I've just found your 4 years old post, regarding the surname "SPITT".
Elaida SPITT (alias Eraita a Virihoa PITI) is my 3 x great-grand-mother.
In the family, we have always thought that he was an AMERICAN whaler.
I will be interested to have any information you can collect about her father.
