Francis Victor Roustan (aka John Eugene O'Dew)

Francis Victor Roustan (aka John Eugene O'Dew)

Classification: Query
Surnames: Roustan, Rouston, Andreau, O'Dew, Migus, Burel
I am curious about this fellow. He and his family apparently had their origins on Saint Pierre et Miquelon. He served in WWI as John Eugene O'Dew http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/searches/soldierDetai... .

When he enlisted in 1915, he claimed:

Place of Birth: Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Next of Kin: Victor O'Dew, father, Vulcan Avenue, Sydney, Nova Scotia
Date of Birth: January 20, 1897
(there is a note scribbled on his attestation paper, stating that his correct name was Francis Victor Roustan)

But he appears to have enlisted a second time in 1919, then claiming:

Name: John Eugene O'Dew
Place of Birth: Miqulion
Next of Kin: Rene Burel, uncle, Box 414, Sidney, N.S.
Date of Birth: February 28, 1897

In 1925 (as Francis Victor Roustan) he married Marie Migus in Montreal. (The church record is difficult to read, but I think indicates his parents as Joseph Roustan and Marie Roustan of Saint Pierre et Miquelon). About a year later he had a daughter, Frances Ellen Roustan, who died in 1936 (buried in Montreal).

I haven't been able to locate his father (Victor O'Dew as claimed in 1915) or parents (Joseph Roustan and Marie Roustan as claimed when married).

I have located his uncle "René Burel", whose wife was Léontine Claire Roustan (born 10 February 1884 in St Pierre, St Pierre & Miquelon, Dom-Tom, France; married 1903 in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, died 20 Mar 1947 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts).

Family trees and census records for Léontine's family, don't indicate a brother Joseph (or any other brother who could have been Francis Victor Roustan's father).

I am leaning a little to another theory, that Francis Victor Roustan was an illegitimate child of Léontine's sister, Marie Joseph Aimée Rouston. In 1904, Marie Joseph Aimée Rouston married Victor Andreau; thus, Victor Andreau might correspond to Francis' father "Victor O'Dew" as indicated in the 1915 document.

I have also stumbled across documents referring to a John Eugene O'Dea who enlisted in 1914 as a part of the Newfoundland infantry.

It would be interesting to pull more details of this puzzle together. I welcome any input.

Thanks! The information at http://www.petit-colombier.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=434&...;... confirms Marie Joseph Aimée Rouston as his mother. Although Victor Andreau is not necessarily F.V. Roustan's biological father, he would at least have been a step-father.

Thanks! I just stumbled across his military record and became intrigued by his case. I suppose I was intrigued as to why he didn't enlist using his correct name – so I tried to dig a little deeper. I haven't resolved that mystery, but I have a little more insight into his life.

I found the Andreau/Roustan marriage details with a search at https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
