmela had before they left Italy.

"Potenza, Basilicata, Italy, Civil Registration Records" is a search engine on Ancestry. Under "Search", select all records, then follow it through to Italy, Basilicata, Potenza, Trivigno. Choose the "Annual" records first, get the "Atti" number, then go into the Atti files.

Diana, thank you for the response and information. I must admit that what you posted is some what confusing to me. You tell me to 'look for myself' but not where I can do that. You told me you found a marriage record for Michelangelo Rago in 1879 but not the name of the wife or a full date. I do know that the wife I am seeking was Carmela M Maggio born 5 May 1846 in Trivigno.

Search in Potenza, Basilicata, Italy, Civil Registration Records 1861-1938. I found a Michelangelo Rago married in 1879 in Trivigno. Bear in mind that Maggio is May in Italian. The name may have been Maggio, however, the date of this marriage was in Maggio (May). Look for yourself to see if anything else fits your family history.

Also, look again carefully at the ship's passenger list. Have found different things when I looked at different times for info on my Grandparents. Good luck.

Michiel Rago stated he was b 17 Dec 1838 in Trivigno, Basilicata, Italy on a passport application in 1898. He had brought his family to the USA on the SS Caledonia in May 1880. They settled in Chicago, Cook Co, IL where they lived out their lives.

Michiel Rago had married Carmelo May Maggio in Trivino about 1877. I am seeking their marriage record, plus the names of their parents.

Caldararo, Carlucci in Atella

Recently got my grandmom's birth record from 1887 in Atella. She was given the name Erminia Teofilo. A girl (17) named Mariantonia Caldararo found her and asked to raise her. She was ultimately raised by a family named Carlucci, who had at least 2 sons named Mario and Gabriele.
In 1907, she married Giovanni Perillo from Melfi. They moved to America in 1916 with their first 4 children. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

I found the birth record for my great-great grandmother who was born in Vietra di Potenza on July 11, 1828. I have three separate images of the fathers first name. I'd guess his name is "Giuseppe" Pitta but very difficult to tell. Would like to get a 2nd opinion from someone more skilled in Italian handwriting and first names. Thanks!

Other information I've interpreted are: Mothers name is Maddalena Friciello, age 29 fathers name is ?Giuseppe? Pitta age 28, profession contadino (farmer).

You can write to commune de Melfi, although I had to actually go there to get the info I was looking for. I got family info on my grandfather, Giovanni Perillo. It helps if you speak Italian.

I did all of the following:
indice annuale nascite,morti,matrimoni and Indice annule di pubblicazone di matrimoni...Did I miss anything???Or is there another catogoery i should be looking into??

Amidio was born around 1859 in Sasso di Castalda, Potenza, Italy. His parents were Eliseo Cappozzoli and Serefina Venuto. He came to New York around the mid 1880's and married my great grandmother, Vincenza bonito in 1887.

HI, I am looking for information on the family of Rosina (Rosa, Rose) Infernusi. Her birthplace is Potenza or Grottela. She was born 6 June 1878. She arrived in the US (NYC) in 1906 or 1907. She married Eduardo Mollo. They lived on Allen Street in Manhattan, and then on Van Nest Avenue in the Bronx, NY. They had 3 children: Mollie (Emilia), Aida (Edith) and Eugene.

Alvino Family in Bella, Potenza, Italy & New York

I'm looking for information on the Alvino family in the Potenza region in Italy. Bella, Potenza has come up in most recent findings. Family stories mention an Italian island the family lived or relatives of the family lived. -I don't remember the name. Campania seems to be very popular as well online for Alvino, but I have found no connects yet.. so not rulling anything out.

The information I have is as follows:

My great great grandfather Dominick Alvino was born in Bella, Potenza, Italy. Dates for him unknown. His wife Angelina (maiden name unknown) was born in Italy as well but where abouts and dates I don't know.

They had a son named Michael Alvino born in Italy 1877. Died 4th July 1919 in Hasbrouck Heights, Bergen, New Jersey, US. Michael's wife was named Filomena Fuccella (Philomena Fucella) born in Italy 15 March 1878, some information says 1880. She immigranted to New York in 1910. Died 7th Jan 1970 in Yonkers, Westchester, New York. Filomena was not a naturalized citizen until 1945 if I remember correctly.. I need to pull out the information.

They had two children (that I know of) in Italy; Dominick Alvino (b. 1898) whose middle name is possibly Camine and Lena Alvino (b. 1908). -Both immigranted to US. In the US, Filomena and Michael had six more children; four girls and two twin boys between 1910-1917; Mary (b. 1910 d. 2004), Lucy (b. 1911), Rachael (b. 1913), Vitina (b. 1916), Peter and Anthony (b. 1917). A nephew named James Haroni or Faroni? (b. abt 1892) in Italy and immigranted in 1904 lived with them in New York. -What side of the family he is related to I don't know. Is it normal for a ten-ish year old to immigrant on his own back then? I have not found passenger lists for him yet.

Michael died when the twins were 2years old and Dominick (b. 1898) was the bread winner. -Records were hard to read but occupation stated he was either a 'Chief Banking' or 'Chef Baking' working all 52 weeks in 1940. Census reports say they lived in the Washington Heights area in New York in 1940 near what is now a Puerto Rican restaurant called La Potencia. Dominick was also listed as a naturalized citizen and widowed in 1940 but his wife's name is unknown. Mary went on to have a family but I don't know any other information about them at this time. The twins were muscians. Anthony went into the military at one point and was a music teacher.

I would love to know anything about anyone listed above. Would really appreciate it.

His name was Antonio and he had a brother named Gerardo (they owned a restaurant in CT together). Does the name Petrino seem familiar to you from Bella? Is there any way I can find someone to help me find his parents?

I'm doing research on my Brindisi roots and discovered my ggrandfather, Nicola Brindisi arrived in 1890, lived in Denver for some years and then moved to Chicago. I believe that he had family in Denver. Listed on the Denver City Directory of 1898, he is there with his son John (Giovanni), (address 3424 Palmer) as well as Emedio Brindisi (W 33rd Ave)and a Rome & Charles Brindisi (2410 19th).
