Census Records In Marseilles France

Hello, I was wondering if Census Records are available for Marseilles France are available. I was looking for information about the following years 1882-1889 under the last name of Manfredonia or Valerio. Serofino Manfredonia and Giuseppia (Josephine) Valerio.

I just found out that her brother came over around the same time. Sabino Valerio and Laura Cantelino. They had four children there from 1884-1890.

I was wondering if they stayed in the same home and that's why there's no information under the Manfredonia name.

Thanks so much.

Hello again!

I found three of the children of Sabin Valerio (born in Atripalda, Avellino, Campania) and Louise (not Laura) Candelmo (not Cantelino). I tried finding them in the 1881, 1886 and 1891 censuses using the addresses from the birth records but no luck. I ran into the same problem as I did back when I tried to find the Manfredonias in the censuses. I could find the streets but the sections with their addresses weren't included.

Here is a link to the censuses:

http://www.archives13.fr/archives13/CG13/cache/bypass/pid/49...

There's small type in red that says:

Lien vers le site externe 'Accéder aux documents des listes nominatives du recensement

Click on that and it will open the search. The censuses are not searchable by name, only by address or area, so it takes a lot of patience.

I'm attaching the three birth records. They are:

1. Angeline Josephine Valerio born 17 March 1884. Sabin and Louise were both 22. They lived at 213 Grand Chemin d'Aix. The Manfredonias were living at 217 Grand Chemin d'Aix on the records I found for them. So basically next door.

2. Seraphim Bastiste Valerio born 14 March 1887. His parents were 26. They lived at 8 Traverse du Moulin à Vent.

3. Albert Antoine Valerio born 6 February 1889. His parents were 29. They lived at 61 rue Vallon Montebello.

Hope that's some help.

Cheers,

Soosi

Hi Diane,

Here's the birth record for Henri Sabin Pascal Valerio born 5 May 1887 to Pascal Valerio, age 28, from Atripalda, and Marie Sabine Pappacena, age 24. They lived at 7 rue Sainte Therése.

I looked before for the military records for Pellegrino Manfredonia but didn't find any. I also looked at all military records for anyone with the last name Manfredonia and found none. France had a type of draft where all men born in France or naturalized a citizen of France, had to register when they turned 20. The records are called the Registre Matricules and the year they had to register was called their class year.

This time I looked for Valerio and found two, Sabin and son Seraphim, which I'm attaching. They aren't the best copies and are somewhat hard to read. The Department of Bouches-du-Rhone did not do very high quality digitizing of their documents.

According to his form, Sabin Valerio was born in Atripalda on 24 April 1861 (so his Registre Matricule Class year was 1881) to Nicolas Valerio and Marie Salvey. He was naturalized a French citizen in 1897. The family obviously stayed on in Marseille after the Manfredonias left for the US.

The class year for Seraphim Baptistes Valerio was 1907 (born 14 March 1887). He died in Marseille on 21 April 1919.

Both of them had the same address on their forms: 4 rue Christophe Colomb. I looked up that address in the censuses and found them in the 1901 and 1906, which I'm attaching.

1901:
Valerio, Sabin, age 39, nationality French, head of household
Louise, age 38, wife
Angèle, age 16, daughter
Seraphim, age 13, son
They are all listed as day labourers for various employers.

1906:
Vallerio, Sabino, born 1861 Atripalda, head of household, day labourer
Louise, born 1861 Atripalda, wife, homemaker
Avesne, Angèle, born 1884 Marseille, daughter, without profession
Armand, born 1879 Marseille, son-in-law, day labourer
François, born 1904 Marseille, grandson, without profession

I'll look around some more and see if I can find anything else, especially on the elusive Pellegrino Manfredonia.

Best,

Soosi

I have a sister and niece just outside of Boston. Bit far from New Jersey for dinner - lol. If you ever come to Victoria (highly recommended) I'll give you the royal tour. They don't call it Beautiful British Columbia for nothing.
