Hello,
I'm doing a research of my Benaim family from Tetuan, Morocco, and looking for details of BENAIM DAVID,b.21/08/1894, Tetuan Morocco, d. 03/1968, Gibraltar.
i think he was the son of RABBI R.H.M (Rafael, Haim, Moshe) Benaim and Massuda daughter of R. Moshe Naim/Benaim..? (one of them d.08/04/1920, Gibraltar?).
can someone help me with some details of this family: parents, brothers, sisters, dates...?
thank you, David

Dear David
You are quite right, David Benaim was the son of the Rev Moses Benaim (b. Tetuan ca 1844, d. Gibraltar 27.7.1920. Moses' wife Mesoda died 8.4.1920. hey had 3 children, David, Shalom and Hasiba. There are many descendants of David and Shalom in Gibraltar and elsewhere. David and his son Moses were Israeli consuls in Gibraltar, as his grandson David is at present. Details of the family can be found in Abecassis: Genealogica Hebraica Vol I (ISBN 972-95429-0-2) - I think there is a copy in Beit HaTefutsot in Tel Aviv.
Good luck in your research
Sam Benady

No, only that her name was Mesoda (=Massouda) and she died in 1920. However, according to Abecassis, in 1860 Rabbi R H Moses emigrated to Tiberias and became a Dayan there, and only returned to Morocco in 1880, so he probably married in Israel. The Benaim family were closely intermarried with another rabbinical family from Tetuan, the Bibas family, so there may be a clue there (his sons David and Shalom married sisters Esther and Mesoda Bibas, who I believe were also their first cousins).
I attach a photocopy I have with his photo and some biography, which says the family emigrated to Haifa when he was 6 months old.

Sam

Hello again Sam,
i looked at the Genealogica Hebraica of Abecassis and i foud a mistake, he's refer rev RHM"N as a son of Moses Benaim, and that he had two more brothers: Shalom and Jacob. from what i read, RHM"N's father was Yeshaya and was his only son, do you know where to ask or how to correct it?
thanks,
Benaim David

Yes, Abecassis is often inaccurate (but still useful!).
The Haham Benaim was known in Gibraltar as Rabbi Moshe Benaim, so his father could not have been called Moses (unless he died before his son was born).
None of his sons were called Yeshaya - I always assumed that his father was David, as this was the name of his elder son (although Abecassis has a son called Moses first (with no dates))! I think Abecassis was confused and thought that there must have been a Bechor called Moses because he thought that the Haham's father was Moses..
I know of no plans for a 2nd edition of the books, so I don't know how this can be "corrected". If I see one of the family I can ask them.

Sam

Thank you for your help,
In the book "hachmay hamizrah" it sais that his parants was Yeshaya benaim from Shishou (near Tetouan) Morocco and his mother was Mesuda.
from what i read he had a son called Yeshaya, but he died at the age of 18. and i couldn't find who are Yeshaya's brothers.
also i know that his wife's father, Mesuda, was r' Moshe Benaim from Tetuan, here also i don't know who are his brothers.

thanks again,
David

I am looking for the connection between Jacob Buarque from Gilbraltar to Marcus Benaim, they both came to the United States from Marroco as hebrews. Buarque is a surname that appeared in Brazil in the 1800's. Mary Macin Buarque was a mother in law to Marcus Benaim.
