Laing / Roberts in Gibraltar

Laing / Roberts in Gibraltar

I'm researching my Dads family and I've come up against a brick wall.

My Grandad Sydney Henry Roberts was born in Gibraltar, his birth record was in the GRO armies birth records. (I also since have found his sisters Alice Cat Roberts birth record). I have Sydneys birth certificate and his Mother is down as Ernestina Roberts formerly Laing, a native of Gibraltar.

We want to find out more about Ernestina and seem to have come to a dead end.

We have her marriage certificate from 1912 and her Father is listed as John Laing (soldier, deceased) she is down as being 23 years old which would make her birth date 1889.

I have her death certificate and it has her age down as 69 when she dies in 1966, this would put her birth year as 1898. If this is the true date, that would have made her only 14 when she was married.

I have looked through GRO overseas birth records, UK birth records and on the Gibraltar government website but I can't find any information on her or her Father John Laing.

Is there any other way I could try to find more info on either her or her Father?

Thanks

Although it's unlikely she was married at 14.

Carolinedeburgh, who was the informant on the death cert? It's very possible that the information given was not accurate. Even when the informant is a close relative, the person doesn't always have the correct details or can inadvertently give inaccurate information if upset by the death. I think the marriage certificate is likely to be more accurate.

Thanks for your help, My head is sore from keep hitting brick walls!! I will contact the Archivist in Gibraltar and see what they can find.

My current thinking is that Ernestina may have been illegitimate and her birth may not have been recorded.

The only John Laing's I have found were both registered in Gib census data and stationed at Buena Vista barracks in 1871, one was 20 and the other was 23 at the time. These dates would have made them in their 40's around her suggested birth dates

The informant was her son, he was quite close to her. I think he only went on what he knew about his Mother.

He remembers living in Gib as a young boy and took his own son there to show him where he grew up.
